YA Book Club: Best of All Worlds at pages: a bookstore – In-Person Event
Our YA Book Club is a new book club for high schoolers reading young adult fiction. Facilitated by Sienna and Octavia.
This month’s election for discussion is Best of All Worlds by Kenneth Oppel.
Xavier Oaks doesn’t particularly want to go to the cabin with his dad and his dad’s pregnant new wife, Nia. But family obligations are family obligations, and it’s only for a short time. So, he leaves his mom, his brother, and his other friends behind for a week in the woods. Only…one morning he wakes up and the house isn’t where it was before. It’s like it’s been lifted and placed…somewhere else.
When Xavier, his dad, and Nia go explore, they find they are inside a dome, trapped. And there’s no one else around.
Until, three years later, another family arrives.
Is there any escape? Is there a reason they are stuck where they are? Different people have different answers—and those different answers inexorably lead to tension, strife, and sacrifice.
In this masterpiece, award-winning author Kenneth Oppel builds to a heart-stopping pitch by drawing a story that feels very much of our moment, where our very human choices collectively lead to humanity’s eventual fate.
Kenneth Oppel is the bestselling author of Skybreaker and Airborn, a Printz Honor Book. He lives in Toronto with his family and can be found online at http://www.kennethoppel.ca.

Alison Kinney, with Sarah Mesle, & United States of Rejection: A Story of Love, Hate, and Hope at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Alison Kinney, in conversation with Sarah Mesle, will discuss United States of Rejection: A Story of Love, Hate, and Hope.
This book is a love-hate story about personal and political relationships in the United States, told through the intimate stories of both the rejectors and the rejected: lovers, families, neighbors, and a nation and its people. Although we’re taught not to care about others’ opinions, rejection always hurts, and it hurts some people a lot more than others. To prove it, this book marshals contemporary neuroscience, the Founding Fathers’ rejection advice, and four centuries of personal narratives, many of them hilarious, many more heartbreaking. These rejection and acceptance stories span loving and disastrous American first encounters, soldiers and dancers rejected on front lines and chorus lines, playground bullies invoked before the Senate, and generations of lovers and patriots battling or swiping right to defend their loved ones and their country.
Alison Kinney is assistant professor of writing (nonfiction) at Eugene Lang College, The New School. She is the author of the books Hood and Avidly Reads Opera. Her writing on culture, history, science, and social justice has appeared in many publications, online or in print, including The New Yorker, The Paris Review Daily, Lapham’s Quarterly, The New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s, and Gay Magazine. She lives and writes in Brooklyn, New York.

When Ingrid has written her final letter she disappears from a Dorset beach, leaving behind her beautiful but dilapidated house by the sea, her husband, and her two daughters, Flora and Nan.
Twelve years later, Gil thinks he sees Ingrid from a bookshop window, but he’s getting older and this unlikely sighting is chalked up to senility. Flora, who has never believed her mother drowned, returns home to care for her father and to try to finally discover what happened to Ingrid. But what Flora doesn’t realize is that the answers to her questions are hidden in the books that surround her.

Feminist Book Club: Heart Lamp at Cellar Door Bookstore, Riverside – In-Person Event
Join us to discuss Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq.
Winner of the 2025 International Booker Prize
Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Gregg Barios Book in Translation Prize
A monumental first collection in English from Banu Mushtaq: lawyer, activist, champion of Muslim women, and winner of India’s highest literary honors.
In the twelve stories of Heart Lamp, Banu Mushtaq exquisitely captures the everyday lives of women and girls in Muslim communities in southern India. Published originally in the Kannada language between 1990 and 2023, praised for their dry and gentle humor, these portraits of family and community tensions testify to Mushtaq’s years as a journalist and lawyer, in which she tirelessly championed women’s rights and protested all forms of caste and religious oppression.
Written in a style at once witty, vivid, colloquial, moving and excoriating, it’s in her characters—the sparky children, the audacious grandmothers, the buffoonish maulvis and thug brothers, the oft-hapless husbands, and the mothers above all, surviving their feelings at great cost—that Mushtaq emerges as an astonishing writer and observer of human nature, building disconcerting emotional heights out of a rich spoken style. Her opus has garnered both censure from conservative quarters as well India’s most prestigious literary awards; this is a collection sure to be read for years to come.
Banu Mushtaq is a writer, activist. and lawyer in the state of Karnataka, southern India. Mushtaq began writing within the progressive protest literary circles in southwestern India in the 1970s and 1980s: critical of the caste and class system, the Bandaya Sahitya movement gave rise to influential Dalit and Muslim writers, of whom Mushtaq was one of the few women. She is the author of six short story collections, a novel, an essay collection and a poetry collection. She writes in Kannada and has won major awards for her literary works, including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy and the Daana Chintamani Attimabbe awards. Previously translated into Urdu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, the first book-length translation of her work into English is Heart Lamp: Selected Stories, which has been shortlisted for the 2025 International Booker Prize. ‘Red Lungi’, a story from Heart Lamp, has been published in the Paris Review. Deepa Bhasthi is a writer and literary translator based in Kodagu, southern India. She translates from Kannada and also publishes essays and cultural criticism.

Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez, with R.K. Russell, & Conversion Therapy Dropout: A Queer Story of Faith and Belonging at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez, in conversation with R.K. Russell, will discuss his memoir Conversion Therapy Dropout: A Queer Story of Faith and Belonging.
A gay Christian’s behind-the-scenes account of evangelical megachurches and eight years in conversion therapy before finding wholeness and authenticity.
Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez was an invisible architect behind evangelical Christianity’s digital empire, crafting messages of belonging for some of the most influential megachurches—Hillsong Church, Elevation Church, Willow Creek—all while secretly questioning his own place within the faith.
In a desperate attempt to “fix” himself, he turned to conversion therapy, spending eight years trying to pray the gay away. And he wasn’t alone. More than 700,000 people in the US have undergone some form of conversion therapy. Even though Exodus International, the largest ex-gay organization, closed in 2013, the practice still thrives in many conservative religious communities. After years of this harmful “therapy,” Schraeder Rodriguez’s sexuality never changed. But his faith did. The more time he spent in evangelical Christianity, the more he witnessed the hypocrisy of institutions that claimed to love everyone while quietly pushing people like him into silence. But Schraeder Rodriguez wouldn’t remain silent. Instead, he forged a new path, discovering a vibrant faith beyond the constraints of non-affirming theology and finding a community that embraced his whole self.
Conversion Therapy Dropout is a behind-the-scenes look at megachurch culture, the hidden harm of non-affirming Christian spaces, and the ongoing impact of conversion therapy on gay Christians. This isn’t just a coming-out story—it’s about what happens after. About rebuilding a life outside the only world you’ve ever known. And the radical act of stepping into the light after being told your whole life to stay in the shadows. Sometimes, the greatest act of faith isn’t holding on—it’s letting go.
Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez spent almost a decade in gay conversion therapy—all while working behind the scenes at some of the most influential Evangelical Christian megachurches. After embracing his identity as a gay Christian and stepping away from church work, he co-founded Church Clarity, an organization that helps queer people find affirming faith communities. His story and work have been featured by TIME, The Advocate, NBC, VICE, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Religion News Service, and Newsweek. Born in the Midwest, he now calls New York City home, where he continues his work as a writer, digital strategist, and advocate for queer people of faith.

Join us for a celebratory book launch for Erica Hendry’s debut novel, Let’s Not Go Overboard Here. Filmmaker and author Lovell Holder will be joining Hendry.
Let’s Not Go Overboard Here is as twisty as it is hilarious. In it we find Mel, a pop culture obsessive who uses her reality TV expertise to investigate a suspicious disappearance aboard a yacht. The Below Deck fantasy she’d dreamed of being is anything but; as she uncovers cracks in the other passengers’ alibis, Mel’s desperation threatens to crack her own sanity first. Boat? Check. Suspected murder? Check. Hilarious pop-culture references for the reality TV-obsessed? CHECK.

At Skylight: Samantha Allen, with Ilana Masad, & PUCK at Skylight – In-Person Event
Samantha Allen, in conversation with Ilana Masad, will discuss PUCK, a Midsummer Night’s Dream-inspired romcom.
Puck is a reality show producer and agent of chaos with a talent for bringing people together, and tearing them apart.
Meet Puck: the nonbinary, thirty-year-old mastermind behind Homewreckers, a dating show that puts troubled couples through hell—with a little help from their exes. Used to being the one pulling the strings, it shocks Puck when their life undergoes a plot twist of its own and their college roommate Mia announces her engagement to her ex’s best friend, Damon. Having only recently broken up with longtime-boyfriend Zander, and never having had much in common with Damon (who lovesick Lena has always pined after), Mia’s news leaves her friend group reeling—and Puck’s mind whirling.
When they arrive for a week of wedding festivities at an upscale resort in the Appalachian forest, Puck immediately sees that Mia’s marriage will lead to misery, and takes it upon themself to save their friends by rearranging the couples—without anyone finding out. But as Puck comes up against a type-A maid of honor hell-bent on making this wedding happen, it becomes clear that they will have to deliver the greatest stunt of their career. If only they can take their eyes off the bridesmaid. After all, the course of true love never did run smooth…
Written with Samantha Allen’s signature charm, wit, and an irresistible dose of Shakespearian mischief, Puck is the ultimate romcom for our chaotic era, and a celebration of the friendships that carry us through it all.
Samantha Allen is the author of the Lambda Literary Award finalist Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States and a GLAAD Award-winning journalist. Her writing has been published by the New York Times, Rolling Stone, CNN.com, and more.

