Writing Wrongs: Call-Outs, Correctness, and Culture Wars
Amid polarized politics, heightened awareness of the entrenched legacies of sexism, racism, and other forms of intolerance, and the rise of digital platforms where norms and boundaries are constantly renegotiated, writers and artists have been prompted to reconsider their roles. This event will begin with remarks from PEN America President Jennifer Egan, who will announce the results of PEN America’s annual Trustee election and reflect on the organization’s progress and goals. PEN America Chief Executive Officer, Suzanne Nossel, will moderate a panel which includes: playwright Ayad Ahktar, historian and former New York Review of Books Editor Ian Buruma, Slate‘s Inkoo Kang, The New York Times’ Wesley Morris, and novelist Francine Prose. A discussion with the audience will follow.

An Evening with Michael Ondaatje & Warlight at USC

Ondaatje is the Man Booker Prize winning author of The English Patient, and author most recently of the novel, Warlight. All you have to do is put your name on the signup list. The first half signup happens outside before doors open (around 8ish). Signing up for first half does not guarantee entry, so stay in line! The Anansi Writers Workshop was founded in 1990 by Kamau Daáood, Akilah Oliver, Nafis Nabawi and Anthony Lyons. In 1993, Michael Datcher initiated the development of a three-part format for the workshop. Their tradition of a community workshop began in the late 1960s at the Watts Writers’ Workshop, where World Stage co-founder Kamau Daáood started his writing career. The Anansi Writers Workshop is coordinated by V. Kali and Conney Williams.

NEA Big Read: A Lesson in Poetry at Anaheim Central Library

A Lesson in Poetry will welcome artists and poets Librecht Baker, Bridgette Bianca, and Shameka Cunningham for a discussion on the dynamics of poetry, performance art, and the importance of black visibility in the arts.
Librecht Baker is the author of vetiver (Finishing Line Press, 2017), writer in The Vagrancy’s Playwrights Group, a Sundress Publications’ Assistant Editor, and an English professor.
Bridgette Bianca is a poet and professor from South Central Los Angeles who has performed her work in many venues, locally and abroad. She has featured at the World Stage, the SoCal Poetry Fest, LA Lit Crawl, LitFest Pasadena, the Table Lit, the un::fade::able reading series, and much more.
Shameka Cunningham is a writer, poet, and performance artist from Los Angeles who has performed her work around the country and abroad. She is a Watering Hole Poetry Fellow and is obsessed with poetry, ice cream, and road trips.
