New L.A. Book Festival LitLit Announces Talks by Poets Yesika Salgado, Vickie Vertiz and More

EWGQUR43BFGK3ENGYAP6QJ37U4The Los Angeles Review of Books and Hauser & Wirth Publishers announced the panelists who will discuss literature, art and activism at LitLit, the Little Literary Fair, which will debut this weekend in L.A.’s Downtown Arts District. The city’s newest book festival, to be held at the Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles arts complex, will host four panels on July 20 and 21 as part of its programming, which will also include more than 20 exhibitors from L.A. and other cities on the West Coast.

Please join us as Your Author Series welcomes children’s author and illustrator Tao Nyeu, as part of our Summer Author Program and Summer Reading challenge. The author will be reading her book, Squid and Octopus: Friends for Always, which shows us a glimpse into the life of two funny friends. She specializes in silk screens and water-based inks, giving her illustrations a distinctive style. Her work has won many awards, and has been influenced by Shel Silverstein, Richard Scarry, and Beatrix Potter.

Library Foundation of Los Angeles’ ALOUD Series Update

downloadI received this email last week from the Library Foundation. It’s about the revamped ALOUD Reading Series. I know everybody in the Los Angeles literary community was upset last fall when the Library Foundation abruptly announced sudden changes to its staff–the firings of ALOUD Director Louise Steinman and Associate Director Maureen Moore–and to its central program, ALOUD, a program no one thought needed any retooling. However, major retooling has befallen ALOUD, and according to this email, very little, if any, literary programming is actually featured in any of its announced programming.

BookNew Book Club: Spiritual Classics with Nick Shindo Street at the Last Bookstore

At some point, everyone has to wrestle with personal belief and one’s orientation to the universe. Whether addressing origins or destiny, what lies inside or what’s “out there”—it’s a good bet that those who’ve come before have something to offer. In this club we dive into the best wisdom we can find, guided by author and journalist Nick Shindo Street. Nick is the senior writer at the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture, and his biggest turn-ons are wonder, awe, and curiosity.

The choice for our first Book Club selection is The Undiscovered Self, by Carl Jung, and we will take stock of the individual in church and state.
