Nancy Kricorian, with Talar Chahinian, & The Burning Heart of the World at Deisel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event

The Burning Heart of the World tells the epic story of an Armenian family’s experience of war and exile, from the mountains of Cilicia and the streets of Beirut to contemporary New York City. Returning to the fabular tone of Zabelle, her popular first novel, Kricorian conjures up the lost worlds and intergenerational traumas that haunt a family in permanent exile. Leavened with humor and imbued with the timelessness of a folktale, this gorgeous novel offers rich historical knowledge and cultural insights that inform her characters making them jump off the page and into our hearts and minds.

Nancy Kricorian, who was born and raised in the Armenian community of Watertown, Massachusetts, is the author of four novels about post-genocide Armenian diaspora experience, including Zabelle, which was translated into seven languages, was adapted as a play, and has been continuously in print since 1998. Her essays and poems have appeared in The Los Angeles Review of Books Quarterly, Guernica, Parnassus, Minnesota Review, The Mississippi Review, and other journals. She has taught at Barnard, Columbia, Yale, and New York University, as well as for Teacher & Writers Collaborative in the New York City Public Schools and for the Palestine Writing Workshop in Birzeit.

Talar Chahinian holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UCLA and lectures in the Program for Armenian Studies at UC Irvine, where she is also Visiting Faculty in the Department of Comparative Literature. She has served as assistant editor of the Armenian Review (2010-2017) and is currently co-editor of Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies.

Ron Currie, with Ivy Pochoda, & The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne at Vroman’s – In-Person Event

Ron Currie, in conversation with Ivy Pochoda, will discuss The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne.

When crime matriarch Babs Dionne’s youngest daughter is found dead, she will stop at nothing to uncover the truth—or get her revenge.

Your ancestors breathe through you. Sometimes, they call for vengeance.

Babs Dionne, proud Franco-American, doting grandmother, and vicious crime matriarch, rules her small town of Waterville, Maine, with an iron fist. She controls the flow of drugs into Little Canada with the help of her loyal lieutenants, girlfriends since they were teenagers, and her eldest daughter, Lori, a Marine vet struggling with addiction.

When a drug kingpin discovers that his numbers are down in the upper northeast, he sends a malevolent force, known only as The Man, to investigate. At the same time, Babs’s youngest daughter, Sis, has gone missing, which doesn’t seem at all like a coincidence. In twenty-four hours, Sis will be found dead, and the whole town will seek shelter from Babs’s wrath.

The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne is a gripping, propulsive, darkly funny thriller, with a ferocious matriarch at its bruised, beating heart. Award-winning author Ron Currie delivers an unforgettable crime saga about love, duty, and vengeance.

Ron Currie is the award-winning author of five novels. He has won the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award, the Addison M. Metcalf Award, the Alex Award, and the Pushcart Prize. His books have been translated into fifteen languages, and his short fiction and nonfiction have received recognition in Best American anthologies. As a screenwriter he worked most recently on the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations and has developed projects with AMC Studios, Amblin Television, and ITV America. He lives in Portland, Maine, and teaches in the University of Southern Maine Stonecoast MFA program.

Richmond, Virginia 1811. It’s the height of the winter social season, the General Assembly is in session, and many of Virginia’s gentleman planters, along with their wives and children, have made the long and arduous journey to the capital in hopes of whiling away the darkest days of the year. At the city’s only theater, the Charleston-based Placide & Green Company puts on two plays a night to meet the demand of a populace that’s done looking for enlightenment at the front of a church.

On the night after Christmas, the theater is packed with more than six hundred holiday revelers. In the third-floor boxes sits newly widowed Sally Henry Campbell, who is glad for any opportunity to relive the happy times she shared with her husband. One floor away, in the colored gallery, Cecily Patterson doesn’t give a whit about the play but is grateful for a four-hour reprieve from a life that has recently gone from bad to worse. Backstage, young stagehand Jack Gibson hopes that, if he can impress the theater’s managers, he’ll be offered a permanent job with the company. And on the other side of town, blacksmith Gilbert Hunt dreams of one day being able to bring his wife to the theater, but he’ll have to buy her freedom first.

