Feminist Book Club: Bliss Montage at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event

Participants will discuss the book of stories, Bliss Montage by author Ling Ma.

In Bliss Montage, Ling Ma brings us eight wildly different tales of people making their way through the madness and reality of our collective delusions: love and loneliness, connection and possession, friendship, motherhood, the idea of home. A woman lives in a house with all her ex-boyfriends. A toxic friendship grows up around a drug that makes you invisible. An ancient ritual might heal you of anything—if you bury yourself alive.

These and other scenarios investigate the ways that the outlandish and the ordinary are shockingly, deceptively, heartbreakingly alike.

Ling Ma is a writer hailing from Fujian, Utah, and Kansas. She is the author of the novel Severance, which received the Kirkus Prize, a Whiting Award, the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award, and the New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award. She lives in Chicago with her family.

Creativity Book Club: Writing Down the Bones at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event

With insight, humor, and practicality, Natalie Goldberg inspires writers and would-be writers to take the leap into writing skillfully and creatively. She offers suggestions, encouragement, and solid advice on many aspects of the writer’s craft: on writing from “first thoughts” (keep your hand moving, don’t cross out, just get it on paper), on listening (writing is ninety percent listening; the deeper you listen, the better you write), on using verbs (verbs provide the energy of the sentence), on overcoming doubts (doubt is torture; don’t listen to it)—even on choosing a restaurant in which to write. Goldberg sees writing as a practice that helps writers comprehend the value of their lives. The advice in her book, provided in short, easy-to-read chapters with titles that reflect the author’s witty approach (“Writing Is Not a McDonald’s Hamburger,” “Man Eats Car,” “Be an Animal”), will inspire anyone who writes—or who longs to.

Determined to be an astrophysicist one day, Oliver explains everything he learns—like how the sun burps, how ghost particles fly through you, the uncanny similarities between Mercury and cafeteria meatballs, and most important, how the Big Bang is basically just like a fart in the school hallway.

Also, there are time-bending black holes, exploding supernova stars, and aliens! Well, there could be aliens.

As police surround the premises and television channels broadcast the hostage situation live, the eight strangers begin opening up to one another. Before long, the robber must decide which is the more terrifying prospect: going out to face the police, or staying in the apartment with this group of impossible people.

Norman Lear: His Life and Times is the unforgettable story of an extraordinary seven-decade career. Whetsell shows how Lear created the gold standard for television comedies, producing shows that were the first to give underrepresented members of society an authentic prime-time voice, while encouraging audiences to confront their own humanity and shortcomings. Vroman’s ED – Romance Writing Class with Amy Spaulding (8 weeks) – In-Person Event

(Please note: this 8-week class will be held on Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 pm – *1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, and 3/6, with no class on 2/27)

Have you always wanted to write your own HEA (that’s a happily-ever-after)? This class is for anyone interested in writing a romance novel—or who’s started one but feels like they need some help getting to that happy ending! In this 8-week course, bestselling author Amy Spalding will teach you the fundamentals of romance novels.

From Meet Cute to HEA: Writing the Modern Romance Novel will focus on structure, with specialized lectures each week to learn more about each beat, from the setup to the meet-cute, all the way through to that glorious HEA. Topics covered will include genre conventions (yes, like tropes!), dialogue/banter, building tension (sexual and otherwise!), inclusivity/diversity in storytelling, common pitfalls, and more.

Classes will be mostly lecture/discussion, with time set aside each week for writing exercises and brainstorming. The goal is for each writer to leave class with a full outline of their romance novel, as well as some example scenes and exercises they may be able to use in the manuscript as well.

Students will also leave class with resources: each week’s presentation will be sent out to all students, as well as additional links for further examples/education.

Amy Spalding is the author of several adult and YA novels, including the bestselling romance For Her Consideration, We Used to Be Friends and YA romance The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles), which was named a best book of 2018 by NPR, the Boston Globe, Kirkus Reviews, and more. She is a recipient of the 2023 Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award for the authentic, funny, and diverse representation of the LGBTQ+ community in her books.

Shea Andreone, with Sam Shaber, Shayla The Artist, Felicia Andrews, and Abbe Feder & Carry On: True Stories of the Wonder and Heartbreak of Trying to Start a Family at Book Soup – In-Person Event

Shea Andreone, in conversation with Sam Shaber, Shayla The Artist, Felicia Andrews, and Abbe Feder, will discuss and sign Carry On: True Stories of the Wonder and Heartbreak of Trying to Start a Family.

Carry On is a collection of honest, raw, sometimes heartbreaking, and sometimes hopeful stories about the struggle many people face while on their road to parenthood. Each essay focuses on an individual or couple, and the challenges she or he faced when they began trying to conceive and deliver a baby. These are stories about infertility, adoption, surrogacy, egg donation, miscarriage, stillborn, infant death, and much more. These are also stories of unbounded love, joy, and the realization of dreams. These are stories of perseverance, endurance, resilience, and acceptance.

