Evening Book Club: Hello Beautiful at Manhattan Beach Library, LACL – In-Person Event
Patrons can enjoy a facilitated discussion of fiction and nonfiction titles. A limited amount of titles are available for attendees at the library. For adults.
May Selection: Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. But then darkness from William’s past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters’ unshakeable devotion to one another. An exquisite homage to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic, Little Women, Hello Beautiful is a profoundly moving portrait of what is possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are, but because of it.

YA for Adults Book Club: Wrath and the Dawn #1 at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event
Cella Door welcomes participants to discuss Wrath and the Dawn #1 by Renée Ahdieh.
Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So, it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch…she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.
She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.
Renée Ahdieh is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her spare time, she likes to dance salsa and collect shoes. She is passionate about all kinds of curry, rescue dogs, and college basketball. The first few years of her life were spent in a high-rise in South Korea; consequently, Renée enjoys having her head in the clouds. Wrath of the Dawn is her debut.

Andrew Porter, with Jonathan Blum and Holiday Reinhorn, & The Imagined Life at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Andrew Porter, in conversation with Jonathan Blum and Holiday Reinhorn, will discuss and sign The Imagined Life.
From the award-winning, internationally acclaimed writer, a taut, elegiac novel about a man trying to uncover the truth about the father who left him behind.
Steven Mills has reached a crossroads. His wife and son have left, and they may not return. Which leaves him determined to find out what happened to his own father, a brilliant, charismatic professor who disappeared in 1984 when Steve was twelve, on a wave of ignominy.
As Steve drives up the coast of California, seeking out his father’s friends, family members, and former colleagues, the novel offers us tantalizing glimpses into Steve’s childhood—his parents’ legendary pool parties, the black-and-white films on the backyard projector, secrets shared with his closest friend. Each conversation in the present reveals another layer of his father’s past, another insight into his disappearance. Yet with every revelation, his father becomes more difficult to recognize. And, with every insight, Steve must confront truths about his own life.
Andrew Porter is the author of the story collections The Disappeared and The Theory of Light and Matter and the novel In Between Days. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he has received a Pushcart Prize, a James Michener/Copernicus Fellowship, and the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. His work has appeared in One Story, Ploughshares, American Short Fiction, Narrative, The Southern Review, and on public radio’s Selected Shorts. Currently, he teaches fiction writing and directs the creative writing program at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX.

At Skylight: Christina Li & The Manner of Dreams at Skylight – In-Person Event
Christina Li will discuss and sign The Manner of Dreams.
Christina Li’s haunting novel The Manner of Dreams, is about the secrets that lie in wait in the crumbling mansion of a former Hollywood starlet, and the intertwined fates of the two Chinese American families fighting to inherit it.
Vivian Yin is dead. The first Chinese actress to win an Oscar, the trailblazing ingénue rose to fame in the eighties, only to disappear from the spotlight at the height of her career to live out the rest of her life as a recluse.
Now her remaining family members are gathered for the reading of her will, and her daughters expect to inherit their childhood home: Vivian’s grand, sprawling, Southern California garden estate. But due to a last-minute change to the will, the house is passed on to another family instead—one that has suddenly returned after decades of estrangement.
Told in dual timelines, spanning three generations, and brimming with romance, betrayal, ambition, and sacrifice, The Manor of Dreams is a thrilling family gothic that examines the true cost of the American Dream—and what happens when the roots we set down in this country turn to rot.
Christina Li is the award-winning author of children’s and young adult books Clues to the Universe, Ruby Lost and Found, and True Love and Other Impossible Odds, which have been selected as a Washington Post summer book club pick, one of the NPR and New York Public Library Best Books of the Year, and recognized for the Asian Pacific American Librarians’ Award for Best Children’s Literature. She graduated from Stanford University with degrees in Economics and Public Policy. She grew up in the Midwest and California but now resides in New York. The Manor of Dreams is her adult literary debut.