When the theater goes up in flames in the middle of the performance, Sally, Cecily, Jack, and Gilbert make a series of split-second decisions that will not only affect their own lives but those of countless others. And in the days following the fire, as news of the disaster spreads across the United States, the paths of these four people will become forever intertwined.

Feminist Book Club: The Return of Ellie Black at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event

Participants will discuss The Return of Ellie Black: A Novel by Emiko Jean.

In this “page-turning suspense novel, shrewd character study, and captivating mystery” (Stephen King) Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s life is turned upside down when she gets the call that Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington state—but her reappearance leaves Chelsey with more questions than answers.

It’s been twenty years since Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s sister vanished when they were teenagers, and ever since she’s been searching: for signs, for closure, for other missing girls. But happy endings are rare in Chelsey’s line of work.

Then a glimmer: local teenager Ellie Black, who disappeared without a trace two years earlier, has been found alive in the woods of Washington state.

But something is not right with Ellie. She won’t say where she’s been, or who she’s protecting, and it’s up to Chelsey to find the answers. She needs to get to the bottom of what happened to Ellie: for herself, and for the memory of her sister, but mostly for the next girl who could be taken—and who, unlike Ellie, might never return.

Emiko Jean is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult and adult fiction. Her work has been translated into over thirty languages. She lives in Washington with her family.

Creativity Book Club: The Practice and What’s Behind the Blue Door at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event

Do you think of yourself as creative, or wish that you were? Do you get inspired by a book of reflections, or do you prefer an actual workbook with tasks and prompts? Do you wish you had more people to talk with about painting, poetry or pottery?

Here is the time and the place; you just need to be here with us.

About The Practice:

Creative work doesn’t come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn’t. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward.

Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer’s block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you’re a well-adjusted human. Most of all, he shows you what it takes to turn your passion from a private distraction to a productive contribution, the one you’ve been seeking to share all along.

With this book as your guide, you’ll learn to dance with your fear. To take the risks worth taking. And to embrace the empathy required to make work that contributes with authenticity and joy.

About What’s Behind the Blue Door?:

From the celebrated non-profit WriteGirl (where Amanda Gorman got her start) comes What’s Behind the Blue Door?, a creative writing journal designed to be your go-to guide for tapping into creativity and self-expression.

What’s Behind the Blue Door? features 75 galvanizing prompts, from memoir-esque questions to speculative fiction starters to poetry exercises, as well as 50 encouraging tips to bring your writing to the next level. Beautifully packaged with a handy ribbon marker and rounded edges with lay-flat binding for easy writing, and complete with full-color illustrations throughout, this guided journal will be a treasured companion for any writer, both beginner and seasoned pro alike.

Amy Gerstler and David Trinidad Present Their Books: Is This My Final Form? and New Playlist, respectively at Book Soup – In-Person Event

Amy Gerstler will present her new collection, Is This My Final From?

A poet renowned for her “wit and complexity” (Poetry Foundation) explores the endless evolution and malleability of life on earth in her most curious, inventive collection to date

Aren’t we all shape-shifters? Is any animal, vegetable, or mineral—even a commonplace object—what it seems to be at any given moment? Who isn’t juggling constant transformations, conflicting roles, changing loyalties, loves, perceptions, and selves, all while being pummeled by shifting devotions, emotions, and obsessions? Do even the dead continue to evolve in surprising ways?

Reveling in these questions, Gerstler’s latest protean poetry collection includes loose sonnets, shapely praise of Mae West, the lament of an actor who can’t shed his costume, dramatic monologues, whiffs of gender slippage, a love lyric to the bride of Frankenstein, and a ten-minute play.

Author Talk: Jodi Picoult & By Any Other Name via Virtual Event, LACL – In-Person Event

Join a virtual discussion with author Jodi Picoult of her newest novel, By Any Other Name.

