Queer Book Club: Hola Papi at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event
Participants will discuss Hola Papi: How to Come Out in a Walmart Parking Lot and Other Life Lessons byJohn Paul Brammer.
LGBTQ advice columnist John Paul Brammer writes a “wise and charming” (David Sedaris) memoir-in-essays chronicling his journey from a queer, mixed-race kid in America’s heartland to becoming the “Chicano Carrie Bradshaw” of his generation.
In this hilarious, tenderhearted book, JP shares his story of growing up biracial and in the closet in America’s heartland, while attempting to answer some of life’s most challenging questions: How do I let go of the past? How do I become the person I want to be? Is there such a thing as being too gay? Should I hook up with my grade school bully now that he’s out of the closet? Questions we’ve all asked ourselves, surely.
John Paul Brammer is an author, illustrator, and columnist from rural Oklahoma currently living in Brooklyn. He runs the popular advice column “¡Hola Papi!” on Substack. His work, including essays, short fiction, and illustrations, has appeared in The Washington Post, Food & Wine, Catapult, Business Insider, and many more. ¡Hola Papi! is his first book. He runs a print shop where he puts his artwork and designs at HolaPapiShop.com. You can keep up with him on Twitter or Instagram @JPBrammer.

Janet Clare, with J. Ryan Stradal, & True Home, at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Janet Clare, in conversation with J. Ryan Stradal, will discuss True Home.
Swanee Burrows, the restless, razor-sharp fifteen-year-old daughter of a scandal-ridden congressman and a flawed yet magnetic socialite, struggles to find her footing as her parents’ bitter and very public divorce spirals out of control. In the rain-soaked landscape of the Pacific Northwest, Swanee’s runaway attempts and the intricate web of deception surrounding her family bring her dangerously close to the edge of no return.
At its heart, True Home is a story about coming-of-age and coming to the truth-a tale of love, betrayal, and the dangerous risks we take to find where we truly belong. Janet Clare invites readers into a world where every relationship is a labyrinth and daring to love might just be the greatest danger of all.
True Home delivers the same piercing emotional clarity as the great domestic dramas of the late 20th century, inviting comparisons to Ordinary People and Endless Love. Yet, Clare forges her own path, presenting a story that feels at once timeless and thrillingly fresh.

Special Author Event: Heather Dandy Herbert and Chase Reynolds Ewald & California Coastal: Seaside Living from Sea Ranch to San Diego at pages, a bookstore – In-Person Event
Heather Dandy Herbert and Chase Reynolds Ewald will present and discuss California Coastal: Seaside Living from Sea Ranch to San Diego.
The California Coast is an iconic landscape, conjuring images of endless sunshine, pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, epic waves, and sinuous curving roads clinging to dramatic cliffs along a rugged coastline. Scenically rich and teeming with wildlife, California is also known for its laid-back, nature-forward, indoor-outdoor lifestyle. This is epitomized in the architecture and design of eighteen homes featured in the book, which speaks to the coastline’s special qualities—as well as its distinct hazards. The projects are organized into Northern Coast, Central Coast, and Southern Coast. Architectural styles range from traditional to modern, with added variety in the form of rustic modern, small-format bungalow, and renovations of existing buildings.
Heather Sandy Hebert has spent her life surrounded by the worlds of design and literature. After twenty-five years in the field of architecture, she now works with numerous design, hospitality, and wine clients, large and small, to help them craft and convey their stories. Her previous books are The New Architecture of Wine, At Home in the Wine Country, and Design Mixology. truenorthcreativestudio.com.
Chase Reynolds Ewald is the author of many books on architecture, design, craftsmanship, and western and rustic lifestyle. Her most recent books are At Home in the Wine Country; Bison: Portrait of an Icon; Rustic Modern; and Wild Sugar. A graduate of Yale University and U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, she lives in Northern California, works with clients across the country, and road-trips across the West whenever possible. chasereynoldsewald.com.

