Colin Dayan & In the Belly of Her Ghost at Chevalier’s Bookstore

Here for the first time she turns her rigorous intellect toward her vexed relationship with her mother, and subsequent suffering. Plus, she does so with her usual uncompromising clarity in a book that is not exactly an easy read, but one that’s hard to put down, according Madison Smartt Bell.

Colin (Joan) Dayan is the Robert Penn Warren Professor in the Humanities at Vanderbilt University, and the author of: Haiti, History, and the God, The Story of Cruel and Unusual, The Law Is a White Dog, and With Dogs at the Edge of Life. her memoirs of growing up in Georgia have been published in The Yale Review, Southwest Review, and LARB, among others.

downloadRed Hen Press 25th Anniversary Poetry Reading at the Annenberg Beach House

Please join us to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Red Hen Press with a poetry reading event featuring four Red Hen Press poets:

Katherine Coles is a poet and educator who served from 2006-2012 as Utah’s third poet laureate, and currently serves as inaugural director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute and the co-director of the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature.

Matty Layne Glasgow is the author of the poetry collection, deciduous queen, selected by Richard Blanco as the winner of the Benjamin Saltman Award and forthcoming from Red Hen Press in 2019.

Kim Dower is the author of four poetry collections, all from Red Hen Press: Air Kissing on Mars (2010), Slice of Moon (2013), Last Train to the Missing Planet (2016), and her new book, Sunbathing on Tyrone Powers’ Grave (2019).

Jessy Randall is the author of the poetry collections: Suicide Hotline Hold (2016), There Was an Old Woman (2015), Injecting Dreams into Cows (2012), A Day in Boyland (2007).

The readings will be accompanied by jeweler Nicole Foos’ talk on “Stories from Stones.”

Join us for a Moon Tide Press Reading by three authors:

Alexis Rhone Fancher, is the author of: How I Lost My Virginity to Michael Cohen, State of Grace: The Joshua Elegies, Enter Here and Junkie Wife. Her photographs are published worldwide, and she is a multiple Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee. She is also poetry editor of Cultural Weekly.

Ron Koertge taught English and Creative Writing at Pasadena City College for 37 years. He has published more than 25 books of poetry and fiction, most recently: Vampire Planet, Yellow Moving Van, and Coaltown Jesus. He is also 2018 Poet Laureate of South Pasadena, California.

Lee Rossi is the author of four books of poetry: Darwin’s Garden, Wheelchair Samurai, Ghost Diary, and Beyond Rescue.

Join us for Readings and Reflections: An Evening with Joyce Carol Oates, when the award-winning writer, essayist, poet, and novelist will read from her works, including Hazards of Time Travel (2018), and share personal reflections.

Joyce Carol Oates is a writer of more than 40 novels, a number of plays and novellas, and many volumes of short stories, poetry and nonfiction. She won the National Book Award for her novel them (1969), and two novels and two short story collections were each finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. She has taught at Princeton University since 1978 and is currently Professor Emerita in the Program in Creative Writing.

PictureEboo Patel: Author of the 2018 LMU Common Book at LMU

Join LMU students, faculty and staff as we welcome author, educator, and interfaith leader Eboo Patel to talk about his book Sacred Ground: Pluralism, Prejudice, and the Promise of America. This event is free and open to everyone in the LMU community.

Eboo Patel is a leading voice in the movement for interfaith cooperation and the Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), a national nonprofit working to make interfaith cooperation a social norm. He is the author of: Acts of Faith, Sacred Ground, Interfaith Leadership, and Out of Many Faiths. Eboo served on President Obama’s Inaugural Faith Council and is an expert on the topic of religious pluralism. For over fifteen years he has worked on and with many organizations to help realize a future where religion is a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division.

Los Angeles Literature Events 2/11/19 –2/17/19

Join us for the second week and first full-day of events of the annual Writers Week at UCR, the longest-running, free literary event in California, featuring renowned authors of the day alongside those at the start of promising careers. Tom Lutz is Writers Week director.

All events are free and open to the public, and parking is free (permits available at the Kiosk).

11 am: Aimee Bender is the author of five books of fiction, including The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, and most recently The Color Master. She lives in Los Angeles and teaches at USC.

1 pm: Arthur Sze is the author of ten books of poetry, including the forthcoming Sight Lines from Copper Canyon Press in 2019. He is also a translator and released The Silk Dragon: Translations from the Chinese in 2001. He is professor emeritus at the Institute of American Indian Arts and was first poet laureate of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives.

2:30 pm: Yxta Maya Murray is a novelist, art critic, and law professor at Loyola Law School. Her latest, Advise and Consent, will be published this year by LARB Books.

4 pm: Quincy Troupe (Steven Minot Lecturer)

Join us for Writer-in-Residence Wally Rudolph’s first of three public conversations at the Annenberg Community Beach House. In Creating Art in Times of Strife, Rudolph presents a series of one-on-one conversations with socially conscious artist across disciplines, informing how current political polarization and environmental crisis affect and inform each artist’s process and practice.

Christine Yoo’s forthcoming documentary, 26.2 to Life, chronicles a year in the life of San Quentin’s 1000 Mile Club, a prison running group training for an annual marathon inside the prison’s crowded lower yard: 105 laps to complete 26.2 miles. Wally and Christine discuss how the making of the film has affected her view of the prison industrial complex and the human cost of our justice system
