Join us to hear Maria Ure, founder and director of Spanish in Action, for a Story Time in Spanish. Her approach is radically different from teaching methods commonly seen in school settings, as she personally sits down with the kids and delivers her lessons through song. It’s her innate gift for teaching and ability to create beautiful songs for each lesson that set her apart as a teacher and as a school.

Join California Poets in the Schools, teachers, Juan Cardenas and Jessica Wilson on a journey through narrative poetry. Write in your own voice and learn new ways to express yourself.

This 6 series workshop will include food, so get ready for some delicious learning, and connection building through creative writing.

Remember the smell of sizzling carne asada, the taste of calabasas con queso, the first time you made arroz, or papas.
Our senses deliver us into memory, and our memories will fuel our poems and our palates.

Join us for a Moon Tide Press Reading by three authors:

Alexis Rhone Fancher, is the author of: How I Lost My Virginity to Michael Cohen, State of Grace: The Joshua Elegies, Enter Here and Junkie Wife. Her photographs are published worldwide, and she is a multiple Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee. She is also poetry editor of Cultural Weekly.

Ron Koertge taught English and Creative Writing at Pasadena City College for 37 years. He has published more than 25 books of poetry and fiction, most recently: Vampire Planet, Yellow Moving Van, and Coaltown Jesus. He is also 2018 Poet Laureate of South Pasadena, California.

Lee Rossi is the author of four books of poetry: Darwin’s Garden, Wheelchair Samurai, Ghost Diary, and Beyond Rescue.

Join us for Readings and Reflections: An Evening with Joyce Carol Oates, when the award-winning writer, essayist, poet, and novelist will read from her works, including Hazards of Time Travel (2018), and share personal reflections.

Joyce Carol Oates is a writer of more than 40 novels, a number of plays and novellas, and many volumes of short stories, poetry and nonfiction. She won the National Book Award for her novel them (1969), and two novels and two short story collections were each finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. She has taught at Princeton University since 1978 and is currently Professor Emerita in the Program in Creative Writing.

PictureEboo Patel: Author of the 2018 LMU Common Book at LMU

Join LMU students, faculty and staff as we welcome author, educator, and interfaith leader Eboo Patel to talk about his book Sacred Ground: Pluralism, Prejudice, and the Promise of America. This event is free and open to everyone in the LMU community.

Eboo Patel is a leading voice in the movement for interfaith cooperation and the Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), a national nonprofit working to make interfaith cooperation a social norm. He is the author of: Acts of Faith, Sacred Ground, Interfaith Leadership, and Out of Many Faiths. Eboo served on President Obama’s Inaugural Faith Council and is an expert on the topic of religious pluralism. For over fifteen years he has worked on and with many organizations to help realize a future where religion is a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division.

Join us for Writer-in-Residence Wally Rudolph’s first of three public conversations at the Annenberg Community Beach House. In Creating Art in Times of Strife, Rudolph presents a series of one-on-one conversations with socially conscious artist across disciplines, informing how current political polarization and environmental crisis affect and inform each artist’s process and practice.

Christine Yoo’s forthcoming documentary, 26.2 to Life, chronicles a year in the life of San Quentin’s 1000 Mile Club, a prison running group training for an annual marathon inside the prison’s crowded lower yard: 105 laps to complete 26.2 miles. Wally and Christine discuss how the making of the film has affected her view of the prison industrial complex and the human cost of our justice system
