Behind the Book: Blake Hill-Saya via CalTechLive, Beckman Auditorium– Online Event

Join author Blake Hill-Saya for a discussion of her biography of her great-great grandfather, Arron McDuffie Moore: An African American Physician, Educator and Founder of Durham’s Black Wall Street, in this new CalTech Behind the Book event. The author will be interviewed by Monique Thomas, Program Coordinator in the CalTech Center for Inclusion & Diversity.

Blake Hill-Saya is a classical musician and creative writer living in Los Angeles. Born the biracial child of two literature professors, she is the CEO of Tenacity Communications in Los Angeles.

This new series presents conversations with authors who explore the intersection of arts, science, and society through the lens of their family histories. Behind the Book events are free and open to the public. Vroman’s Bookstore is a partner for the series and has copies of the books available for purchase.

Cover to Cover Reading Club for Kids, from October 5^th – November 13^th – Kids Event

Stop by the Orange Public Library & History Center to sign up for the In-N-Out Cover to Cover Reading Club, which will run until November 13^th. Kids ages 4-12 are eligible to participate. For every five books read, each child will receive a Cover to Cover Achievement certificate redeemable for one hamburger, cheeseburger, or gilled cheese. Earn up to three certificates per child, while supplies last.

Diane Leslie’s Book Club: A Door in the Earth by Amy Waldman at Diesel Bookstore

Author Amy Waldman discusses and signs her new novel, A Door in the Earth at Diane Leslie’s Book Club..

This book is a about an idealistic young Afghan-American woman trapped between her ideals and the complicated truth. Galvanized by a book she reads in college by humanitarian Gideon Crane, sensitive student Parveen makes a pilgrimage to a remote village in the land of her birth to make a difference, only to find the many fabrications in the memoir and decide where her loyalties lie. The author reported form Afghanistan for the New York Times after 9/11, and has created a taut, propulsive novel about power, perspective, and idealism to reveal complicated truths in our living history.

Join us to participate in DSTL Arts’ 10-week creative writing class, Conchas y Café, offered in English and Spanish for adults of all ages.

Your Author Series: Tao Nyeu at John C. Fremont Branch Library, LAPL – Kids Event

Please join us as Your Author Series welcomes children’s author and illustrator Tao Nyeu, as part of our Summer Author Program and Summer Reading challenge. The author will be reading her book, Squid and Octopus: Friends for Always, which shows us a glimpse into the life of two funny friends. She specializes in silk screens and water-based inks, giving her illustrations a distinctive style. Her work has won many awards, and has been influenced by Shel Silverstein, Richard Scarry, and Beatrix Potter.