At Skylight: Cassandra Khaw, with Olivie Blake, & The Library at Hellebore, at Skylight – In-Person Event
Cassandra Khaw, in conversation with Olivie Blake, will discuss The Library at Hellebore.
The Hellebore Technical Institute for the Gifted is the premier academy for the dangerously powerful: the Anti-Christs and Ragnaroks, the world-eaters and apocalypse-makers.
Hellebore promises redemption, acceptance, and a normal life after graduation. At least, that’s what Alessa Li is told after she’s kidnapped and forcibly enrolled.
But the Institute is more than just a haven for monsters. On graduation day, the faculty embark on a ravenous rampage, feasting on their students. Trapped in the school’s cavernous library, Alessa and her surviving classmates must do something they were never taught: work together.
If they don’t, this school will eat them alive…
Cassandra Khaw is the USA Today bestselling and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Library at Hellebore, Nothing But Blackened Teeth, The Salt Grows Heavy, Breakable Things, and coauthor of The Dead Take the A Train with Richard Kadrey. They are an award-winning game writer.
Olivie Blake is the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six, Alone with You in the Ether, One for My Enemy, Masters of Death, Januaries, and Gifted & Talented. As Alexene Farol Follmuth, she is also the author of the young adult rom-coms Twelfth Knight and My Mechanical Romance. Virtual Book Club: The River Is Waiting via La Crescenta Library, LACL – Online Event
Join us weekly on Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 11am for the Virtual Book Club. In July we will be discussing The River Is Waiting, a novel by Wally Lamb.
It’s 1964. LBJ and Lady Bird are in the White House, Meet the Beatles is on everyone’s turntable, and ten-year-old Felix Funicello (distant cousin of the iconic Annette!) is doing his best to navigate fifth grade—easier said than done when scary movies still give you nightmares and you bear a striking resemblance to a certain adorable cartoon boy. But there are several things young Felix can depend on: the birds and bees are puzzling, television is magical, and this is one Christmas he’s never going to forget.
Each week we read and discuss 1/4 of the book. Please see the weekly discussion breakdown below.
Week 4: July 22: Parts 3 & 4 Page 321 to the end of the book.

LGBTQ+ Book Club: We Should Not Be Friends at West Hollywood Library, LACL – In-Person & Online Hybrid Event
Join the LGBTQ+ Book Club for a hybrid (in-person and online) discussion of We Should Not Be Friends: The Story of a Friendship by Will Schwalbe. For adults.
This is a hybrid event and will be hosted in person in the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room as well as on Zoom. Please register at the link below to receive the link to the meeting via email.
https://library-lacounty-gov.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0pd-Goqz4uGNNbzVuW720zsRrGxTK1VeLG
By the time Will Schwalbe was a junior at college, he had already met everyone he cared to know: the theater people, writers, visual artists and comp lit majors, and various other quirky characters including the handful of students who shared his own major, Latin and Greek. He also knew exactly who he wanted to avoid: the jocks. The jocks wore baseball caps and moved in packs, filling boisterous tables in the dining hall, and on the whole seemed to be another species entirely, one Will might encounter only at his own peril.
All this changed dramatically when Will collided with Chris Maxey, known to just about everyone as Maxey. Maxey was physically imposing, loud, and a star wrestler who was determined to become a Navy SEAL (where he would later serve for six years). Thanks to the strangely liberating circumstances of a little-known secret society at Yale, the two forged a bond that would become a mainstay of each other’s lives as they repeatedly lost and found each other and themselves in the years after graduation.

