At Skylight: Daniel Alexander Jones & Omi Osun Joni L. Jones Present: Love Like Light & Particle and Wave at Skylight Bookstore – On-site Event
Daniel Alexander Jones in conversation with Omi Osun Joni L. Jones, will present the books: Love Like Light and Particle and Wave, respectively.
Daniel Alexander Jones’ Love Like Light: Plays and Performance Texts (53rd Street Press) collects the author’s texts of Bel Canto, Black Light, Blood: Shock: Boogie, clayangels, Duat, Phoenix Fabrik, and The Book of Daniel into a shifting transformational body of work. Each play is a provocation to the possibility of a more just and loving world. It’s a reunion of the avant-guards of New York, Austin, and Minneapolis, among others, and includes an interview and essays by others.
Particle and Wave: A Conversation (53rd State Press) is a companion volume, and features a book-length conversation between Daniel Alexander Jones and poet, scholar, and activist Alexis Pauline Gumbs about Love Like Light, and the ways that love, like lights, suffuses everything and is the condition and power of change in the world.
Joni Osum Joni L. Jones is an artist/scholar/facilitator who employs black feminist aesthetics and theatrical jazz principles in her performance work, her pedagogy, and her facilitation. Her most recent book is Theatrical Jazz: Performance, Ase, and the Power for the Present Moment (Ohio State University Press). She is Professor Emerita from the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Texas, at Austin.

Denise Hamilton, Alex Espinosa & Aimee Bender Present Speculative LA Fiction Anthology via Skylight Books – Online Event
Join editor Denise Hamilton and contributing authors Alex Espinosa & Aimee Bender to hear themdiscuss the new anthology Speculative Los Angeles.
This is the debut title in a new city-based anthology series featuring all-new stories with speculative, sci-fi, and paranormal themes—each using distinct neighborhood settings as a launching pad.
Denise Hamilton is the author of seven crime novels and the editor of the anthologies Los Angeles Noir and Los Angeles Noir 2: The Classics. She is a former Los Angeles Times journalist and a proud LA native, and editor of Speculative Los Angeles.
Alex Espinoza was born in Tijuana, Mexico to parents from the state of Michoacan and raised in suburban Los Angeles. He is the author of two novels and his most recent book, Cruising: An Intimate History of a Radical Pastime. He is the Tomas Rivera Endowed Chair of Creative Writing at UC Riverside.
Aimee Bender is the author of six books, and has received many literary awards. Her work has been translated into sixteen languages, and her short fiction published in numerous journals. She lives in LA with her family and teaches creative writing at USC.

Writers Week to honor three U.S. poet laureates
Rita Dove, Joy Harjo, and Juan Felipe Herrera will each receive lifetime achievement awards during a special event Feb. 19.

Three U.S. poet laureates will close out this year’s Writers Week, California’s longest-running free literary festival, held by UC Riverside for the 44th year. Rita Dove, Joy Harjo, and Juan Felipe Herrera will each be honored with the annual Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) – UCR Department of Creative Writing Lifetime Achievement Award during a special closing event at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 19.

The 43rd Annual Writers Week Conference at UC Riverside (Day 1 of 5)
Join us for Day 1 of the 43rd Annual Writers Week at UCR, the longest-running, free literary event in California, featuring renowned authors of the day alongside those at the start of promising careers. Tom Lutz is Writers Week director.
All events are free and open to the public, and parking is free (permits available at the Kiosk).
12:30 pm: Tom Lutz is the author, most recently, of Born Slippy: A Novel. He is founding editor of Los Angeles Review of Books and a Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at UCR. His other work includes two books of travel essays, plus the cultural histories Crying and Doing Nothing, and the literary histories Cosmopolitan Vistas and American Nervousness, 1903.
1:30 pm: Norma Cantu (Steven Minot Lecture) is the author, most recently, of Cabanuelas: A Love Story and Meditacion Fronteriza: Poems of Life. She has published articles on a number of academic subjects as well as poetry and fiction. Her publications on border literature and other subjects have earned her an international reputation as a scholar and folklorist. Her award-winning Canicula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. She edits the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Cuture and Traditions book series at Texas A&M University Press.
3:00 pm: Jerry Stahl is a writer of memoir (Permanent Midnight, OG Dad), novels (Perv, I Fatty, Pain Killers, Happy Mutant Baby Pills, Bad Sex on Speed), television (Twin Peaks, Hemingway and Gellhorn, CSI, Maron, Escape at Dannemora), and film (Permanent Midnight, Bad Boys II, Urge, Chuck), and other works.
4:30 pm: Lisa Teasley (Steven Minot Lecturer) is the author of the acclaimed novels Heat Signature and Dive, and the award-winning story collection, Glow in the Dark. Her frequently anthologized essays, stories and poems have appeared widely and in mumerous journals. She is writer and presenter of the BBC TV documentary “High School Prom” and Senior Fiction Editor at LARB. She is also a painter, represented by Marie Baldwin Gallery.
7:00 pm: Walter Mosley – (LARB/ UCR Lifetime Achievement Award) is one of the most versatile and admires writers in America. He is the author of more than fifty books, including the recently released Elements of Fiction, a non-fiction book about the art of writing fiction, and the best-selling mystery series featuring “Easy Rawlins.” His work has been translated into 25 languages, and he is also writer and executive producer on the John Singleton FX show, Snowfall. He is a winner of numerous awards, and lives in New York City and Los Angeles.
