Treehouse Event: Jamal Yogis & Matthew Allen & Mop Rides the Waves of Change via Skylight Books & LA Public Library –  Online Kids Event   

Skylight Treehouse and the LA Public Library present an interactive kids event celebrating author Jamal Yogis and illustrator Matthew Allen’s new picture book, Mop Rides the Waves of Change. This event is presented in partnership with the band Punk Rock Marthas.

The second in the Mop Rides series finds surfer kid Mop and his friends in a quest to save the ocean with mindfulness, surfing, and a band—The Coconut Heads.

Howard Paar, with Denice Hamilton, & Top Rankin’: A Punk/Ska Noir Novel via Book Soup – Online Event

Author Howard Paar, in conversation with author Denise Hamilton, will present and discuss his book, Top Rankin’: A Punk/Ska Noir Novel.

Top Rankin’ captures the spirit of LA in 1980, and is populated with real-life characters from the music world in Los Angeles, New York and London, when everything’s changing, from the decadent, diverse punk rock scene to the violent, hard-core scene. Although club owner James Dual wants no part of that, his efforts are thwarted from every direction.

Monday Night Fiction Workshop at Beyond Baroque – Zoom Online   

The free Monday Night Fiction Workshop led by Raquel Baker is a community writing workshop in which participants are asked to bring copies of 2-3 pages of fiction to read, and for critique and discussion. Registration is required.

Raquel Baker earned a PhD in English Literary Studies from the University of Iowa and an MFA in Creative Writing form Mills College. She is currently Assistant Professor of Postcolonial Studies and Transnational Literatures at CSU Channel Islands. She also has published poetry and non-fiction, and done readings with the Ventura Poetry Project.

Author Raakhee Mirchandani and illustrator Holly Hatam, will read and discuss their new book, Hair Twins.

Hair Twins is the story of a Sikh father and daughter with a special bond. They proudly celebrate and share a family tradition concerning how they care for their hair and their choices of hairstyles they select from each morning. In this charming picture book we learn that the daughter’s favorite style is the tight bun on the top of her head, which is like the joora her father wears ev3ery day under his turban. Wesley Brown, with Douglas Kearney, & Tragic Magic via Skylight Books – Online Event   

Wesley Brown, in conversation with poet Douglas Kearney, will read and discuss his book, Tragic Magic.

Wesley Brown is the author of three novels, a collection of short stories, Dance of the Infidels, and four produced plays. Tragic Magic is the story of Melvin Ellington, a.k.a. Mouth, a Black, twenty-something ex-college radical who has just been released from a five-year prison stretch after being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. The author structures this first person tale around Ellington’s first day on the outside, haunted by a past that drives him to make sense of choices leading up to this day.

Originally published in 1978, and edited by Toni Morrison during her time at Random House, this Of the Diaspora edition of Tragic Magic features a new introduction by author Wesley Brown.

Speaker Series: Meet Lynne Thompson, New Poet Laureate of Los Angelesvia The Ebell – Online Event 

Lynne Thompson, since being appointed our new Poet Laureate in 2021 by Mayor Eric Garcetti, will share her path to this two year appointment, and discuss her writing and literary works.

Thompson is the author of three books of poetry: Start with a Small Guitar, Beg No Pardon, and Fretwork. She serves on the boards of Cave Canem and the Los Angeles Review of Books, and is chair of the Scripps College Board of Trustees. She has received numerous awards, and other recent work is forthcoming in New York Quarterly, New England Review, the 202 Best American Poetry, among others.