Chuck Hogan, with Marissa, Jeannie, Samira and Nicole (the Four Moms), & The Carpool Detectives: A True Story of Four Moms, Two Bodies, and One Mysterious Cold Case at Diesel, A Bookstore – In- Person Event
Chuck Hogan, with Marissa, Jeannie, Samira and Nicole (the Four Moms),will discuss The Carpool Detectives: A True Story of Four Moms, Two Bodies, and One Mysterious Cold Case.
A lot of us like to think we could solve a mystery. But do you have what it takes? The Carpool Detectives is what happens when a group of LA moms—with kids getting older and careers long in the rearview—band together and crack a double homicide wide open. It’s a jaw-dropping work of a true crime, and a poignant story of motherhood, the power of community, and how shared purpose can bring us together. Unique to the genre, this story is being revealed for the very first time in these pages.
In 2020, Marissa, Jeannie, Samira, and Nicole find themselves at a familiar crossroads: when motherhood takes charge of their lives, they begin grappling with their own identities. Their thriving careers seem like a lifetime ago, and as their children become more independent, they struggle to find purpose. But when they meet at a bowling night fundraiser for their kids’ school, they discover a shared interest in true crime that crystalizes around a mysterious double homicide that took place in their hometown of Los Angeles a decade earlier: A couple in their 60s vanished overnight from their home and mysteriously shuttered their family business, leaving millions of dollars unaccounted for. Initially believed to have absconded with the money, they went from suspects to victims when their bodies were discovered in their car at the bottom of a steep ravine. And then the case turned cold.
But what if the moms could solve it? What if they could bring a killer to justice and give closure to a grieving family? The four women have no connection to the case and no law-enforcement background, but the determined group find themselves in incredible and often dangerous situations–digging for evidence in prohibited ravines, scouring potential crime scenes for blood splatter, and sifting through pages and pages of dense police files. As they get more entangled in this complex investigation, they also find themselves in real danger—and with information that could blow the case wide open.
Chuck Hogan is the author of several acclaimed New York Times bestsellers, including Prince of Thieves, which was awarded the Hammett Prize and adapted into the hit feature film The Town starring Ben Affleck. His most recent novel, Gangland, was selected as one of The New York Times’s Ten Best Crime Novels of the year and nominated for an Edgar Award. The Carpool Detectives is his first work of nonfiction.

Ticketed Event: Parvati Shallow & Nice Girls Don’t Win: How I Burned It All Down to Claim My Power at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Book Soup presents Parvati Shallow who will sign Nice Girls Don’t Win: How I Burned It All Down to Claim My Power.
This workbook is not here to heal your inner child with fairy dust. It’s here to weaponize your truth. Inspired by Nice Girls Don’t Win by Parvati Shallow, this is your brutal guide to stop performing, stop shrinking, and stop making yourself digestible to people who don’t even deserve your shadow.
A bold, eye-opening memoir about survival, trauma, and healing, from one of reality television’s most talked-about stars
At twenty-five years old, Parvati Shallow was plunged into fame and fortune after becoming the million-dollar winner of the reality television series Survivor. But despite her success, the ghosts of her traumatic past, coupled with the harsh glare of the public eye, kept her locked in a survival cycle of fear and shame that sabotaged her self-confidence and eroded her self-trust. It wasn’t until a series of painful life events, including the death of her younger brother and a challenging divorce, that she found herself on a path of healing that would awaken her true power and reset the course of her life.
In Nice Girls Don’t Win, Shallow shares the stories that allowed her to transform her most difficult moments into potent catalysts for empowerment. From her childhood growing up in a Florida commune run by a tyrannical female guru, to her journey out of the South and into the L.A. casting rooms that would eventually drop her in the lush but brutal landscapes of Survivor, Shallow shows readers what it took to build herself into the ultimate survivor—for better and, more often, for worse. She then reveals what it took to rebuild herself into something much greater.