In 1581, Emilia Bassano—like most young women of her day—is allowed no voice of her own. But as the Lord Chamberlain’s mistress, she has access to all theaters in England and finds a way to secretly bring her work to the stage. And yet, creating some of the world’s greatest dramatic masterpieces comes at great cost: by paying a man for the use of his name, she will write her own out of history.

In the present, playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. Although the challenges are different four hundred years later, the playing field is still not level for women in theater. Would Melina—like Emilia—be willing to forfeit her credit as author, just for a chance to see her work performed?

Told in intertwining narratives, By Any Other Name is a sweeping tale of ambition, courage, and desire that asks what price each woman is willing to pay to see their work live on—even if it means they will be forgotten. Register now to join the wondrous conversation!

Jodi Picoult is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of twenty-nine novels, including By Any Other Name, Mad Honey (co-authored with Jennifer Finney Boylan), Wish You Were Here, The Book of Two Ways, A Spark of Light, Small Great Things, Leaving Time, and My Sister’s Keeper, and, with daughter Samantha van Leer, two young adult novels, Between the Lines and Off the Page. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband.

Book Launch: Myah Ariel, with Laura Ling Brown, & No Ordinary Love at Reparations Club – In-Person Event

Myah Ariel, in conversation with Laura Ling Brown, will discuss and sign her novel No Ordinary Love.

A PR relationship between a pop superstar and a pro-athlete bad boy turns into so much more in this swoony romance from the acclaimed author of When I Think of You.

Ella Simone’s popstar life is what dreams are made of. Her eight year marriage to renowned music producer, Elliot Majors, has helped garner the hits, awards, and adoring fans to prove it. But when Ella tires of Elliot’s many infidelities, she decides to fight for her independence despite the ironclad prenup that threatens her career. To help her case, Ella is under strict orders to stick to The Plan: no headlines, no rumors, no rocking the boat. But this strategy is thrown a curveball after an awards show wardrobe snafu and quick rescue by Miles Westbrook, MLB’s most eligible player, sends the tabloids into a frenzy. Amid tricky divorce proceedings, Ella’s magnetic connection with the charismatic pitcher might just be her downfall. Now the pressure is on to turn a scandal into an opportunity and give their teams what they want: a picture-perfect performance that will shore up both Ella and Miles’ reputations. But as the lines between reality and PR begin to blur, Ella will either stick to the choreographed life she knows so well, or surrender to a love that could set her free.

Myah Ariel is the author of debut contemporary romance WHEN I THINK OF YOU (Berkley ’24). Her early love of movies led her from Arkansas to New York City where she earned a BA in cinema studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also holds an MA in specialized journalism for the arts from USC Annenberg. For several years Myah worked across multiple roles in the film and entertainment industry before pivoting to work in academia. As a medical mom and a hopeless romantic, Myah is passionate about inclusive love stories.

Lauren Ling Brown is the best-selling author of Society of Lies (a Reese’s Book Club pick) who received a BA in English literature from Princeton University and MFA in film production with a focus in screenwriting from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where she works as a film editor.

At Skylight: Sophie Kemp, with Alissa Nutting, & Paradise Logic at Skylight – In-Person Event

Sophie Kemp, in conversation with Alissa Nutting, will discuss Paradise Logic.

A hilarious, surreal, and devastating journey into the mind of Reality Kahn, a young woman on a quest to be the greatest girlfriend of all time.

It was decreed from the moment she was born. Twenty-three-year-old Reality Kahn would embark on a quest so great, so bold. She would become the greatest girlfriend of all time. She would be a zine maker, an aspiring notary, the greatest waterslide commercial actress on the Eastern Seaboard. She would receive messages from the beyond in the form of advice from the esteemed and ancient ladies magazine, Girlfriend Weekly.

