Book Club Bonanza: Indigenous Voices via LAPL Teen Event – Online Event

Join Los Angeles Public Library for a Teen Book Club Bonanza reading and discussion of two indigenous voices and their books:

The Ghost Collector by Allison Mills, is a tale of lives that may be haunted by grieving. Shelley has inherited her family’s ability to catch ghosts in her hair and help them along, both animals and people. But what happens if we can’t have what we want – our loved one to stay?

A Girl Called Echo: Volume 1, by Katherine Vermette, features compelling illustrations and a female main character who is caught in the foster care system. She discovers her Metis heritage first-hand, while slipping back and forth through time.

Moira First Press Reading Series: Jose Hernandez Diaz & Open Micvia Woodbury University/ Microsoft Teams & In-Person – Hybrid Event

Join Woodbury University for the next Moira First Press Reading & Open Mic event, offered both virtually and in-person, to hear featured artist, Jose Hernandez Diaz.

Jose Hernandez Diaz is a 2017 NEA Fellow, and the author of The Fire Eater (Texas Review Press, 2020). His work has been published or featured in The American Poetry Review, Boulevard, Crazyhorse, Georgia Review, Iowa Review, The Kenyon Review, The Los Angeles Times, LitHub, The Nation, Poetry, and in The Best American Nonrequired Reading. He has been a finalist for The Andres Montoya Prize, The Colorado Prize, The Akron Prize, and the National Poetry Series. Currently he is an Associate Editor a Frontier Poetry and a Guest Editor at Palette Poetry. He teaches creative writing online for Litro Magazine, Frontier Poetry, and other venues.

Join LAPL for the Teen Book Club Bonanza: Horror & Suspense Edition.

Two books will be discussed at his meeting:

Eat, Brains, Love by Jeff Hart is a laugh-out-loud funny, surprisingly romantic, zombie road trip novel filled with heart, and guts.

Locke & Key V. 1 (Issues 1-6) by Joe Hill is an American comic book series, with illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez.

Dennis Cooper & I Wished via Skylight Bookstore – Online Event

Dennis Cooper will present I Wished, in which the author writes about George Miles, love, loss, addiction, suicide, and how fiction can capture these things, and how it also fails to capture them. .

I Wished is the author’s first novel in ten years, and it revisits the George Miles Cycle of acclaimed novels and the inspiration for the Cycle (Closer, Frisk, Try, Guide, and Period). This is his masterwork, and is his most raw, personal, and haunted book of all.

Shannon Hale & LeUyen Pham & Friends Forever at Once Upon a Time Bookstore – In-Person Kids Event

Join us to meet children’s authors Shannon Haleand and LeUyen Pham, as they present their book, Friends Forever.

Shannon Haleand is the New York Times best-selling author of over thirty children’s and young adult novels, including graphic novel memoirs Real Friends and Best Friends, and multiple award winners The Goose Girl, Book of a Thousand Days, and Newbery Honor recipient Princess Academy.

LeUyen Pham is a children’s book illustrator and author. She has illustrated and written more than 80 books. In 2020, she won a Caldecott Honor for her illustrations in the book Bear Came Along.

This is a meet and greet event to sign books and visit with fans of all ages. Graphic novel readers will enjoy the third book in the Friendship series, and picture book readers will be thrilled with the cuteness of Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn.

Treehouse Event: Jamal Yogis & Matthew Allen & Mop Rides the Waves of Change via Skylight Books & LA Public Library –  Online Kids Event   

Skylight Treehouse and the LA Public Library present an interactive kids event celebrating author Jamal Yogis and illustrator Matthew Allen’s new picture book, Mop Rides the Waves of Change. This event is presented in partnership with the band Punk Rock Marthas.

The second in the Mop Rides series finds surfer kid Mop and his friends in a quest to save the ocean with mindfulness, surfing, and a band—The Coconut Heads.

Howard Paar, with Denice Hamilton, & Top Rankin’: A Punk/Ska Noir Novel via Book Soup – Online Event

Author Howard Paar, in conversation with author Denise Hamilton, will present and discuss his book, Top Rankin’: A Punk/Ska Noir Novel.

Top Rankin’ captures the spirit of LA in 1980, and is populated with real-life characters from the music world in Los Angeles, New York and London, when everything’s changing, from the decadent, diverse punk rock scene to the violent, hard-core scene. Although club owner James Dual wants no part of that, his efforts are thwarted from every direction.

Terry Miles, with Cory Doctorow, & Rabbits via Book Soup – Online Event

Author Terry Miles, in conversation with author Cory Doctorow, will present and discuss his new book, Rabbits.

Terry Miles’s new book depicts how a deadly underground game might just be altering reality itself in this new adventure set in the world of the hit Rabbits podcast. Rabbits is a mysterious alternate reality game so vast it uses the entire world as its canvas. Since the game started in 1959, ten iterations have appeared and nine winners declared. The deeper you get, the more dangerous the game becomes, and when K—a Rabbits obsessive—enters the eleventh round, the fate of the entire universe is at stake.

Monday Night Fiction Workshop at Beyond Baroque – Zoom Online   

The free Monday Night Fiction Workshop led by Raquel Baker is a community writing workshop in which participants are asked to bring copies of 2-3 pages of fiction to read, and for critique and discussion. Registration is required.

Raquel Baker earned a PhD in English Literary Studies from the University of Iowa and an MFA in Creative Writing form Mills College. She is currently Assistant Professor of Postcolonial Studies and Transnational Literatures at CSU Channel Islands. She also has published poetry and non-fiction, and done readings with the Ventura Poetry Project.