At Skylight: Kathleen Kaufman, with A. Rae Dunlap, & The Entirely True Story of the Fantastical Mesmerist Nora Gray, at Skylight – In-Person Event
Kathleen Kaufman, in conversation with A. Rae Dunlap, will discuss The Entirely True Story of the Fantastical Mesmerist Nora Gray.
As spiritualism reaches its fevered pitch at the dawn of the 20th century, a Scottish girl crosses the veil to unlock a powerful connection within an infamous asylum in this thrillingly atmospheric, exquisitely evocative exploration of feminine rage and agency for readers of Sarah Penner, Alice Hoffman, and Hester Fox.
Leaving behind a quiet life of simple comforts, Nairna Liath traverses the Scottish countryside with her charlatan father, Tavish. From remote cottages to rural fairs, the duo scrapes by on paltry coins as Tavish orchestrates “encounters” with the departed, while Nairna interprets tarot cards for those willing to pay for what they wish to hear.
But beyond her father’s trickery, Nairna possesses a genuine gift for communicating with the spirit world, one that could get an impoverished country girl branded a witch. A talent inherited from her grandmother, Lottie Liath, widow of a Welsh coalminer, whose story of imprisonment and exploitation in a notorious asylum is calling out to Nairna from four decades past—a warning to break free from the manipulations, greed, and betrayals of others.
What do the cards hold for Nairna’s future?
Kathleen Kaufman is an author of magical realism and feminist gothic horror, exploring “the other” from “the other’s” point of view, how the horror of the past manifests in the present, and the inescapable intertwining of generational history. Her prose has been praised by Kirkus Reviews as “crisp, elegant” and “genuinely chilling” by Booklist. She is the author of the Diabhal trilogy, The Lairdbalor (soon to be a feature film directed by Nicholas Verso), Hag, and The Tree Museum. Originally from Colorado, Kathleen is a professor at Santa Monica College and lives in Los Angeles with her husband, son, kitten, and hound. Visit her online at KathleenKaufman.com.
A. (Amanda) Rae Dunlap studied film and Victorian literature at Northwestern University and spends her days as a trailer editor at Disney, bringing to life the magic of the world’s most influential storytellers for audiences everywhere. Born and raised in Okemos, Michigan, she now lives with her husband in a small mountain town in Southern California.

Kathleen Kaufman, with Jo Kaplan, & The Entirely True Story of the Fantastical Mesmerist Nora Grey at Diesel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event
Kathleen Kaufman, in conversation with Jo Kaplan, will present and discuss The Entirely True Story of the Fantastical Mesmerist Nora Grey.
Nora Grey follows a young woman, Narina, who is pulled from a lifetime of hoax seances and roadside tarot readings by the powerful yet mysterious Edinburgh Spiritualist Society. Recognizing that Narina has true power, the Spiritualists encourage Narina to cross the veil and make a connection with her ‘spirit guide,’ a spirit who can help her communicate with others from beyond the grave. In doing so, Narina’s psychic abilities shatter the barriers between space and time, leading her to form a bond with another young woman wrongfully imprisoned in an infamous asylum decades before Narina’s birth.
Leaving behind a quiet life of simple comforts, Nairna Liattraverses the Scottish countryside with her charlatan father, Tavish.
Rescued from homelessness by a well-connected stranger, Nairna is whisked into a new life among Edinburgh’s elite Spiritualist circle, including visiting American star Dorothy Kellings. Researchers, doctors, psychics, and thrill-seekers clamor for the rising young medium. But after a séance with blood-chilling results, a shocking scandal ensues, and Nairna flees to a secluded community near Boston, where she assumes a new identity: Nora Grey.
But Nora can’t stay hidden when Dorothy Kellings offers her the chance to face all comers and silence skeptics at a spectacular séance at Boston’s Old South Meeting Hall, where Nora will come face to face at last with her spiritual guide: the courageous Lottie Liath, whose heart-wrenching story and profound messages are indelibly tied to Nora’s destiny.
Jo Kaplan is a Shirley Jackson Award nominated author. Her novels include: It Will Just Be Us, When the Night Bells Ring, and The Midnight Muse. Her short stories have appeared in Fireside Quarterly, Black Static, Nightmare Magazine, Vastarien, Horror Library, Nightscript, and a variety of anthologies. In addition to writing, she teaches English and creative writing at Glendale Community College and is the co-chair of the Horror Writers Association’s Los Angeles chapter. She also plays cello in both the Symphony of the Verdugos and the band Guerra/paz.