Chris Santiago and Cathy Linh Present Their Books: Small Wars Manual: Poems and Becoming Ghost: Poetry, respectively, at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Chris Santiago will read and discuss Small Wars Manual, a far-reaching collection of erasures and original poems examining the long shadow of American militarism and imperialism.
Stemming in part from a disturbingly mundane military document of the same name, Small Wars Manual is a how-to for imperialism that critically dismantles itself with each passing line, “a pidgin // containing elements // of animus and // insubordination.” In its wake, the very boundaries of oppression and resistance, art and justice, and power and truth exploded.
Cathy Linh will read and discuss Becoming Ghost, the long-awaited sophomore poetry collection on familial estrangement, the Vietnam War, and Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.
The follow-up to her acclaimed poetry debut Split, Becoming Ghost documents Cathy Linh Che’s parents’ experiences as refugees who escaped the Vietnam War and then were cast as extras in Francis Ford Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now, placing them at the margins of their own story. The poetry collection uses persona, speculation, and the golden shovel form as a means of moving Vietnamese voices from the periphery to the center. The speaker’s disownment raises questions about the challenges of using parents as poetic subjects, telling familial stories to a broader public, and the meaning of forgiveness.

John Mason, in conversation with Elliot Mintz, will discuss and sign Smile: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of Brian Wilson.
The story of Brian Wilson’s legendary SMiLE album from Beach Boys authority David Leaf. The story of SMiLE is a story without precedent, appropriate for music that was and remains groundbreaking.

With over two dozen new interviews as well as generous excerpts from his extended 2004 interviews with Brian Wilson and SMiLE collaborator Van Dyke Parks, the book tells the story of SMiLE by those who were there in 1966 and from the participants in its 2004 resurrection, including all the members of Brian Wilson’s band. Sarah Manguso, with Lisa Locascio Nighthawk, & Questions Without Answers at Diesel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event
Sarah Manguso, in conversation with Lisa Locascio Nighthawk, will discuss Questions Without Answers.
When Sarah Manguso opened a Twitter account and posted this single (and only) tweet, she immediately received hundreds of answers. Many, she discovered, were intelligent, intuitive, inventive, and philosophical. For Manguso, these responses seemed to form a “choral philosophy” that she believes disappears from most people’s lives in kindergarten. As she says in her illuminating foreword, “These questions are cute by the word’s original definition, swift and piercing. They cut to the quick.”
Gathering more than one hundred of the best questions from this poll and bringing them brilliantly to life with illustrations by New Yorker cartoonist Liana Finck, Questions Without Answers ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime—encompassing birth, death, poop, dinosaurs, and everything in between—to show us the wit and wisdom of little people in all their wondrous glory.
Sarah Manguso is the author of nine books, most recently the novels Liars and Very Cold People. Her other books include a story collection, two poetry collections, and several acclaimed works of nonfiction. Her work has been recognized by an American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Hodder Fellowship, and the Rome Prize. She lives in Los Angeles. http://www.sarahmanguso.com
Lisa Locascio Nighthawk is the chair of the Antioch MFA in Creative Writing and the executive director of the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference. Her novel Open Me was published by Grove Atlantic in 2018. She writes a newsletter called Not Knowing How. https://lisalocascio.com/