Today, there is a new openness taking shape, a dialogue about the struggle to have children that did not exist in earlier generations. However, it is still uncharted territory for many.

Carry On is a very human story, one that crosses all cultures, religions, ethnicities and genders. The light at the end of the tunnel is a fervent hope to one day hold a little bundle of joy. Many of the dear people in this book achieve this goal. A few sadly do not. Carry On focuses on all these stories, and offers strength, guidance and hope to all of us.

At Skylight: Karissa Chen, with Esther Tseng, & Homeseeking at Skylight – In-Person Event

Karissa Chen, in conversation with Esther Chen, will discuss her novel Homeseeking.

Join us for an epic and intimate tale of one couple across sixty years as world events pull them together and apart, illuminating the Chinese diaspora and exploring what it means to find home far from your homeland.

A single choice can define an entire life.

Haiwen is buying bananas at a 99 Ranch Market in Los Angeles when he looks up and sees Suchi, his Suchi, for the first time in sixty years.

To recently widowed Haiwen it feels like a second chance, but Suchi has only survived by refusing to look back.

Homeseeking follows the separated lovers through six decades of tumultuous Chinese history as war, famine, and opportunity take them separately to the song halls of Hong Kong, the military encampments of Taiwan, the bustling streets of New York, and sunny California, telling Haiwen’s story from the present to the past while tracing Suchi’s from her childhood to the present, meeting in the crucible of their lives. Throughout, Haiwen holds his memories close while Suchi forces herself to look only forward, neither losing sight of the home they hold in their hearts.

Karissa Chen is a Fulbright fellow, Kundiman Fiction fellow, and a VONA/Voices fellow whose fiction and essays have appeared in The Atlantic, Eater, The Cut, NBC News THINK!, Longreads, PEN America, Catapult, Gulf Coast, and Guernica, among others. She was awarded an artist fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as well as residences at Millay Arts, where she was a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Creative Fellow; the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts; the Ragdale Foundation; and Willapa Bay AiR. She was formerly a senior fiction editor at The Rumpus and currently serves as the editor-in-chief at Hyphen magazine. She received an MFA in fiction from Sarah Lawrence College and splits her time between New Jersey and Taipei, Taiwan.

Striving to be better and suspiciously bored in the middle of his 5th or 6th SAG AFTRA strike, and cynically against the performative or cliche, he can be found either at The Offbeat or Cuevita when he’s not eating bugs on the L.A. River bike path, or inhaling the vape pens, losing at dominoes 25 miles somewhere from his house.

At Skylight: Manuel Betancourt, with Rashid Newson, & Hello Stranger at Skylight – In-Person Event

Manuel Betancourt, in conversation with Rashid Newson, will discuss his book Hello Stranger.

Hello Stranger is a book about chance encounters—at a bar, through social media, in a bathhouse—and what a stranger can reveal about who we are and who we could still yet be. A stranger, after all, is a site of endless possibilities.

As Manuel Betancourt looks back on his past relationships, he turns to characters and narratives that helped him question notions of what monogamy and coupledom (and relationships and marriage) can and should look like. From films like Before Sunrise and Cruising to the poetry of Frank O’Hara and the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, Betancourt uses pop culture to make sense of the alluring prospect of forging intimacies with strangers—even, or especially, the strangers within ourselves.

At once a personal excavation and a broad cultural critique, Betancourt grapples with everything from online sexting and real-life cruising to divorces and throuples. Hello Stranger examines the intimacies we crave, value, and oftentimes destroy with rote familiarity.

Manuel Betancourt is a queer Colombian culture writer and film critic. His work has been featured in The New York Times, BuzzFeed Reader, Los Angeles Times, Film Quarterly, Los Angeles Review of Books and GQ Style, among others. Manuel is the author of The Male Gazed (Catapult, 2023), Judy Garland’s Judy at Carnegie Hall (Bloomsbury Press, 2020), and a contributing writer to the Eisner Award-nominated graphic novel series, The Cardboard Kingdom (Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2018 & 2021).

Rasheed Newson is a television drama writer, producer, and novelist. He co-developed and is an executive producer of the drama series Bel-Air. His debut novel, My Government Means to Kill Me, was a 2023 Lambda Literary finalist for Gay Fiction and was named one of “The 100 Notable Books of 2022” by The New York Times. Rasheed lives in Pasadena with his husband and their two kids.

Author Event: David Rondel, with Claire Stanford & A Danger Which We Do Not Know: A Philosophical Journey into Anxiety at Edendale Branch Library, LAPL – In-Person Event

Join professor of philosophy David Rondel and author Claire Stanford for a discussion of Rondel’s new book, A Danger Which We Do Not Know: A Philosophical Journey into Anxiety.