When she attends a party in Gowanus at a punk venue known as “Paradise,” Reality meets Ariel, who will become her boyfriend. She bravely works for his everlasting affection and joins a clinical trial created by Dr. Zweig Altmann to help her become a more perfect girlfriend. She stars in a new commercial. She learns how to become an indelible host. But Reality will also learn that sheer will and determination, and a very open heart, are not always enough to make true love manifest.

Sophie Frances Kemp was born in 1996 in Schenectady, New York. Her fiction and essays have appeared in Granta, The Paris Review, Vogue, GQ, Pitchfork, and The Baffler, among others. She received her MFA in fiction at Columbia University, where she now teaches in the writing program. She lives in Brooklyn.

Heart & Hand with Dr. David Yeager, Author of 10 To 25 via Virtual Program, LACL

Join LA County Librarian, Skye Patrick, for an inspiring, encouraging conversation with Dr. David Yeager, the author of 10 TO 25: The Science of Motivating Young People.

Dr. Yeager will be discussing his research into the most effective ways to communicate with and motivate the young people in your lives, be they family, friends, or coworkers.

Starting around age 10, the brain begins to crave socially rewarding experiences such as pride, admiration, and respect, and to become highly averse to social pain, such as humiliation or shame – and this carries on into their mid-twenties! Dr. Yeager’s research can teach us how to effectively tap into that craving by adopting a leadership style that’s attuned to young people’s need for status and respect – what he calls the “mentor mindset.” Young people in this age group are poised to learn, grow, and accomplish incredible things—if only we can tap into the basic neurobiological systems that drive their motivation and behavior.

Book Talk: Michael Hiltzik, with Bill Deverell, & Golden State: The Making of California at Chevalier’s – In-Person Event

Join Michael Hiltzik, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and business columnist for the Los Angeles Times, for a conversation about his latest book, Golden State: The Making Of California. Joining Hiltzik will be Bill Deverell, a historian of the 19th and 20th century American west and professor at USC.

Golden State is a definitive new history of California—from the Spanish conquistadors to the Gold Rush to the state’s meteoric rise as a tech powerhouse and bulwark of progressivism—and of its indelible mark on the United States and the world.

California has long reigned as the land of plenty, a place where the sun always shines and opportunity beckons. Even prior to its statehood in 1850, it captured the world’s imagination. We think of bearded prospectors lured by the promise of gold; we imagine its early embrace of immigrant labor during the railroad boom as prologue to its diverse social fabric today. But what lies underneath the myth is far more complicated.

Thanks to extensive research by Michael Hiltzik, one of our longstanding voices on California, Golden State uncovers the unvarnished truth about the state we think we know well. From Spanish incursions into what became known as Alta California to the rise of Big Tech, the history of California is one of stark contradictions. In rich, previously overlooked detail, we see its earliest statesmen wreak havoc among native peoples while racing to draft their own constitution even ahead of statehood. Gold-hungry settlers venture into the Sierra foothills only to leave with little, while a handful of their suppliers turn themselves into millionaire railroad magnates. Wars erupt in the name of water as Los Angeles booms, and early efforts to tame the vast landscape create a haven for fossil fuel extraction and environmental conservation alike. Hollywood politicians stoke fear, contributing to a centuries-long tradition of anti-Asian violence, and, remarkably, legal redlining and free higher education take root together.

Golden State brings a fresh critical eye to the origins of the state against which the rest of the country measures itself. From its very start, the author shows, the story of the United States was written in California.

TICKETED EVENT: David Sheff, with Tosh Berman, & Yoko: A Biography Off-site at Beverly Hills Library – In-Person Event

David Sheff, in conversation with Tosh Berman, will discuss Yoko: A Biography.

An intimate and revelatory biography of Yoko Ono from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Boy.

John Lennon once described Yoko Ono as the world’s most famous unknown artist. “Everybody knows her name, but no one knows what she does.” She has only been important to history insofar as she impacted Lennon. Throughout her life, Yoko has been a caricature, curiosity, and, often, a villain—an inscrutable seductress, manipulating con artist, and caterwauling fraud. The Lennon/Beatles saga is one of the greatest stories ever told, but Yoko’s part has been missing—hidden in the Beatles’ formidable shadow, further obscured by flagrant misogyny and racism. This definitive biography of Yoko Ono’s life will change that. In this book, Yoko Ono takes centerstage.