Memoir Launch: Abby Reyes & Truth Demands at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event
Join us at Village Well Books & Coffee for a book launch celebrating the release of Truth Demands by Abby Reyes.
Abby will trace the personal and political aftermath of the 1999 murders of three land rights advocates—her partner Angeleno Terence Freitas among them–near Indigenous U’wa territory in Colombia, where oil pipelines are a magnet for armed violence. She will share the sweeping saga as it moved from the cloudforests of Colombia to the streets of Los Angeles to the highest human rights tribunals in the Americas.
More than the politics, Abby will share her parallel journey as she navigated the waters of grief and loss. She will invite us into conversation about what it takes to keep showing up for justice and for our collective future even when the waters remain turbulent.
Joining Abby is journalist Emily Beyda, a family friend of Terence Freitas.
This evening is the sole Los Angeles book launch event for Truth Demands. We are honored to host Abby and invite you to join us in welcoming the Los Angeles friends and family of Terence Freitas together with others who have stood alongside Pueblo U’wa from the early days of street protest here in LA all the way to their most recent victory at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Down a quiet backstreet in Kyoto exists a very special restaurant. Run by Koishi Kamogawa and her father Nagare, the Kamogawa Diner serves up deliciously extravagant meals. But that’s not the main reason customers stop by.
The father-daughter duo are ‘food detectives’. Through ingenious investigations, they are able to recreate dishes from a person’s treasured memories – dishes that may well hold the keys to their forgotten past and future happiness. Ticketed Event: Miranda July, with Isabelle Albuquerque, & All Fours (paperback release) at Book Soup Off-site at Frist Congregational Church – In-Person Event
Miranda July, in conversation with Isabelle Aluquerque, will discuss and sign All Fours.
The New York Times bestselling author returns with an irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious and surprising novel about a woman upending her life.
A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, checks into a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in an entirely different journey.
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

Mariah Blake, with Rosanna Xia, & They Poisoned the World: Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Mariah Blake, in conversation with Rosanna Xia, will discuss They Poisoned the World: Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals.
A landmark investigation of the chemical industry’s decades-long campaign to hide the dangers of forever chemicals, told through the story of a small town on the frontlines of an epic public health crisis.
In 2014, after losing several friends and relatives to cancer, an unassuming insurance underwriter in Hoosick Falls, New York, began to suspect that the local water supply was polluted. When he tested his tap water, he discovered dangerous levels of forever chemicals. This set off a chain of events that led to 100 million Americans learning their drinking water was tainted. Although the discovery came as a shock to most, the U.S. government and the manufacturers of these toxic chemicals—used in everything from lipstick and cookware to children’s clothing—had known about their hazards for decades.
In They Poisoned the World, investigative journalist Mariah Blake tells the astonishing story of this cover-up, tracing its roots back to the Manhattan Project and through the postwar years, as industry scientists discovered that these chemicals refused to break down and were saturating the blood of virtually every human being. By the 1980s, manufacturers were secretly testing their workers and finding links to birth defects, cancer, and other serious diseases. At every step, the industry’s deceptions were aided by our government’s appallingly lax regulatory system—a system that has made us all guinea pigs in a vast, uncontrolled chemistry experiment.
Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting and tens of thousands of documents, Blake interweaves the secret history of forever chemicals with the moving story of how a lone village took on the chemical giants—and won. From the beloved local doctor to the young mother who took her fight all the way to the nation’s capital, citizen activists in Hoosick Falls and beyond have ignited the most powerful grassroots environmental movement since Silent Spring.
Humane and revelatory, this book will provoke outrage—and hopefully inspire the change we need to protect the health of every American for generations to come.
Mariah Blake is an investigative journalist whose writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Mother Jones, The New Republic, and other publications. She was a Murrey Marder Nieman Fellow in Watchdog Journalism at Harvard University.