Author Talk: Pria Anand & The Mind Electric via Virtual Program, LACL – Online Event
You’re invited to a conversation with neurologist and author Pria Anand to chat about her new book The Mind Electric, that looks at the stories we tell ourselves about our brains, and the stories that our brains tell to us.
A girl believes she has been struck blind for stealing a kiss. A mother watches helplessly as each of her children is replaced by a changeling. A woman is haunted each month by the same four chords of a single song. In neurology, illness is inextricably linked with narrative, the clues to unraveling these mysteries hidden in both the details of a patient’s story and the tells of their body.
Stories are etched into the very structure of our brains, coded so deeply that the impulse for storytelling survives and even surges after the most devastating injuries. But our brains are also porous—the stories they concoct are shaped by cultural narratives about bodies and illness that permeate the minds of doctors and patients alike. In the history of medicine, some stories are heard, while others—the narratives of women, of Black and brown people, of displaced people, of disempowered people—are too often dismissed.
In The Mind Electric, neurologist Pria Anand reveals—through case study, history, fable, and memoir—all that the medical establishment has overlooked: the complexity and wonder of brains in health and in extremis, and the vast gray area between sanity and insanity, doctor and patient, and illness and wellness, each separated from the next by the thin veneer of a different story.
Moving from the Boston hospital where she treats her patients, to her childhood years in India, to Isla Providencia in the Caribbean and to the Republic of Guinea in West Africa, she demonstrates the compelling paradox at the heart of neurology: that even the most peculiar symptoms can show us something universal about ourselves as humans. Register now to join this intriguing virtual conversation!
Pria Anand is a neurologist at the Boston Medical Center and an Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. She is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Medical School, and she trained in neurology, neuro-infectious diseases, and neuroimmunology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Author Event: Jennifer Pastiloff, with Debbie Millman, & Proof of Life at Zibby’s Bookshop, Santa Monica – In-Person Event
Jennifer Pastiloff will celebrate the launch of Proof of Life. She will be joined in conversation by Debbie Millman.
An urgent rallying cry to stop holding back and start living life on your terms.
Jen Pastiloff convinced herself: My life is fine and fine’s enough, until the whisper that something was missing turned full-on scream.
This is Pastiloff’s account of how she reclaimed her voice and desire by radically changing her life. She did this despite believing that change equaled death ever since her beloved father died when she was eight. (Much to her shock, change did not equal death.) She shows us it is never too late to begin again, or to let go of stories like: I don’t deserve this; I don’t get to be happy; no one will love me; I’m too old, to name a few.
Through this book, you’ll quiet your Inner Asshole, participate in the cathartic process of Shame Loss, ignore the Imaginary Time Gods, use creativity as a portal into healing and connection, and become your own permission slip. Complete with takeaways in Jen’s signature style, creativity prompts, and poetry, Proof of Life is funny, inspiring, and full of love. This book is a reminder that your birthright is not stress or shame and that you don’t have to show proof that you are worthy or deserving. You are your own proof of life.
Jennifer Pastiloff trots the globe as a public speaker and to host her retreats to Italy, as well as her one-of-a-kind workshops, which she has taught to thousands of people all over the world. The author of the popular Substack, also called Proof of Life, she teaches writing and creativity classes called Allow, and workshops called Shame Loss, when she isn’t painting and selling her art. She has been featured on Good Morning America, and Katie Couric, and in New York magazine, People, Shape, Health magazine, and other media outlets for her authenticity and unique voice. She is deaf, reads lips, and mishears almost everything, but what she hears is usually funnier (at least she thinks so). The author of the national bestseller On Being Human, Pastiloff lives in Southern California with her son, Charlie Mel.
Debbie Millman, named “one of the most creative people in business” by Fast Company, “one of the most influential designers working today” by GDUSA, and a “Woman of Influence” by Success magazine, Debbie Millman is an author, educator, designer, and podcast pioneer. She is the host of the Webby and Signal award-winning podcast Design Matters, one of the first and longest-running podcasts in the world. Debbie serves as Chair of the first-ever Masters in Branding Program at the School of Visual Arts, Editorial Director of PrintMag.com, and is the author of eight books.

