A Decade of Women Who Submit

For the past decade an international community of women and nonbinary writers have been working to claim space for themselves in an industry historically dominated by men. Known as Women Who Submit (WWS), the group supports and empowers its members to submit their work in spite of publishing’s inequities. Their achievements have been extraordinary: This July, the organization celebrates its tenth year, with twenty-seven chapters across the United States and Mexico, more than one hundred fifty successful book and magazine publication credits by its members in 2020, and a devoted community of writers, editors, and publishers.

Speaker Series: Meet Lynne Thompson, New Poet Laureate of Los Angelesvia The Ebell – Online Event
Lynne Thompson, since being appointed our new Poet Laureate in 2021 by Mayor Eric Garcetti, will share her path to this two year appointment, and discuss her writing and literary works.
Thompson is the author of three books of poetry: Start with a Small Guitar, Beg No Pardon, and Fretwork. She serves on the boards of Cave Canem and the Los Angeles Review of Books, and is chair of the Scripps College Board of Trustees. She has received numerous awards, and other recent work is forthcoming in New York Quarterly, New England Review, the 202 Best American Poetry, among others.

Since, she’s been studying and honing her craft as a journalist and editor, teaching others how to write and read deeply and crafting her own stories. Growing up poor and Black in the South—the land, the dialects, the people, the stories, the spirituality—influenced her deeply and shaped her as a writer.

LA Times’ Main Stage Event features Richard Thompson, in conversation with RJ Smith, who will present and discuss his memoir, Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice 1967-1975.
Richard Thompson is aninternational and longtime beloved musical legend, known for his brilliant songwriting, his extraordinary guitar playing, and his haunting voice. In this long-awaited memoir the British folk musician takes us back to the 1960s, a period of great change and creativity—both for him and the world at large. Thompson is the author of Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice, 1967-1975.
RJ Smith has been a senior editor at Los Angeles Magazine. a contributor to Blender, a columnist for Village Voice, a staff writer for Spin, and a writer for many journals, His book, The One: The Life and Music of James Brown, was among the New York Times’ “One Hundred Notable Books of 2012.” He is the interviewer for this event.

Indre Viskontas & How Music Can Make You Better via CalTech Live: Behind the Book – Online Event
Indre Viskontas combines a passion for music with scientific curiosity. She is a Professor of Sciences and Humanities at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of San Francisco, is a working opera singer, and serves as the Creative Director of Pasadena Opera.
Dr. Viskontas will be interviewed by Maya Jasper White, CalTech’s Director of Chamber music, about her book, How Music Can Make You Better, where she investigates what music is, and how it can change us for the better—from deep in our neurons to across our entire society.