Yoko’s life, independent of Lennon, was an amazing journey. Yoko spans from her birth to wealthy parents in pre-war Tokyo, her harrowing experience as a child during the war, her arrival in avant-garde art scene in London, Tokyo, and New York City. It delves into her groundbreaking art, music, feminism, and activism. We see how she coped under the most intense, relentless, and cynical microscope as she was falsely vilified for the most heinous cultural crime imaginable: breaking up the greatest rock-and-roll band in history.

This book was nearly a half-century in the making. In 1980, David Sheff met Yoko and John when Sheff conducted an in-depth interview with them just months before John’s murder. In the aftermath of the killing, he and Yoko became close as she rebuilt her life, survived threats and betrayals, and went on to create groundbreaking art and music while campaigning for peace and other causes. Drawing from his experiences and interviews with her, her family, closest friends, collaborators, and many others, Sheff shows us Yoko’s nine decades—one of the most unlikely and remarkable lives ever lived.

Yoko is a harrowing, moving, propulsive, and vastly entertaining biography of a woman whose story has never been accurately told. The book not only rehabilitates Yoko Ono’s reputation but elevates it to iconic status.

At Skylight: Carolyn Huynh, with Liza Palmer, & The Family Recipe: A Novel at Skylight – In-Person Event

Carolyn Huynh, in conversation with Liza Palmer, will discuss The Family Recipe: A Novel.

This is a stunning family dramedy about estranged siblings competing to inherit their father’s Vietnamese sandwich franchise and unravel family mysteries.

Duc Tran, the eccentric founder of the Vietnamese sandwich chain Duc’s Sandwiches, has decided to retire. No one has heard from his wife, Evelyn, in two decades. She abandoned the family without a trace, and clearly doesn’t want anything to do with Duc, the business, or their kids. But the money has to go to someone. With the help of the shady family lawyer, Duc informs his five estranged adult children that to receive their inheritance, his four daughters must revitalize run-down shops in old-school Little Saigon locations across America: Houston, San Jose, New Orleans, and Philadelphia—within a year. But if the first-born (and only) son, Jude, gets married first, everything will go to him.

Each daughter is stuck in a new city, battling gentrification, declining ethnic enclaves, and messy love lives, while struggling to modernize their father’s American dream. Jude wonders if he wants to marry for love or for money—or neither. As Duc’s children scramble to win their inheritance, they begin to learn the real intention behind the inheritance scheme—and the secret their mother kept tucked away in the old fishing tackle box, all along.

The Family Recipe is about rediscovering one’s roots, different types of fatherly love, legacy, and finding a place in a divided country where the only commonality among your neighbors is the universal love of sandwiches.

Carolyn Huynh loves writing about messy Asian women who never learn from their mistakes. Her debut book, The Fortunes of Jaded Women was a Good Morning America book club pick and is being adapted for television by Heyday Studios and Universal. Her sophomore book, The Family Recipe, comes out in 2025. When she’s not writing, Carolyn daydreams about having iced coffee on a rooftop in Ho Chi Minh City.

Two-time Emmy nominated, internationally best-selling tea enthusiast who gets to write for Marvel sometimes, Liza Palmer lives in Los Angeles where 95.3% of people call her Lisa. Her tenth novel, Young Fools, will be out Fall, 2025.

Ticketed Event: Patty Callahan Henry, with Julia Whelan, & The Story She Left Behind at Vroman’s – In-Person Event

Inspired by a true literary mystery, New York Times bestselling author of the mesmerizing The Secret Book of Flora Lea returns with the sweeping story of a legendary book, a lost mother, and a daughter’s search for them both.

In 1927, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother, renowned author, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother.

