Tween Book Club at Fairfax Branch Library–Children’s Event
Tween Book Club is for ages 9 to 12, or 4th grade and up. This month we will discuss The War That Saved My Life, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. This moving historical novel set during World War II is about a nine-year-old girl with a foot deformity who has never been allowed to leave her London apartment. But as children are sent to the countryside to escape the war, Ada sneaks out along with her brother who is being sent away. Does the war hold potential for Ada to live a better life?
We will have copies available at the branch, and talk about the book in a relaxed environment. Refreshments will be provided.

Join the all of us at the Inlandia Institute as we kick off a new season of Conversations at the Culver, featuring: Jo Scott-Co, author of Mass, in conversation with Chiwan Choi, founder and publisher of Writ Large Press.
In Mass we refer back to 1966, when Charles Whitman climbed the top of UT Austin’s clock tower and performed the first televised and (at the time) deadliest mass shooting in American history. Fifty years later we still consume such images of domestic terror. Mass turns the camera and looks underneath this ritual of violent public spectacle, tracing the story of a lost priest who befriended Whitman fifteen years before his rampage. Part lyric meditation and part narrative history, Mass explores our collective conscience.

Saturday Afternoon Poetry, hosted by Don Kingfisher Campbell, will feature an open reading with three featured poets this week:
Brian Dunlap is a native of Los Angeles who still lives in the city of his birth. He received both his BA from UC Riverside and MFA from Fresno State in Creative Writing where he honed his love for writing about place and his hometown Los Angeles. He has been published in Angel City Review, CCM-Entropy and Muse.
Toti O’Brien has been published in Womb Magazine, Red Ochre, Black & White, if&when, and other online and printed journals. She has published two short stories collections (“Africa” and “Reversed Memories”), a collection of essays (“Lanterna Magica”), and two illustrated children’s books in Italian. She has collaborated for a decade with Italian magazines, such as Salpare,Mezzocielo (the “women against the mafia” mag), Lostile and Inguine, with columns, articles, and short stories. Cindy Rinne is an experimental storyteller and record-keeper of many cultures. Her ethnopoetry is rich with texture and description connecting the ancient/present and the sacred within.