Mystery Book Club: Norwegian by Night at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event
Cella Door welcomes participants to discuss Norwegian by Night (A Sheldon Horowitz Novel #2) by author Derek B. Miller.
Sheldon Horowitz—widowed, impatient, impertinent—has grudgingly agreed to leave New York and move in with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her new husband, Lars, in Norway—a country of blue and ice with one thousand Jews, not one of them a former Marine sniper in the Korean War turned watch repairman. Not until now, anyway.
Home alone one morning, Sheldon witnesses a dispute between the woman who lives upstairs and an aggressive stranger. When events turn dire, Sheldon seizes and shields the neighbor’s young son from the violence, and they flee the scene. As Sheldon and the boy look for a safe haven in an alien world, past and present weave together, forcing them ever forward to a wrenching moment of truth.
Derek B. Miller is an American novelist, who worked in international affairs before turning to writing full-time. He is the author of five previous novels, all highly acclaimed: Norwegian by Night, The Girl in Green, American by Day, Radio Life and Quiet Time (an Audible Original). His work has been shortlisted for many awards, with Norwegian by Night winning the CWA John Creasey Dagger Award for best first crime novel, an eDunnit Award and the Goldsboro Last Laugh Award. Special Event: Ashley Brown on the Legacy of Althea Gibson: Serving Herself at Chevalier’s – In-Person Event
A Collaborative Event with the Los Angeles Tennis Club!
Join us for a very special evening featuring a talk with Ashley Brown, author of Serving Herself: The Life and Times of Althea Gibson.
In her groundbreaking work, Brown explores the life and legacy of Althea Gibson (1927–2003), the first African American tennis player to win titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals (1957–1958). Gibson also became the first African American woman to compete on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour in 1963. Despite facing systemic racism and gender discrimination, Gibson broke barriers in sports, challenged societal norms, and redefined possibilities for future generations.
Drawing on an extensive array of primary sources—including oral histories, correspondence, and thousands of newspaper and magazine articles—Brown situates Gibson’s story within the broader contexts of American culture, social movements, and the intersection of race, class, gender, and sports.
The event is free to attend, but RSVPs are highly encouraged because space is limited.

Book Soup & One Institute Present: Caro De Robertis, in conversation with Alex Espinoza & So Many Stars: An Oral History of Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer, and Two-Spirit People of Color at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Caro De Robertis, in conversation with Alex Espinoza will discussSo Many Stars: An Oral History of Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer, and Two-Spirit People of Color.
From the acclaimed novelist, a first-of-its-kind, deeply personal, and moving oral history of a generation of trans and gender nonconforming elders of color—from leading activists to artists to ordinary citizens—who tell their own stories of breathtaking courage, cultural innovations, and acts of resistance.
So Many Stars knits together the voices of trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, and two-spirit elders of color as they share authentic, intimate accounts of how they created space for themselves and their communities in the world. This singular project collects the testimonies of twenty elders, each a glimmering thread in a luminous tapestry, preserving their words for future generations—who can more fully exist in the world today because of these very trailblazers.
The anecdotes in these pages are riveting, joyful, heartbreaking, full of personality and wisdom, and artfully woven together into one immersive narrative. In De Robertis’s words, So Many Stars shares “behind-the-scenes tales of what it meant—and still means—to create an authentic life, against the odds.”

Ticketed: Jonathan Kirsch, with Sam Sanders, & The Mind Is Burning at North Figueroa Bookshop – In-Person Event
Jonatha Hirsch, in conversation with Sam Sanders, will discussThe Mind Is Burning: Losing My Father to a Cult and Dementia.
On April 9th, 2019, Jonathan got the dreaded call: his father Thomas had been rushed to the ER. He’d known for a while that Thomas’s health was in decline, but at this pivotal moment, he had no choice but to step into the role of caretaker—a role Thomas himself was never able to grasp.
In The Mind is Burning, Jonathan recounts the stranger-than-fiction true story of the Hirsch family. Thomas was a Hungarian refugee turned spiritual seeker, and Jonathan was along for the ride as his parents chased the high of enlightenment, vacillating between following their doctrine to earn affection and finding his own voice. Thomas’s quest eventually led them to Franklin Jones: known as either a charismatic, eccentric guru or a cult leader and sexual predator, depending on whether you were inside or outside his orbit.
Jonathan left home the day he turned eighteen, but almost twenty years later, he was pulled back into the chaotic fold when, just as he approached the biggest milestone of his career, Thomas was diagnosed with dementia. He became one of millions of Americans in the “sandwich generation”: middle-aged adults simultaneously responsible for young children and aging parents. For Jonathan especially, that duty of care was fraught with emotional landmines, every impossible hardship of the present dredging up painful memories from the past—memories that were slipping away from Thomas day by day.
This poetic yet propulsive memoir was created for the listening experience, and poses the question: What do we owe each other as family?

