Candacy Taylor & Overground Railroad at Vroman’s Bookstore

Author Candacy Taylor will present and sign her new book, Overground Railroad: The Green Book and the Roots of Black Travel in America.

This is the first book to explore the historical role and residual impact of the Green Book, a travel guide for black motorists. Published from 1936 to 1966, it was a very difficult and dangerous time for African-Americans to travel as they couldn’t eat, sleep, or buy gas at most white-owned businesses. This book listed places that were safe, an innovative solution for a horrific problem.

Sarah Gail Armstrong is a multi-platform, pansexual, panoramic artist, poet and performer. Her work illuminates issues and experiences of race, gender, class, and sexuality.

Viva Padilla is founder and editor-in-chief of Dryland, and has worked at numerous presses. She is a first generation Chicana from South Central L.A., a poet, writer and daughter of Mexican immigrants.

Frank Escamilla is a poet, educator, spoken word artist, and teaching Artist and Director at Street Poets Inc. He is known as the “Bus Stop Prophet” for his propensity to bust rhymes in unexpected places and has led workshops for all ages and in many venues and locations.

Peter Woods is co-partner and publisher of Writ Large Press, which is now part of The Accomplices, an arts and media collaborative. He has created and produced numerous events and literary arts functions to expand engagement and community building and amplify marginalized voices.

Sharon Langley & A Ride to Remember at Vroman’s Bookstore – Kids Event

This is a story inspired by the author’s childhood when many amusement parks were segregated, and African American families were not allowed entry. In the summer of 1963, due to protests, the Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Maryland became desegregated and open to all for the first time. The author was the first African American child to ride on the Carousel, which occurred on the same day as the MLK march on Washington. The book includes many pictures and extras!