Jennifer Keishin Armstrong & Parks and Rec at Vroman’s
Jennifer Keishin Armstrong will present and discuss Parks and Rec: The Underdog TV Show That Lit’Rally Inspired a Vision for a Better America.
From the New York Times bestselling author of Seinfeldia, the definitive story of the creation and legacy of Parks and Recreation, with exclusive interview content from its cast, crew, and creators, as well as an introduction by Nick Offerman.
More than fifteen years after Parks and Recreation premiered, it has become a streaming and pop culture staple. It’s beloved for its jokes, characters, and expressions—the show even created a now widely observed holiday, Galentine’s Day. How did it all happen and how did the show transform from a ratings disappointment into a cult classic? Pop culture historian Jennifer Keishin Armstrong reveals all this and more in the definitive history of the show, which is as full of humor, optimism, and heart as Parks and Recreation itself.
Through new and exclusive interviews, as well as deep insight and smart and entertaining pop culture analysis, Armstrong tells the story of how Parks and Recreation came to be: how it grew from The Office’s success and Obama-inspired optimism, how producers assembled one of TV’s most lovable casts but barely survived a mediocre first season, how the show found its voice by getting more political and more romantic, and how it became a cultural force despite middling ratings during its network run, going on to become a television savior of the Trump era and a modern classic.
Lovingly told and deeply researched, Parks and Rec is the ultimate history of the show that taught us what’s important in life: friends, waffles, and work.

This month we discuss Oscar Wilde’s classic about outward respectability and inward corruption, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Fascinated by his own beautiful portrait, Dorian Gray makes a Faustian pact to exchange his soul for perpetual youth and beauty. Guided by Lord Henry Wotton, he embarks on a life of corruption, satisfying his desires while still appearing as a respectable gentleman to society. Only Dorian’s portrait shows the signs of his moral decline.

History Book Club: Hero of Two Worlds via Cellar Door Bookstore, Riverside – Online via Zoom Event
Join us when we discuss online Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution by Mike Duncan.
Few in history can match the revolutionary career of the Marquis de Lafayette. Over fifty incredible years at the heart of the Age of Revolution, he fought courageously on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a soldier, statesman, idealist, philanthropist, and abolitionist.
As a teenager, Lafayette ran away from France to join the American Revolution. Returning home a national hero, he helped launch the French Revolution, eventually spending five years locked in dungeon prisons. After his release, Lafayette sparred with Napoleon, joined an underground conspiracy to overthrow King Louis XVIII, and became an international symbol of liberty. Finally, as a revered elder statesman, he was instrumental in the overthrow of the Bourbon Dynasty in the Revolution of 1830.
From enthusiastic youth to world-weary old age, from the pinnacle of glory to the depths of despair, Lafayette never stopped fighting for the rights of all mankind. His remarkable life is the story of where we come from, and an inspiration to defend the ideals he held dear.
Mike Duncan is one of the most popular history podcasters in the world and author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic. His award-winning series, The History of Rome, remains a legendary landmark in the history of podcasting. Duncan’s ongoing series, Revolutions, explores the great political revolutions that have driven the course of modern history.

Janice Kaplan, with Robert Masello, & What Your Body Knows About Happiness at Diesel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event
Join us to welcome Janice Kaplan, in conversation with Robert Masello, to discuss What Your Body Knows About Happiness: How to Use Your Body to Change Your Mind.
Standing up straight can boost your confidence. Smiling—even when you don’t feel like it—can lift your mood. But why does this work? We tend to think the brain is in charge, telling the body what to feel. New science reveals the opposite is often true: the body reacts first, and the brain follows its lead. With a few simple changes, you can use your body to spark happiness and increase your joy, love and creativity.
In What Your Body Knows About Happiness, New York Times bestselling author Janice Kaplan dives into groundbreaking research that shows how deeply our physical sensations shape our emotions. With her trademark humor, curiosity, and storytelling, Kaplan translates complex science into fascinating, practical insights you can use every day.
Janice Kaplan is a journalist, TV producer, and the author of fifteen popular books including the New York Times bestseller The Gratitude Diaries and The Genius of Women. Janice was editor-in-chief of Parade magazine and the creator and executive producer of more than thirty primetime network television specials. She has appeared regularly on national TV shows including Today and Good Morning America and is a frequent guest on podcasts and radio shows. An energetic speaker at events around the country, she graduated from Yale University and lives in New York City.
Robert Masello is a journalist, TV writer, and the bestselling author of many novels and nonfiction books. His articles and essays have appeared widely in such publications as New York Magazine, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. His most recent books include an historical thriller, “The Haunting of H.G. Wells,” and the irreverent nonfiction guide “Robert’s Rules of Writing; Second Edition.” A native of Chicago, he now shares a Santa Monica townhouse, close to the beach, with his neighbor’s very independent and highly opinionated cat, Winston.