A Danger Which We Do Not Know tells a story about how philosophy and anxiety are tangled up with each other. Rondel explores how anxiety is one of the main human contexts in which the inclination to philosophize arises. The experience of anxiety sometimes prompts us to reflect and inquire, drawing us toward perennial philosophical questions about the nature of reality and knowledge, freedom and morality, the meaning of life, and the prospect of death. Anxiety can give these questions fresh urgency, making them vivid and momentous in ways they otherwise might not be. Rondel also considers how turning to philosophy can sometimes offer relief for the anxious sufferer. In the face of the overwhelming force of anxiety, philosophy offers powerful tools.

David Rondel is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Nevada, Reno. His main areas of research and teaching specialization include social and political philosophy, philosophy of law, American Pragmatism, and the philosophy of emotion. He has published widely in these areas. He is the author of Pragmatist Egalitarianism (Oxford University Press, 2018) and, most recently, the editor of The Moral Psychology of Anxiety (Lexington Books, 2024) and A Danger Which We Do Not Know: A Philosophical Journey into Anxiety (Oxford University Press, 2024). He lives in Reno, Nevada, with his wife and two children.

Claire Stanford is the author of the novel Happy for You, which was named a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and awarded the 2023 Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize. Her writing has appeared in Black Warrior Review, The Rumpus, Lit Hub, Electric Lit, The Millions, the Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications. She lives in Los Angeles, where she is an assistant professor of creative writing at Loyola Marymount University.

Kids Book Club: Misfits at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event

Participants will discuss the book A Royal Conundrum (The Misfits) by author Lisa Yee and illustrator Dan Santat.

Olive Cobin Zang has…issues. And they mostly aren’t her fault. (No, really!) Though she often slips under the radar, problems have a knack for finding her. So, imagine her doubts when she’s suddenly dropped off at the strangest boarding school ever: a former castle turned prison that’s now a “reforming arts school”!

But nothing could’ve prepared Olive for RASCH (not “rash”). There, she’s lumped with a team of other kids who never quite fit in, and discovers that the academy isn’t what it seems—and neither is she. In fact, RASCH is a cover for an elite group of misfits who fight crime…and Olive has arrived just in time.

Turns out that RASCH is in danger of closing, unless Olive’s class can stop the heist of the century. And as Olive falls in love with this wacky school, she realizes it’s up to her new team to save the only home that’s ever welcomed them.

Lisa Yee has taken a private-investigator course, and it’s slightly possible that she’s a secret undercover operative. She’s also a Newbery Honoree and a National Book Award finalist for Maizy Chen’s Last Chance. Some of her other twenty-one novels are the groundbreaking Millicent Min, Girl Genius; Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time; and the DC Super Hero Girls series. A frequent contributor to NPR’s Books We Love, she divides her time between Western Massachusetts and Los Angeles.

Dan Santat is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of over a hundred books. His picture book The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend received the Caldecott Medal. He also illustrated The Blur, Lift, and Drawn Together, both written by Minh Lê, which received critical acclaim. Dan is also the creator of the Disney animated hit The Replacements. He lives in Southern California with his family. Learn more at dansantatbooks.com or visit him on Instagram and Twitter @dsantat.

Poetry and Prose for Peace: Refaat Alareer Remembrance at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event

About Refaat Alareer:

Killed by an Israeli airstrike last December, Refaat Alareer–the poet, the father, the professor, the storyteller– once said, “Palestine is not a distant concept but a living, breathing reality that is constantly shaped and reshaped by the stories and actions of us, its people.” Palestine may feel like a far-off place but to many Americans who are heartbroken over the daily growing number of killed Palestinians including 17,000 children, Palestine symbolizes the resistance to colonial empire and its overreaching military industrial complex. Refaat Alareer is revered as one of the preeminent voices of the Palestinian people.

Robert Crais & The Big Empty (Elvis Cole and Joe Pike Novel) at Diesel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event

Robert Crais will discuss and sign his latest novel, The Big Empty.

Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner, Joe Pike, race to find a terrifying, unidentified killer in this twisting, unpredictable thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Robert Crais.

Traci Beller was thirteen when her father disappeared in the sleepy town of Rancha, not far from Los Angeles. The evidence says Tommy Beller abandoned his family, but Traci never believed it. Now, ten years later, Traci is a high-profile influencer with millions of followers and the money to hire the best detective she can find: Elvis Cole.

Elvis heads to Rancha where an ex-con named Sadie Givens and her daughter, Anya, might have a line on the missing man. But when Elvis finds himself shadowed by a gang of vicious criminals, the missing persons cold case becomes far more sinister. Elvis calls his ex-Marine friend, Joe Pike, for help, and they follow Tommy Beller’s trail into the depths of a monstrous, hidden evil. The case flips on its head, victims become predators, predators become prey, and the question becomes: Can Elvis Cole save them all from this nightmare?

Robert Crais is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of twenty-four novels, twenty of them featuring private investigator Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner, Joe Pike. Crais was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America and has received numerous awards, among them an Anthony Award from the World Mystery Convention, multiple Shamus and Barry Awards, and a Falcon Award from the Maltese Falcon Society of Japan. His novels have been translated around the world and have received dozens of rave reviews and the highest praise.
