Richard Foss at Palisades Branch Library
Richard Foss, author and board member of the Culinary Historians of Southern California, will discuss Cooking and Dining in Victorian Southern California. The diet in California during the Rancho period had very little variety, but the discovery of gold brought immigrants with different tastes, and the arrival of railroads and steamships brought imported and luxury items as well as the first convenience foods. Kitchen modernization also was changing rapidly, and what and how Californians were eating went through extraordinary changes.

In Real Life: Performance presents Poetic Research Bureau. The Poetic Research Bureau, a storefront library and experimental publishing collective, presents two reading series. @SEA moves beyond single-channel readings of texts toward interdisciplinary programs that inter-mingle video and film projection, poetry readings, performance, and unconventional lectures. Improvising the Mingus School, programmed by the poet and archivist Harmony Holiday, riffs on the concept of a Charles Mingus School of deep listening, screenings, and expansive talk—“an in interdisciplinary workshop akin to Mingus’s own jazz workshop.”