By 1952, Clara is an illustrator raising her own daughter, Wynnie. When a stranger named Charlie Jameson contacts her from London claiming to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical. Compelled by the tragedy of her mother’s vanishing, she crosses the Atlantic with Wynnie only to arrive during one of London’s most deadly natural disasters—the Great Smog. With asthmatic Wynnie in peril, they escape the city with Charlie and find refuge in the Jameson’s family retreat nestled in the Lake District. It is there that Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind.

The Story She Left Behind is a captivating novel of mystery and family legacy that captures the profound longing for a mother and the evergreen allure of secrets.

Kids Graphic Novel Book Club: Haru, Book 1: Spring at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Kids Event

Participants will discuss: Haru, Book 1: Spring by author Joe Latham.

Haru, a small bird who dreams of flying, and their best friend Yama, a talkative boar, are used to being in the shadows. But when Yama finds a strange artifact that causes sinister effects, the two are swept into an epic journey to destroy the artifact and save the world.

In The Valley, best friends Haru and Yama both dream of leaving as they’re bullied at school, frustrated at home, and struggling to figure out who they are. One day, a powerful artifact connects itself to Yama, and they discover that they’ll have to journey to The Beacon in search of answers.

Created by artist Joe Latham, this beautifully illustrated graphic novel series is a coming-of-age tale that spans the changing of seasons. Beginning in spring and ending in spring—the cycle complete. A story of heart, growing up, and the sacrifices we make for those we love, Haru is perfect for middle-grade readers.

Joe is a Human Person, based in Bristol (UK). He makes comics, illustrations and designs for other humans. In his own words, he is “a tall nerd” and he plays the drums. He also likes to hang out with his cat. He uses Instagram and Twitter to post project updates and artwork.

Book Launch & Exhibition Conversation, Exhibition & Closing: Ansel Krut & 26 Random Words Arranged Alphabetically with 26 Unrelated Images at Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center – In-Person & Online Hybrid Event

Ansel Krut will have a book conversation and celebration of the exhibition closing at Beyond Baroque titled 26 Random Words Arranged Alphabetically with 26 Unrelated Images.

26 Random Words Arranged Alphabetically with 26 Unrelated Images is just that, a collection of unlikely single words put together with unrelated images as a single volume. In the book, which is modeled on an old-fashioned ABC primer, Krut takes 26 randomly chosen words and matches them to his own drawings without assigning any obvious correlation between the word and the image. Readers are left to explore the slipperiness of language and unlock the coded language buried in both the sound of words and in the way drawings are made.

Ansel Krut was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1959. He studied medicine for 2 years before switching to Fine Art and he graduated with a BA from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982. After a scholarship to the Cite des Arts in Paris he completed an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in London. He was the Abbey Major Scholar in Painting at the British School at Rome in 1986/87 and then stayed on in Italy for a subsequent 3 years, returning to London in 1990. He now lives and works in London.

Krut was a visiting lecturer at the RCA from 2006 to 2014 and he has taught at many other art colleges throughout the UK. He was an artist-lecturer at the National Gallery in London from 2004 to 2012.

Richard Nielsen is an artist, activist, painter, photographer and printmaker, with a background in lithography and etching. Nielsen’s painting practice is informed by his exploration in the expanded fields of printmaking and analogue photography. From 2011 to 2022, Nielsen was the founder and Master-printer for Untitled Prints and Editions which offer printmaking collaboration to artists from around the world. As well as his personal painting practice, Richard Nielsen has been a close collaborator and life partner to Lauren Bon and her Metabolic Studio since 2007.

E.A. Hanks, with Aaron Blayaert, & The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road at Diesel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event

Julia Barz, in conversation with Amanda Montell, will discuss The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road.