At Skylight: Sam Bloch, with Nithia Raman, & Shade, at Skylight – In-Person Event
Sam Bloch, in conversation with Nithia Raman, will discuss Shade, which brings together science, history, urban design, and social justice to change the way we think about a critical natural resource that should be available to all.
On a 90-degree day in Los Angeles, bus riders across the city line up behind the shadows cast by street signs and telephone poles, looking for a little relief from the sun’s glaring heat. Every summer such scenes play out in cities across the United States, and as Sam Bloch argues, we ignore the benefits of shade at our own peril. Heatwaves are now the country’s deadliest natural disasters with victims concentrated in poorer, less shady areas. Public health, mental health, and crime statistics are worse in neighborhoods without it. For some, finding shade is a matter of life and death.
Shade was once a staple of human civilization. In Mesopotamia and Northern Africa, cities were built densely so that courtyards and public passageways were in shadow in the heat of the day, with cool breezes flowing freely. The Greeks famously philosophized in shady agoras. Even today, in Spain’s sunny Seville, political careers are imperiled when leaders fail to put out the public shades that hang above sidewalks in time for summer heat.
So, what happened in the U.S.? The arrival of air conditioning and the dominance of cars took away the impetus to enshrine shade into our rapidly growing cities. Though a few heroic planners, engineers, and architects developed shady designs for efficiency and comfort, the removal of shade trees in favor of wider roads and underinvestment in public spaces created a society where citizens retreat to their own cooled spaces, if they can—increasingly taxing the energy grid—or face dangerous heat outdoors.
Shade examines the key role that shade plays not only in protecting human health and enhancing urban life, but also looks toward the ways that innovative architects, city leaders, and climate entrepreneurs are looking to revive it to protect vulnerable people—and maybe even save the planet. Ambitious and far-reaching, Shade helps us see a crucially important subject in a new light.
Sam Bloch is an environmental journalist. Previously, a staff writer at The Counter, he has written for L.A. Weekly, Places Journal, Slate, The New York Times, CityLab, and Landscape Architecture Magazine, among others. Bloch is a graduate of the Columbia Journalism School, and a former MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellow and Emerson Collective Fellow. He is based in New York City.
Nithya Raman (RAH-men) is an urban planner, a mother of two, an immigrant to America, and a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing District 4. She ran for City Council in 2020 and won a historic victory, becoming the first Asian American woman and the first South Asian ever to serve on the City Council. In March 2024, she was decisively elected to a second term. Since taking office, Councilmember Raman has prioritized delivering people-centered and effective services for people experiencing homelessness, building more affordable housing, and moving with greater urgency to meet our city’s climate goals.
She serves as Chair of the Housing and Homelessness Committee, Vice Chair of the Rules, Elections, and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, and member of the Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee, Energy and Environment Committee, and the newly formed Ad Hoc Committee on Unarmed Crisis Prevention, Intervention, and Community Services. Councilmember Raman also represents Los Angeles on the Governing Board of the South Coast Air Quality Management District and serves on the Board of the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA). In 2024, she was nominated by Mayor Karen Bass to serve as Vice Chair on the LA County Executive Committee for Regional Homeless Alignment.

Jorge Perez, with Heather McDonald, & The Shut the Fuck Up Method at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Jorge Perez, in conversation with Heather McDonald, will discussThe Shut the Fuck Up Method.
In The Shut the Fuck Up Method, the author weaves a powerful narrative around the transformative power of silence and non-complaint in personal growth and stress management. Rooted deeply in personal loss and epigenetic studies, the book explores how our spoken words and internal dialogues shape our reality and stress levels, impacting our genetic predispositions.
Throughout the book, the author intertwines personal anecdotes with practical advice, showcasing how quitting the habit of complaining can lead to a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Each chapter delves into different aspects of life where silence can be golden, from overcoming grief and transforming personal tragedies into sources of strength, to managing everyday annoyances and challenges with grace.
The Shut the Fuck Up Method is not just about remaining silent; it’s about consciously choosing words that empower and uplift, turning inward to meditation and mindfulness to reprogram our responses to life’s challenges. This book offers a roadmap to anyone seeking to reduce stress, enhance inner peace, and live a more connected, intentional life. By embracing the silence and the wisdom it brings, readers are guided to a state where they can genuinely thrive, attracting more positivity and manifesting their desires through the power of non-resistance and non-complaint.