Memoir Talk: Jason G. Freen, with Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey, & Too Precious to Lose at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event
Join us to hear Jason G. Green, in conversation with Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey, discuss Too Precious to Lose.
A moving and inspiring memoir from a former Obama White House staffer, about his rural Maryland family’s untold history, the merger of three churches—one Black, two white—and how a radical embrace of community became their salvation, and his.
Jason G. Green was raised on fellowship—literally. Fellowship Lane served as a spiritual metaphor throughout his coming of age. A precocious preacher’s kid, Green felt a call to the ministry but ultimately devoted himself to public service. After working on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, the young attorney spent four and a half years serving in the White House as special assistant to President Obama.
However, Green’s government career was cut short by a devastating call. It seemed his beloved ninety-five-year-old grandmother was on her deathbed. At her side, he listened in disbelief while she detailed her life story dating back to her 1918 birth in Quince Orchard, a town that once stood where they now sat, erased by the vestiges of time. How could he have never known the legacy of this robust community that he’d descended from? How could its entire existence have vanished from history but for the memory of a few elders? Green’s historical research uncovered a surprising trove of tales about his newly freed ancestors who built an African American house of worship, and whose progeny, on the eve of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, made the brave decision to create an integrated church. Quince Orchard’s lost story is part of what Green calls the texture in the American fabric: the moral leadership of the Black church, the longstanding resilience of the Black community, and the transformative love of the Black family.
Jason G. Green is a Maryland-born community organizer, attorney, storyteller, and entrepreneur. Green served as special assistant to the president, and associate White House Counsel to President Obama, advising on economic and domestic policy matters. Green co-founded SkillSmart, a company that reshapes how communities measure economic impact, and is CEO of EverGreen Labs, where he supports visionary organizations working to expand economic opportunity and strengthen community. Green serves as trustee to the Pleasant View Historic Association and supports its efforts to preserve the historic site. His award-winning documentary, Finding Fellowship, explores the rich history of Quince Orchard and the fight to preserve its legacy. A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and Yale Law School, Green remains rooted in the work of truth and justice, investing in stories that remind us who we are. He currently spends time between Maryland and Dallas, Texas, with his wife, Ritu, and son, Aidan.
Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey is a political journalist, Pepperdine University professor and prominent convener in the fields of dialogue and social change. Throughout his career, he’s been featured on various media outlets, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, MSNBC, CNN, CBS News, SiriusXM, and as a daily news anchor for FOX Broadcasting and FOX SOUL. Now he serves as Host & White House Correspondent for A More Perfect Union radio talk show and podcast produced by KBLA.

Melissa Clark & Force of Nature at Book Soup – In-Person YA Event
Join us to hear Melissa Clark present and discuss her debut YA novel Force of Nature.
Who is Chloe Lovejoy, really? A straight-C student, a girl with a crush on the cutie from chorus, an all-powerful being responsible for taking care of the planet…or perhaps all three. That’s what Chloe finds out on her sixteenth birthday, when she unexpectedly inherits the role of Mother Nature from her grandmother. Chloe is overwhelmed, to say the least. Then, when the unthinkable happens, and Grandma is no longer around to guide her, Chloe is left to oversee the natural laws of the world all by herself.
Between managing earthquakes and hurricanes, rivals at school, and her not-very-helpful mother, Chloe tries to maintain balance and harmony on Earth and in her everyday life. But someone in the community has an eye toward harnessing her powers for nefarious purposes, which means Chloe needs to dig deep and get her act together before her secret is found out. After all, the universe is depending on her.
Force of Nature by Melissa Clark is an utterly unique coming of age story about a teen girl rising to the occasion, even when she feels completely in over her head.