At Skylight: Jennifer Hope Choi, with Aja Gabel, & The Wanderer’s Curse at Skylight – In-Person Event
Jennifer Hope Choi, in conversation with Aja Gabel, will discuss The Wanderer’s Curse.
A Korean mother runs off to Alaska, sparking a greater season of wandering. Could her daughter be destined for the same?
When Jennifer Hope Choi first stumbled upon the “curse” known as yeokmasal—an allegedly inheritable affliction causing one to roam farther and farther from home—she immediately consulted her mother. “Oh yeah,” Umma quipped. “I have that.” Technically this wasn’t a revelation. Since 2007, the no-nonsense open-heart surgery nurse had moved suddenly from the Golden State to the Last Frontier, shuttling over the next decade through seven states.
This probing memoir follows Choi through her many former homes, from a crumbling Chinatown tenement to a haunted museum in Georgia. Connections emerge, between her curious trajectory and idiosyncratic Korean identity narratives: a mystical Korean dog breed, pro golfers, modern Korean cults, the four pillars of destiny, and Korean American art. One question lingers throughout her search: What might be gained from living in residence with uncertainty?
The Wanderer’s Curse is an electric mother-daughter story, exploring ideas of belonging, self-determination, and possibility, leaving readers to wonder what we take with us generation to generation, what we wish we could leave behind, and how we move on.
Jennifer Hope Choi is a National Magazine Award–nominated editor at Bon Appétit. Her writing has been anthologized in The Best American Travel Writing and has appeared in the New York Times, Guernica, Lucky Peach, VQR, BuzzFeed, and the American Scholar.
Aja Gabel is the author of The Ensemble, and her novel Lightbreakers will be released in November, both from Riverhead Books. Her prose can be found in The Cut, LA Times, Buzzfeed, BOMB, and elsewhere. She studied writing at Wesleyan University and the University of Virginia and has a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. She currently lives and writes in Los Angeles.

Book Release: I Feel Famous, with Angela Jaeger and Adele Bertei at Stories Books & Café – In-Person Event
I Feel Famous: Punk Diaries 1977-1981 is a girl’s coming of age story set to the pulse of punk rock. The book tracks 17-year-old Angela Jaeger’s exciting discovery of punk music and its accompanying lifestyle in 1977. A music enthusiast living in New York’s East Village, Angela’s story unfolds chronologically, charting her late adolescence in tandem with her transition from observer of the nascent punk scene to eager participant. Gradually becoming a nightly fixture of her neighborhood’s vibrant underground rock milieu at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, by 1978 she had continued to fulfill her punk fantasy abroad. She followed the Clash on a tour across England, finally returning home in 1979 to start her own band. Angela encountered an impressive cast of characters on her adventures, including Lydia Lunch, Joe Strummer, Billy Idol, Klaus Nomi, and Sid Vicious.
Angela Jaeger is a singer, writer, and teacher who founded the late 1970s obscure No Wave band the Stare Kits and has recorded with The Bush Tetras, Pigbag, David Cunningham, and The Monochrome Set, amongst others.
Adele Bertei began playing music in Cleveland with Pere Ubu’s legendary Peter Laughner, and as an original member of the Contortions, produced by Brian Eno on No New York. She was the pioneering creator of The Bloods—the first out, queer, all-women-rock band. She is the author of two previous books: Peter and the Wolves (a memoir) and Why Labelle Matters, a finalist for the 2022 Lambda Literary Awards. Twist: Tales of a Queer Girlhood is her origin story.

Radha Vatsal, with Naomi Hirahara, & No. 10 Doyers Street, at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Radha Vatsal, in conversation with Naomi Hirahara, will discussNo. 10 Doyers Street.
Archana Morley knows what it’s like to be an outsider. As a woman journalist from India making her way through the cutthroat world of tabloid newspapers, she’s always on the lookout for untold stories.
In the aftermath of a bloody shooting in Chinatown, Archana finds her most challenging subject-the dreaded gangster Mock Duck. But she realizes that things are not as they seem when the mayor declares Chinatown must be demolished, and the authorities raid Mock’s home and tear apart his family. She embarks on a quest for the truth that leads her from gritty alleys to the back-room politics of City Hall and beyond.
Inspired by real events, No. 10 Doyers Street is a gripping novel of New York City on the cusp of modernity, as seen through a unique immigrant perspective.

