Not A Cult, A New Bookstore In Los Angeles, Puts Authors of Color At The Forefront

Not-A-Cult-Bookstore-Credit_-Rhiannon-McGavinThe door of Los Angeles’ newest bookstore is propped open on a quiet section of Hollywood Boulevard, the front window displaying books on a handmade wooden bookshelf. Inside the front room, you’ll find more books and merchandise below a neon light thought bubble and a sign that reads, “I still haven’t figured out all the people I am.” The staff is friendly, warm and eager to listen. In the back room, separated by curtains, art hangs on the yellow walls. The large space is waiting to be used by Not a Cult, an independent publisher turned bookstore.

The Book Writers Group meets every first Monday of the month at the Robertson Branch Library. Are you writing a book and looking for feedback? Need deadlines to help you reach your writing goals? Then this is the group for you!

For each meeting, please bring 5-10 double-spaced  pages of writing to share with the group. Every member will have time to present his/her writing and receive constructive feedback.

Depending on the size of the group, each person will receive 10-15 minutes of time to share and  receive feedback.

downloadMichael Connelly & The Night Fire at L.A. Times Book Club, Ricardo Montalban Theatre

The Los Angeles Times Book Club welcomes bestselling author Michael Connelly, who will present and sign his new book, The Night Fire, in which Los Angeles Detectives Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard team up on an unsolved case that obsessed Bosch’s longtime mentor.

Connelly is also the executive producer of Bosch, the Amazon series based on the Harry Bosch book series, which is now filming season 6. Prior to his successful writing and publishing career, he was a journalist and reported for the L.A Times.

Lambda LitFefst 2019Lambda LitFest Event: Modern Love, Mental Wellness & Healing in LGBTQ Literature at Cal State LA

This event is part of the 2019 Lambda LitFest, and most events will be free, unless otherwise posted, and offered at various venues throughout Southern California during the next week.

Join us today at CSULA to hear Thea Monyee, therapist with Counseling and Psychological Services at CSULA, moderate a discussion with Frederick Smith and Chaz Lamar Cruz, authors of In Case You Forgot, exploring themes of wellness, and healing in LGTBQ literature.

The stage adaptation of the acclaimed Luis J. Rodriguez memoir and award-winning book, Always Running, is being performed at the CASA 1010 Theatre August 31 – October 20, 2019, so check website links to purchase tickets and select dates from the full schedule. This play/memoir tells the story of a young man who escapes a life of gang violence, discrimination, depression, and drug addiction through art, the Chicano movement poetry and service.

Literature can transform the way we look at the world, deepening our understanding of even the most complex issues of today.

Check out the book of the month from the library, read it, then come join us for the conversation and crafts! Children ages 5+ and their families are welcome.

Our book for July is: Last Stop On Market Street, by Matt de la Pena, which received the 2016 Newberry Medal and a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor. Library copies are available to borrow at the Information Desk.
