Around them the Ottoman Empire is crumbling, the world is heading towards war, and the Armenian minority is subjected to increasing repression, culminating in the genocide of 1915. What follows is a tale of love, loss, and redemption in the diaspora, told by four generations of women, each becoming the guardian angel of the next.

Paula Saunders & The Distance Home at Skylight Bookstore
Please join us to hear author Paula Saunders present and read from her debut novel, The Distance Home. (She is the wife of author George Saunders).
This novel is a profoundly American story. Set in the landscape and culture of rural 1960s South Dakota, it is a near autobiographical look at a loving but struggling young family in turmoil, and of two siblings, Rene and Leon. They share a talent for dance, but it is a gift their father adores in his daughter, and loathes in his son. The author explores this distinctive American dichotomy: What is to become of the vulnerable in a culture of striving and power? And what is the effect of this striving and power on both those who dominate and those who are overrun?