At Skylight: Nayantara Roy, with Rufi Thorpe, & Sisters of a Halved Heart at Skylight – In-Person Event
Nayantara Roy, in conversation with Rufi Thorpe, will present and discussSisters of a Halved Heart, a story of two sisters who must navigate a terrible betrayal within their family.
Indian-American Mira Guhathakurta is a poetry editor at a distinguished literary magazine in New York. She reconnects with Jack, an old acquaintance from college, and feels as if she might have found her soulmate. All that remains is for Jack to meet her family: her beloved father and sister Joy, a high-powered lawyer. But when Joy commits an unthinkable act of betrayal, the sisters are impossibly fractured and their father’s heart is broken. As the sisters navigate their tumultuous relationship and Mira starts over, it turns out that Joy isn’t the only one who has been or continues to be dishonest.
In a propulsive story of love and passion and the ultimate pull of family and for fans of The Rachel Incident and The Paper Palace, Sisters of a Halved Heart examines the lengths we will go to in order to make our own narratives of love work out, the lies we tell ourselves, and the ways in which the truth, often right in front of you, can be impossible to see.
Nayantara Roy’s debut novel, The Magnificent Ruins, was a New York Times Editor’s Choice novel of 2024, an LA Times Editor’s Pick, a Washington Post Best Book, a People Magazine Best Book and an Apple best debut among others. The book is currently being adapted for television. In 2018, Roy won the Rick DeMarinis Short Story Prize for her short story, “8C.” Her plays have been performed internationally, in the UK and India. By day, she is the Senior Vice President of Television at Sandbox Entertainment where she acquires and develops original scripted series. She was born in Kolkata and now lives in Los Angeles.
Rufi Thorpe is the author of four novels, most recently Margo’s Got Money Troubles which was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize and the Mark Twain Prize, a Book of the Month pick as well as winner of the Libby Award for Best Bookclub Pick, and is soon to be a series on Apple TV. The Knockout Queen was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award and a Book of the Month pick, and her first novel The Girls from Corona del Mar was long-listed for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the First Novel Prize. Her work has been translated into 18 languages. She received her MFA from the University of Virginia and now teaches at The Book Incubator, an online MFA alternative program. Special Author Event: Kady Eshleman & Into the Depths I Go at pages: a bookstore – In-Person Event
Join us to welcome Kady Eshleman who will be discussing her new book Into the Depths I Go.
In a small island town shaped by whispered legends, Hallie Spooner’s family is known for believing in impossible creatures—especially her father, who’s ridiculed for insisting the sea holds secrets no one wants to admit.
Hallie has spent her life trying, and failing, not to believe. Not in magic. Not in myths. Not in anything that would dare set her apart. Then a boy drifts into town one summer, restless and fleeting as the tide, and she lets herself fall into the beautiful uncertainty of first love. It’s intoxicating, and far more dangerous than she realizes.
As Hallie navigates the trials and tribulations of this first love, her brother uncovers unsettling truths about their family’s past—truths that suggest the island’s legends are more than superstition. When old loyalties surface, and long forgotten secrets rise up from the depths, Hallie finds herself caught in the crosshairs of a perilous game driven by greed and revenge, forced to confront the reality of lost love and a legacy she never asked to inherit.
Some stories don’t stay buried, and the sea has a way of calling back its own.

The headlines point too close to home: her father’s ties to an opioid empire, a sinister secret society, and her own complicity in the systems holding it all together.
Then there’s Peter Holiday, a disgraced professor running a rehab scam so audacious it’s almost admirable. When their lives collide, Susie and Peter are dragged into a web of privilege, corruption, and violence, where every escape leads deeper into the rot.
Dark, satirical, and razor-sharp, Kill Dick is a modern literary thriller that unflinchingly dissects wealth, exploitation, and the perilous line between survival and self-destruction.

Two generations of a Muslim Indian family grapple with what parts of life we control and what we must humbly accept in pursuit of the American dream—for readers of Min Jin Lee, Mohsin Hamid, and Ayad Akhtar
In suburban Miami, sixty-year-old Sakeena—co-owner of a Dunkin’ franchise along with her husband, Ramzan—has nine months to live unless she consents to an organ transplant. Thirty years ago, at Ramzan’s behest, she left her beloved Rawalpindi, India, for the United States. In the years that followed, she compromised her belief in naseeb, the Muslim notion of destiny, and acquiesced to fertility treatments. This time, she is adamant that she should live as intended—without medical intervention. As her health deteriorates, Ramzan desperately seeks to reunite their grown children with the hope of convincing Sakeena to extend her life.
But there are complications. Eldest daughter Fareen is consumed by an important business deal that, if successful, will land her a highly desired (and lucrative) promotion. Meanwhile, youngest son Adnan is living abroad and unable to return to the States due to his own unscrupulous business practices, a pattern stretching back to his adolescence. If they have any hope of saving their mother’s life, the siblings must take extraordinary action to wrestle with their life choices, actions that reveal the always-present tension between ambition and fate.
Brought to life by prose that captures the spirit of contemporary Miami as effortlessly as it conveys the challenges of running a Dunkin’ franchise, Abundance is a beautiful, moving read from an exciting new American voice.
Hafeez Lakhani was born in Hyderabad, India, and raised in suburban South Florida. His fiction and essays have appeared in Crazyhorse, Exposition Review, Salt Hill Journal, Tikkun, The Cortland Review, and The Southern Review, among other publications. He has received fellowships from PEN America and the Center for Fiction, has been recognized twice with a Notable Essay in Best American Essays.
Natashia Deón is an NAACP Image Award Nominee, practicing criminal attorney, and college professor. A Pamela Krasney Moral Courage Fellow, Deón is the author of the critically acclaimed debut novel, Grace, which was named a Best Book by The New York Times. She is also the author of The Perishing, a nominee for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards in Fiction. Deón has been awarded fellowships by PEN America, Prague Summer Program for Writers, Dickinson House in Belgium, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

