Book Club Bonanza: Let’s Celebrate Asian Pacific Voices via Central Library, LAPL – Online Teen Event
Teens may join our librarians online as they share books for teens that celebrate Asian Pacific voices in YA literature and celebrate and join the Big Read.
The Best We Could Do, by author Thi Bui, is an illustrated graphic noel portraying one family’s poignant journey from war-torn Vietnam to America and will resonate with all who hope for a better future while longing for a simpler past.
The book club discussion itself will be held on Monday, May 23rd, but we will also host a read-alikes discussion on May 9th.

Stuart Neville & The House of Ashes via Vroman’s – Online Event
Join us to hear author Stuart Neville, present and discuss his novel, The House of Ashes, a chilling and gorgeous portrait of violence and resilience, told in two voices.
Sara Keane’s husband, Damien, has uprooted them from England and moved them to his native Northern Ireland for a “fresh start” in the wake of her nervous breakdown. Sara, who knows no one in Northern Ireland, is jobless, carless, friendless–all but a prisoner in her own house. When a blood-soaked old woman beats on the door, insisting the house is hers before being bundled back to her care facility, Sara begins to understand the house has a terrible history her husband never intended for her to discover. Vroman’s Live: Local Author Day with David W. Reed & Lin Nelson Benedek via Vroman’s – Online Event
Join us to hear local authors David W. Reed & Lin Nelson Benedek discuss their new books: Uphill and into the Wind and Singing Lessons, respectively.
David W. Reed’s Uphill and into the Wind is set in 1973, when our nation was torn apart by the Vietnam War, and the massacre of unarmed students at Kent State. Disenchanted with his future, he author set out with two new friends to cross the United States with just their bicycles and cameras to truly see America. They get more than they bargained for, with menacing animals, extreme weather, and astonishing encounters. Through it all they are changed forever, in ways they did not expect, by their long journey into the unknown.
Lin Nelson Benedek’s Singing Lessons is a poetic collection that is both grand and intimate. Michelle Bitting calls it a “…sumptuous repast for ear and imagination as Benedek pulls us in close to her contemplated world of things and sings us through.”

Book Writers Group at Robertson Branch Library, LAPL
The Book Writers Group meets every first Monday of the month at the Robertson Branch Library. Are you writing a book and looking for feedback? Need deadlines to help you reach your writing goals? Then this is the group for you!
For each meeting, please bring 5-10 double-spaced pages of writing to share with the group. Every member will have time to present his/her writing and receive constructive feedback.
Depending on the size of the group, each person will receive 10-15 minutes of time to share and receive feedback.

Diane Leslie’s Book Club: A Door in the Earth by Amy Waldman at Diesel Bookstore
Author Amy Waldman discusses and signs her new novel, A Door in the Earth at Diane Leslie’s Book Club..
This book is a about an idealistic young Afghan-American woman trapped between her ideals and the complicated truth. Galvanized by a book she reads in college by humanitarian Gideon Crane, sensitive student Parveen makes a pilgrimage to a remote village in the land of her birth to make a difference, only to find the many fabrications in the memoir and decide where her loyalties lie. The author reported form Afghanistan for the New York Times after 9/11, and has created a taut, propulsive novel about power, perspective, and idealism to reveal complicated truths in our living history.