Poetry Workshop Where Do Poems Come From? (Week 3 of 3) at West Hollywood Library, LACL – In-Person Event
Join us for a poetry workshop with former City of West Hollywood Poet Laureate Kim Dower. For adults.
Often the “Muse” comes from the quotidian aspects of everyday living: watering our plants, a faded sign we see on the street, browsing the fruit aisle, a Polaroid that catches our eye, a conversation we overhear. But many times, a poem is born from deep emotions—memories of our past, a special wedding, falling in love or suffering through a difficult breakup, death of a loved one. This is also where poems come from.
Each week’s session will explore a variety of poems that deal with specific topics, such as memory, love, grief, and humor. We will explore how poets deal differently with similar subjects—how some sad topics and events can be written about in a humorous way. Reading other people’s poems will provide students with ideas and prompts for their own work. This fun, inspiring, and provocative examination of poems that deal with the core topics of Poetry and Memory, Poetry and Humor, Poetry and Grief, Poetry and Love will be used as prompts for student’s automatic writing which they will share in class. Through positive, constructive, nonjudgmental feedback offered in a cozy and creative environment, each student will receive encouragement and unique recognition and will go home with work they can develop into poems. Sponsored by the Friends of the West Hollywood Library.
Attendance is limited, and advance registration is required. This will be used to save your spot in the program. We cannot guarantee availability for any unregistered attendees. This is the second of a three-program series that will be held on May 3, 10, and 17. Each program date has its own event page. Please register individually for all of the dates you would like to attend.

Kids Book Club: Once There Was at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Kids Event
Once was, once wasn’t.
So began the stories Marjan’s father told her as a little girl—fables like the story of the girl who sprung a unicorn from a hunter’s snare, or the nomad boy who rescued a baby shirdal. Tales of mythical beasts that filled her with curiosity and wonder.
But Marjan’s not a little girl anymore. In the wake of her father’s sudden death, she is trying to hold it all together: her schoolwork, friendships, and keeping her dad’s shoestring veterinary practice from going under. Then, one day, she receives a visitor who reveals something stunning: Marjan’s father was no ordinary veterinarian. The creatures out of the stories he told her were real—and he traveled the world to care for them. And now that he’s gone, she must take his place.
Marjan steps into a secret world hidden in plain sight, where magical creatures are bought and sold, treasured and trapped. She finds friends she never knew she needed—a charming British boy who grew up with a griffon, a runaway witch seeking magic and home—while trying to hide her double life from her old friends and classmates.
The deeper Marjan gets into treating these animals, the closer she comes to finding who killed her father—and to a shocking truth that will reawaken her sense of wonder and put humans and beasts in the gravest of danger.

Storytime: Jessica McKay, & Eden’s Light at Chevalier’s – In-Person Event
Jessica McKay will present her debut children’s book Eden’s Light.
Like her favorite superheroes, Eden always knew how to save the day.
That is, until one night, she sees something troubling on the television: the story of a Black man who was unjustly treated and hurt by the police. For the first time, Eden feels scared, and she’s not exactly sure how to explain it. She does know one thing for sure: the dark seems much scarier now than it did before.
Eden’s parents try their best to explain that she is protected and safe, but none of the things that usually soothe her work. It’s only when her mother reminds Eden that people can never take away her inner light that Eden understands her most powerful tool to fight the dark.

An innovative, invitational slam. Eight poets all across the United States. A 21+event produced by Lourdes Gan and Christian Perfas.
Fashion has a price tag not everyone can afford. However, style is available to all of us, the expression that we all can own for ourselves. With this event, we aim to celebrate style within the world of spoken word by inviting specific artists whose work and presence clearly speak towards this principle. In addition, we want to challenge the medium of slam and what it can entail, using different criteria than your average competition.
Eight poets, 3 rounds, 1 champion. Food, cocktails and clothing sold with a fashion show and slam.