Justine Bateman, with Steve Agee & Fame: The Hijacking of Reality at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Author Justien Bateman, in conversation with Steve Agee, will discuss Fame: The Hijacking of Reality.
Fame is woven into our lives in ways that may have been unimaginable in years past.
And yet, is fame even real? Contrary to tangible realities, fame is one of those “realities” that we, as a society, have made. Why is that, and what is it about fame that drives us to spend so much time, money, and focus to create the framework that maintains its health?
Mining decades of experience, writer, director, producer, and actress Justine Bateman writes a visceral, intimate look at the experience of Fame. Combining the internal reality-shift of the famous, theories on the public’s behavior at each stage of a famous person’s career, and the experiences of other famous performers, Bateman takes the reader inside and outside the emotions of Fame. The book includes a sixteen-page, full-color photo insert to highlight her analysis and a brand-new preface to the paperback edition.

Book Event: Authors Dhonielle Clayton, Nic Stone, Ashley Woodfolk, & Nicola Yoon, moderated by Jumata Emil, & Breakout at Reparations Club – In-Person Event
For Thurgood Marshall Academy’s best and brightest—five friends who’ve been thick as thieves since kindergarten—this spring break is all about forgetting: they want nothing more than to wash away last year’s tragedy, and the human-shaped hole it left in their friend group.
It’s a hole the new kid, Anthony Brooks, seems to fit right into. So, when he invites the Five to join him on a private island for a week at his dad’s luxury resort, they agree with zero hesitation. No one’s counting on a freak tropical storm swooping in and killing the vibe. And speaking of killing, they’re also ill-prepared for the mounting collection of dead bodies…including (another) one of their own.
As their dream trip unravels, everything they tried to leave behind—secrets, lies, betrayals, dead best friends—seems to be washing up on the shore of their lives for everyone to see. Will any of them make it out alive?
From the bestselling, award-winning team behind Blackout and Whiteout—DHONIELLE CLAYTON, TIFFANY D. JACKSON, NIC STONE, ANGIE THOMAS, ASHLEY WOODFOLK, AND NICOLA YOON—comes a thriller that begs the question: is it possible to outrun the worst thing you’ve ever done?

At Skylight: Kate Rose Weiner and Kailea Rose Lofton, with Kyle T. Mays, & Compassion in Crisis at Skylight – In-Person Event
Kate Rose Weiner and Kailea Rose Lofton, in conversation with Kyle T. Mays, will discuss Compassion in Crisis.
Crisis looms large in daily life. From failing public health infrastructure to resource shortages, endless wars, and melting ice caps the crisis in education is inseparable from the crisis in loneliness, spurred on by the interests and fantasies of a small group of wealthy individuals, for whose sake whole swaths of our planet burn. The name for this compounding disaster is polycrisis.
Confronted with this situation, Kate Rose Weiner and Kailea Rose Loften began collaborating on what would become Compassion in Crisis: Building Disaster-Resilient Communities, a book that presents a strategy for catastrophe guided by values of curiosity and communal care. Knowing this is work with long-growing roots, Weiner and Loften gather a choir of organizers, educators, and healers from across North America to speak to their experiences responding to disaster. Compassion in Crisis is a book of energizing dialogues and clear-eyed checklists for everything from water purification to somatic practices. Readers will learn how to prepare baby formula in an emergency, how to best use stinging nettle or chamomile flowers for first-aid, alongside tips for paying attention to the different responses of our nervous systems to stress.
For many, the word “prepper” conjures images of underground bunkers and rural compounds; it’s an endeavor of individuals. The kind of preparedness such ideologies offer focuses on the survival of one, cut off from (or outright against) their neighbors. Compassion in Crisis affirms that true preparedness is the practice of honoring change, learning to steady ourselves and what we love in the face of it, and remembering that the world we want only follows from acting as if we live there already.
Kailea Rose Loften is a mother of Tahltan, Kaska, and Black American ancestry. She is the coeditor for the community publisher Loam and has guided climate change policy with an emphasis on Indigenous rights, previously serving as a Climate Commissioner for the City of Petaluma, California.
Kate Rose Weiner is a writer, editor, and publisher working at the intersections of culture and climate justice. She is the coeditor of community publisher Loam and the director of Loam Library, a mobile library committed to bringing the power of print to the people. Kate’s work is shaped by her studies in environmental art, social practice, and community herbalism.
Kyle T. Mays is an Afro-Indigenous (Saginaw Chippewa) writer and scholar. He is a professor of African American studies, American Indian studies, and history at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the author or co-author of four books, including Rethinking the Red Power Movement (with Sam Hitchmough), City of Dispossessions: Indigenous Peoples, African Americans, and the Creation of Modern Detroit, An Afro-Indigenous History of the United States, and Hip Hop Beats, Indigenous Rhymes: Modernity and Hip Hop in Indigenous North America.

