Art Meza’s Chicano Soul Exhibit at John Muir Branch, LAPL

Michael Helquist at Book Soup
Author Michael Helquist discusses and signs his prize-winning book, Marie Equi: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions, a non-fiction exploration of the fiercely independent life of an extraordinary woman. Born in 1872, Marie Equi endured childhood labor in a gritty Massachusetts textile mill before fleeing to an Oregon homestead with her first longtime woman companion, who described her as impulsive, earnest and kind-hearted. Her courage, stubborn resolve, and passion for justice propelled her self-study into medical school and ability to become one of the first practicing woman physicians in the northwest. She fought for women’s suffrage, labor rights, and reproductive freedom, broke boundaries in all facets of life, and paid a steep personal price for living by her convictions.

Watchlist Anthology at Skylight Books
Join us as authors from the anthology, Watchlist: 32 Stories by Persons of Interest, read and discuss their works. These contributors respond to and meditate on the surveillance culture in which we live, and try to answer the question: What does it mean to be watched? Aimee Bender, Alexis Landau, Miles Klee, Bryan Hurt, and Cory Doctorow are featured.
Aimee Bender is the author of five books, most recently The Color Master, a New York Times Notable Book of 2013. She teaches creative writing at USC.
Alexis Landau published her first novel, The Empire of the Senses in 2015. She lives in LA with her family.
Miles Klee is an editor for the site The Daily Dot, as well as author of Ivyland (2012) and the story collection True False (2015).
Bryan Hurt is the author of Everyone Wants to Be Ambassador to France, winner of the Starcherone Prize for Innovative Fiction.
Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist, journalist, and blogger, as well as co-editor of Boing Boing and co-founder of the UK Open Rights Group.