Pond Water Society Presents: Poets in Distress – In-Person Event
Pond Water Society Presents: Poets in Distress, music, food, the best distraction!
For 15 years the Poets in Distress have owned August at PondWater. There’s a reason for that. It’s a constantly evolving thing and always stupendous.
This will be the first year without King Daddy, but we are going to persevere and I’m quite sure that PID will kick poetry ass in his honor.
As usual, it’s a free event, but a $10.00 donation is appreciated for dinner, wine, baked goods, and such.
I wouldn’t bring kids to this one. Let’s celebrate being adults!
Joanne Qualey Baines hosts this event.

Date: Saturday, the 2nd
Time: 5 pm

Poetry Book Launch: Nicelle Davis, with 10 Guests, & Penguin Noir at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event
Join us for the launch of Penguin Noir, a novel-in-verse by Nicelle Davis!
To celebrate the launch, ten poets will slip into character, channeling voices beyond their own. Each will read two persona poems, exploring the world through borrowed masks, imagined selves, and shadowy alter egos.
Featured readers include: Kathleen Florence, Rich Ferguson, Armine Iknadossian, Zachary Jensen, Victoria McCoy, Hanna Pachman, Jeremy Ra, Jose Rios, Aruni Wijesinghe, and Nancy Woo.
Penguin Noir offers “a view of life under a man-made ego-system,” The Sea of Wonders, in which poet Nicelle Davis queries the implications of preserving (penguin) lives when the world that would support them is becoming unlivable and our relationship to them increasingly mediated (“So many images of nature, we struggle ever to make it outside”). Wry, yearning, exasperated, this play-in-verse with bold paintings by artist Cheryl Gross and dramatic monologues of individual Emperor, Gentoo, and other penguins dares us to look penguins (and, by extension, the world) in the eye and ‘fess up to the mess we’ve made. Sharp, eviscerating wit will keep you rubbernecking the spectacle Davis walks us through.
Nicelle Davis is a California poet, collaborator, and performance artist. Her poetry collections include The Language of Fractions (Moon Tide Press 2023), The Walled Wife (Red Hen Press, 2016), In the Circus of You (Rose Metal Press, 2015), Becoming Judas (Red Hen Press, 2013), and Circe (Lowbrow Press, 2011). Penguin Noir recently won the Changing Light Novel in Verse Prize from Livingston Press and will be released Summer of 2025. Her poetry film collaborations with Cheryl Gross have been shown across the world. She has taught poetry at Youth for Positive Change, an organization that promotes success for youth in secondary schools, MHA, Volunteers of America in their Homeless Youth Center, Red Hen’s WITS program, and with MEP. She currently teaches Middle School in the High Desert.

Book Release: Mads Gabbo and Miles Klee & Double Black Daimond at Stories Books & Café – In-Person Event
Mads Gabbo and Miles Klee will present and discuss Double Black Diamond.
It’s our turn in the wilderness. The future is fucked and it is already here. Feral children stage raids on villas in the foothills. Poison Ivy prowls the suburbs for boys to inject. An ether-huffing doctor is dispatched south to help contain a strange epidemic. With murder legalized, teens compete to lose their victim cards. A mysterious stench terrorizes the residents of North Hadely, Indiana. Things might seem hopeless, but as society breaks down, new forms emerge, glowing green with mutant ingenuity. Double Black Diamond incubates nineteen such freaks, creatures evolved to scavenge the wastelands. From prehistoric jungles to radioactive waters, from the haunted ruins of the old country to the glittering horrors of the new, these stories run wild, feasting on the spoils.
Mads Gobbo is a writer and illustrator from Los Angeles. Mads runs Hand Follows Eye Studios, a mobile arts education business with a queer and feminist focus.