Unmodern Love: An Evening of Poetry with Four Poets at Beyond Baroque – In-Person Event
L.A. based poets Derrick C. Brown (Los Feliz Poet Laureate), Brendan Constantine, Aman K. Batra, and Micah Bournes read from their new collections in The Wanda Coleman Theater.
Derrick C. Brown’s new collection A Little Grief Break (Write Bloody Publishing) collects three decades honing in his unique poetic style with sharp humor, bar-stool philosophy, and the raw immediacy of performance.
Brendan Constantine’s The Opposite Games (Red Hen Press) is his fifth collection, presenting a framework of odes, lists, memoirs, and classroom assignments, where the poet asks us to think critically about how we define and understand each other.
Aman K. Batra’s Stolen Thing produces a lyrical meditation on hyphenated identity. This collection traces the subtle ways xenophobia and cultural erasure surfaces—at a concert, during a Fourth of July celebration, and relationship patterns.
Micah Bournes’s Don’t Look Away (Sideshow Media Group) is a book linked to his hip-hop album “Til We All Free” and a song by song breakdown containing protest and social justice themes behind each track.
Derrick C. Brown is an award-winning poet, storyteller, comic and president of Write Bloody Publishing. His innovative fusion of poetry and comedy earned Paste Magazine’s Comedy Album of the Year (2023). The New York Times praises his work as “a rekindling of faith in the weird, hilarious, shocking, beautiful power of words.” A former paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, Brown has authored ten poetry collections and four children’s books, winning the Texas Book of the Year award for Poetry. He serves as the 2025/26 Poet Laureate of Los Feliz.
Aman K. Batra is a Punjabi-American poet from Artesia, California. A TEDx speaker and National Poetry Slam finalist, she has toured across the U.S. and internationally. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University and a BA in English from UCLA. Her work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Button Poetry, and All Def Poetry. As an educator and creative facilitator, she leads arts-based programs and designs workshops rooted in storytelling, poetic craft, and intergenerational healing.
Micah Bournes was born kicking and screaming. His art indulges life to the fullest, unafraid of hot topics, his music and poetry confronts fear like bare feet on scorching coals. Born and raised in Long Beach, he finds beauty in each grain of sand between his toes. Micah’s passionate performance is a roundhouse to the heart, a necessary kick in the butt, encouraging each of us to shed the shackles of bootstraps, laces, socks, and shoes. To ground our heels in the soft soil of Mother Earth and learn to walk in liberation.
Brendan Constantine is poet based in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in many standards, including Poetry, Best American Poetry, The Nation, and Poem a Day. A popular performer, Brendan has presented his work to audiences throughout the United States and Europe, also appearing on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered,’ TED ED, numerous podcasts and YouTube. His fifth collection The Opposites Game is out now from Red hen Press. He currently teaches at the Windward School and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

