Art Meza’s Chicano Soul Exhibit at John Muir Branch, LAPL

A Personal History of LA Punk at Stories LA

Michael Helquist at Book Soup
Author Michael Helquist discusses and signs his prize-winning book, Marie Equi: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions, a non-fiction exploration of the fiercely independent life of an extraordinary woman. Born in 1872, Marie Equi endured childhood labor in a gritty Massachusetts textile mill before fleeing to an Oregon homestead with her first longtime woman companion, who described her as impulsive, earnest and kind-hearted. Her courage, stubborn resolve, and passion for justice propelled her self-study into medical school and ability to become one of the first practicing woman physicians in the northwest. She fought for women’s suffrage, labor rights, and reproductive freedom, broke boundaries in all facets of life, and paid a steep personal price for living by her convictions.

Watchlist Anthology at Skylight Books
Join us as authors from the anthology, Watchlist: 32 Stories by Persons of Interest, read and discuss their works. These contributors respond to and meditate on the surveillance culture in which we live, and try to answer the question: What does it mean to be watched? Aimee Bender, Alexis Landau, Miles Klee, Bryan Hurt, and Cory Doctorow are featured.
Aimee Bender is the author of five books, most recently The Color Master, a New York Times Notable Book of 2013. She teaches creative writing at USC.
Alexis Landau published her first novel, The Empire of the Senses in 2015. She lives in LA with her family.
Miles Klee is an editor for the site The Daily Dot, as well as author of Ivyland (2012) and the story collection True False (2015).
Bryan Hurt is the author of Everyone Wants to Be Ambassador to France, winner of the Starcherone Prize for Innovative Fiction.
Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist, journalist, and blogger, as well as co-editor of Boing Boing and co-founder of the UK Open Rights Group.

ALL LIT UP at Chevalier’s
All Lit Up is a monthly literary effort presenting literary artists and musicians, as well as Open Mic surprises. This month features prose, poetry and music from local luminaries:
Jim Ruland, is the author of the award-winning novel Forest of Fortune and the short story collection Big Lonesome. He is curator of the Vermin on the Mount reading series, now in its 12th year.
David Rocklin, is the author of The Luminist (2011) and The Night Language (due in 2017). He is the founder and host of Roar Shack, a LA-based reading series at 826LA in Echo Park.
Rebecca Gonzales, was the March 2014 winner of The Poets of New York series at the Bowery. She has three books of poetry and is now working on a book of short stories, poetry and prose.
James Morrison, is an actor, playwright and filmmaker, as well as a musician with two folk-rock albums.
Karen Stefano, is the author of the short story collection The Secret Game of Words, and she serves as fiction editor for Connotation Press.

Charles Rappleye discusses and signs Herbert Hoover in the White House: The Ordeal of the Presidency. Rappleye’s surprising portrait of a Depression-era president Herbert Hoover, reveals a very different figure than the usual Hoover, engaged and active but loathe to experiment, and conscious of his inability to convey hopes to the country. The real Hoover, the author argues, lacked the tools of leadership, as he was shy in public and passionate in private. He had a first class mind, but a second-class temperament.