In The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road former Vanity Fair staffer and New York Times contributor E. A. Hanks offers a beautifully written, deeply felt memoir recounting the solo, cross-country journey she made along Route 10 across the American southwest: a mission to uncover both what harrowing violence may or may not have happened to her late mother, but also, to look within and discover who she herself is—where her mother ends and she begins. Writing with a blend of memoir, road narrative, travelogue, and true crime, E.A. Hanks joins the ranks of Joan Didion, Dani Shapiro, and Ariel Levy as she tackles themes of inheritance, family legacies and secrets, mothers and daughters, and a changing national landscape. In her trusted loaded-up minivan “Minnie,” Liz Hanks (daughter of Tom Hanks and Susan Dillingham), follows the same route as a long-ago road trip with her mother to better understand the complicated woman who gave her life. Along the way, as she follows her mother’s diaries and her own recollections of the route, she begins to uncover secrets—some unexpectedly wonderful, and others darker and more violent than she ever imagined—that bring more questions than answers.

From the quiet expanses of White Sands National Park to the bustling streets of New Orleans, and the Texas-Mexico border to the swamps of the Florida panhandle, Liz interacts with the amazing breadth and diversity of the people that call these places home. Reckoning with the past, the present, her memories, and herself, Hanks brings us along a beautiful voyage towards understanding how the stories we tell about the places we’re from ultimately become the stories we tell about the people we are. Similar in scope and breadth as Wild by Cheryl Strayed, with the observational qualities of Joan Didion and the reverence for people and place of Peter Mayer, THE 10 is a patient, beautiful and contemporary work of wanderlust and research combined.

E.A. Hanks lives in Los Angeles, California. Formerly a staffer at Vanity Fair, she has contributed to Time, The Guardian, The New York Times, and others.

Aaron Bleyaert is a two-time Emmy award winning producer behind the hit podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and the Max travel show Conan O’Brien Must Go. He also wrote the hyper viral short film How to Lose Weight in 4 Easy Steps, which screened at Cannes, Sundance, and festivals worldwide.

Pondwater Society Reading and Open Mic Event at Private Residence – In-Person Event

Joanne Qualley Baines hosts the Pondwater Society Reading and Open Mic every 1st Saturday of the month.

We paint, we write, we read, we create things, we talk, we listen.

Sometimes we make things out of concrete that are too big for us to move and so the things stay where they are. One time we filled up our swimming pool with fishes and water lilies and cattails. Another time Eddie was building a little house out at the back of the property and the water was turned off back there and so he used water from the pond to mix the cement and so now that is the PondWater Estate.

Ticketed In-Store Signing: Mike Campbell & Heatbreaker at Book Soup – In-Person Event

Mike Campbell will sign Heartbreaker, a fast-paced, tender-hearted rock ‘n’ roll memoir for the ages,

Heartbreaker is part rags-to-riches story and part raucous, seat-of-the-pants adventure, recounting Campbell’s life and times as lead guitarist of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Mike Campbell was the lead guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from the band’s inception in 1976 to Petty’s tragic death in 2017. His iconic, melodic playing helped form the foundation of the band’s sound, as heard on definitive classics like “American Girl,” “Breakdown,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “Learning to Fly” and “Into the Great Wide Open.”

Together, Petty and Campbell wrote countless songs, including some of the band’s biggest hits: “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “You Got Lucky” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream” among them.

Campbell emerged—from a hardscrabble childhood on the north side of Jacksonville, often just days ahead of homelessness, raised by a single mother struggling on minimum wage. After months of saving, his mother bought him a $15 pawnshop acoustic guitar for his sixteenth birthday. With a chord book and a transistor radio, Campbell painstakingly taught himself to play.

When a chance encounter with a guidance counselor inspired him to enroll in the University of Florida, Campbell—broke, with nowhere else to go and the Vietnam draft looming—moved into a rundown farmhouse in Gainesville, where he met a 20-year-old Tom Petty. They were soon inseparable. Together they chased their shared dream all the way to Los Angeles, where Campbell would meet his destiny, and the love of his life, Marcie.

Heartbreaker is Mike Campbell’s heartfelt portrait of one throwaway kid’s lifesaving love of music and the creative heights he achieved through luck, collaboration, humility and extraordinary talent.