André M. Carrington & The Black Fantastic and Audiofuturism at Cellar Door Bookstore, Riverside – In-Person Event
You saw him here at Cellar Door Bookstore for the incredible anthology he edited, The Black Fantastic, and now author and UCR associate professor of English andré m. carrington is coming back to talk about his newest book, Audiofuturism: Science Fiction Radio Drama and the Black Fantastic Imagination on Friday, June 5th at 6:00.
Audiofuturism uncovers the vibrant, overlooked history of radio adaptations that placed Black speculative writing before mass audiences, showing how sound shaped the politics and pleasures of twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture. While adaptation studies has long privileged film and sound studies has centered Black music, andre m. carrington redirects attention to radio drama to demonstrate how performance translates the Black fantastic imagination into an audible cultural heritage. Drawing on scripts, surviving recordings, production files, and author archives, the book reconstructs how radio made listeners hear literature differently and how those sonic interpretations reverberate through American Studies, media history, and Black literary traditions.
andré carrington is a scholar of race, gender, and genre in Black and American cultural production. His first book, Speculative Blackness: The Future of Race in Science Fiction (Minnesota, 2016) interrogates the cultural politics of race in the fantastic genres and fan cultures. He is editor of The Black Fantastic, the Library of America anthology of contemporary short speculative fiction by Black authors. His forthcoming book, Audiofuturism, on radio adaptations of Black speculative texts. He is past recipient of fellowships from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard and the National Humanities Center. An unforgettable and heartwarming book-club debut following a trans high school teacher from a small town in South Dakota who befriends the only other trans woman she knows: one of her students.
Erica Skyberg is thirty-five years old, recently divorced—and trans. Not that she’s told anyone yet. Mitchell, South Dakota, isn’t exactly bursting with other trans women. Instead, she keeps to herself, teaching by day and directing community theater by night. That is, until Abigail Hawkes enters her orbit.
Abigail is seventeen, Mitchell High’s resident political dissident and Only Trans Girl. It’s a role she plays faultlessly, albeit a little reluctantly. She’s also annoyed by the idea of spending her senior year secretly guiding her English teacher through her transition. But Abigail remembers the uncertainty—and loneliness—that comes with it. Besides, Erica isn’t the only one struggling to shed the weight of others’ expectations.
As their unlikely friendship evolves, it comes under the scrutiny of their community. And soon, both women—and those closest to them—are forced to ask: Who are we if we choose to hide ourselves? What happens once we disappear into the woodwork?
Emily St. James is a writer and cultural critic. This is her first novel. Her journalism and criticism have appeared in The New York Times, Vox, and The A.V. Club, and her writing for television has been featured on the Emmy-nominated series Yellowjackets. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.

Dr. Darby Saxbe, with Ken Bensinger, & Dad Brain: The New Science of Fatherhood and How It Shapes Men’s Lives at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Dr. Darby Saxbe, in conversation with Ken Bensinger, will discuss and sign Dad Brain: The New Science of Fatherhood and How It Shapes Men’s Lives.
When we talk about the transformative experience of birth and child-rearing, we almost always focus on mothers. While biomedical research oversamples men, the opposite is true when it comes to research on birth and parenting. In the past few decades, studies have proliferated on how women’s bodies and brains change as they begin their families. Headlines and movie plotlines revolve around overworked moms—often accompanied by the image of inept dads muddling through a diaper change. The antiquated, but persistent, implication is that moms are “natural” parents, instinctive and nurturing, and dads are better left to the boardroom and golf course. With DAD BRAIN: The New Science of Fatherhood and How It Shapes Men’s Lives (Flatiron; June 9, 2026), psychologist and researcher Darby Saxbe leverages 15 years of studying fathers to do a deep dive into the science behind fatherhood—and what she finds will upend the way we think about men as parents.

Merrill Joan Gerber & Someone Should Know This Story: Selected Stories at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Join us to hear Merrill Joan Gerber discuss her book, Someone Should Know This Story: Selected Stories.
‘Someone Should Know This Story’ is both the name of this book and the wish of my heart,” writes Merrill Joan Gerber in the introduction to this retrospective collection of twenty-five stories written over a period of four decades, many of which won awards and appeared in widely read periodicals such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Redbook, and Mademoiselle. Gerber takes her teacher Andrew Lytle’s advice to “follow the thread back into the labyrinth” of the heart and its secrets. Finding its starting place with the crises of everyday family life-its conflicts, betrayals, confinements, and its devastating losses-she and her characters constantly reencounter themselves and the persistent yearning to “convey to others what we are” with grace and breathtaking honesty.

A magical, time-travelling love story, from the world of The Midnight Library.

This year our seasonal theme is: Heat Rising 🔥
Heat is a powerful form of energy, vital for survival. It is supplied from the sun, the stove for a home-cooked meal, the hugs we give each other, redistributed through touch and connection. It is light, warmth, and care in times of turmoil. It can be found in the fire ignited within ourselves. Fire can burst into chaos, a symbol for uprisings and revolution, but also renewal. It rises and inspires change. It can also burn out and in the aftermath, allow growth and new life to emerge.
Each month, we will have a connecting theme regarding heat and just like us, whether individually or together – the different processes it may go through to rise up.
