Book Club: The Boys in the Boat at Sherman Oaks Branch Library, LAPL – Online Event
Participants will discuss November’s selection, The Boys in the Boat by author Daniel James Brown.
For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler.

Small Business Saturday at Cellar Door Bookstore – In-Person Event
Support us along with other local independent and small businesses in your community! On Saturday, November 30th from 10:00am to 7:00pm, we’ll be celebrating Small Business Saturday!
Before we opened Cellar Door back in 2012, I sat down with my kids and asked them if they were okay taking this risk. Both agreed, and my son said that he couldn’t imagine growing up without his trips to Imagine That!
Having an indie bookstore in his community, a place to talk about books, find new ones, a place where they knew his name and the kinds of books he liked, made a huge difference. There are lots of communities without indie bookstores, so I don’t have to imagine what that’s like, but I think we deserve better. It’s about community, learning and understanding.
After the 2016 election, many of you came to the store, mostly in shock. When George Floyd was murdered by the police and protests erupted all over the world, you came in to learn, to understand that our world was not what you had thought it to be, and for many of you, that it was exactly what you knew it to be for far too long. When the pandemic hit, you ordered books to help you understand, to help you get through that time of fear and isolation. We mailed and delivered books to you because even though our country didn’t understand that bookstores are essential, we did and so did you.
Conversations on Palestine, climate change, immigration, income inequality, LGBTQ rights, health care, book banning and so much more need to continue. We don’t have to agree, but our right to have these books and these conversations is important, and Cellar Door is one of the places it can happen, even when universities are shutting down these conversations, even if the government itself tries to stop these conversations, we will have them here. So I invite you to join us on Small Business Saturday, and every other day for that matter.
Stay tuned for announcements here and on our social media about potential special events at Cellar Door Bookstore on that day.

Ezra Edmond & My Friend Levar at Vroman’s – In-Person Kids Event
Celebrate the joy of reading and imagination with Ezra; he loves discovering new picture books with his friend LeVar Burton, whom he knows from TV!
Ezra’s friend LeVar always has a book to share. From playing in the snow, to decorating eggs, to eating pancakes with Paul Bunyan–Ezra and LeVar explore all different kinds of stories. Through imaginative play they discover new worlds, learn to be curious, and revel in reading. One day young Ezra meets LeVar Burton in real life! Soon afterward, Ezra discovers that his friends know LeVar from TV, too.
This joyous celebration of the impact that LeVar Burton had on kids during his years on television stems from the author’s real-life admiration of LeVar Burton and their chance meeting when Ezra was a child.
Ezra Edmond is a debut author, illustrator, director, and animation producer with big ideas. His animated short, Blewish, was featured in several film festivals and celebrates being both Black and Jewish. When Tony met Shemp: The influence of Three Stooges slapstick violence on The Sopranos: Burt Kearns & Ray Richmond in conversation at Book Soup – In-Person Event
The violence was shocking, but the comedy made it palatable. What applies to the Three Stooges has also been said about one of the greatest television series of all time. The Sopranos creator David Chase admitted, “I am a huge Laurel and Hardy fan, but (writer and director) Terence Winters is a Three Stooges guy, and Terry is one of the best at depicting violence.”
Burt Kearns, author of Shemp!, the biography of the Three Stooges’ Shemp Howard, and Ray Richmond, author of The Sopranos: The Complete Visual History, discuss how the violent slapstick of the Three Stooges—and Shemp’s portrayal of mobsters in his solo career—influenced Tony Soprano and his “Stooges with guns.”
