iuPaul Smedley & Huntington Tracks at Vroman’s Bookstore

Join us to hear author Paul Smedley discuss and read from his book, Huntington Trades.

This book tells the story of how Collis and Henry Huntington built their railroading empire into Southern California between the 1870s and the Great Merger of 1911. It is a capitalist’s history, and includes the railroad companies and individuals who tried to stop the Huntington’s progress to forward their own plans and schemes. The birth of the Pacific Electric Railway grew into the most successful electric railway in the world; with 1.100 miles of track in four counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino. The book is enhanced with photos, news clippings, and maps to tell the story the best way possible.

Please join us for a beer tasting and book signing as author J. Ryan Stradal discusses his new novel, The Lager Queen of Minnesota.

Two sisters. One farm. A family is split when their father leaves their shared inheritance entirely to Helen, his younger daughter. Despite baking award-winning pies at the local nursing home, her older sister, Edith, struggles to make a living, and wonders what her life would be like if she had a share of that money. Helen buys a successful brewery with the proceeds, and is rigid as a steel keg, while Edith has a heart as big as the state. In this deeply affecting family saga, resolution can take decades, but it is surprising and moving when it comes.

Please join us as Your Author Series welcomes children’s author and illustrator Tao Nyeu, as part of our Summer Author Program and Summer Reading challenge. The author will be reading her book, Squid and Octopus: Friends for Always, which shows us a glimpse into the life of two funny friends. She specializes in silk screens and water-based inks, giving her illustrations a distinctive style. Her work has won many awards, and has been influenced by Shel Silverstein, Richard Scarry, and Beatrix Potter.

She has been a journalist for ABC News, CNN, and PBS, and is currently serving as a marketing consultant for the entertainment industry. In her spare time she enjoys the architecture of Los Angeles and the great outdoors.

Los Angeles Literature Events 5/27/19 – 6/02/19

BookNew Book Club: Spiritual Classics with Nick Shindo Street at the Last Bookstore

At some point, everyone has to wrestle with personal belief and one’s orientation to the universe. Whether addressing origins or destiny, what lies inside or what’s “out there”—it’s a good bet that those who’ve come before have something to offer. In this club we dive into the best wisdom we can find, guided by author and journalist Nick Shindo Street. Nick is the senior writer at the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture, and his biggest turn-ons are wonder, awe, and curiosity.

The choice for our first Book Club selection is The Undiscovered Self, by Carl Jung, and we will take stock of the individual in church and state.

Mar VistaCelebrate National Poetry Month with Poets Reading at Mar Vista Library, LAPL

Join L.A. writer and host Brian Dunlap at the Mar Vista Library as he welcomes three powerful local poets of color to Send off National Poetry Month in style.

Bridgette Bianca is a poet and professor from South Central Los Angeles. She has performed her poetry in venues all around Southern California, and is one half of the literary curating team, Making Room for Black Women, with Sanunra Williams of My lit Box. Her first book of poetry will be released by Writ Large Press in 2020.

Nikolai Garcia grew up in South Central Los Angeles; currently works with homeless youth in East Hollywood; and has been sleeping in Compton for the last fifteen years. He is an Associate Editor for Dryland, a literary arts journal based in South Central. His first chapbook, “Nuclear Shadows of Palm Trees,” will be released this summer through DSTL Arts.

Irene Sanchez, Ph.D, Poet, Teacher was born in South East Los Angeles and raised in LA and later the Inland Empire (Jurupa Valley, CA). She is a Xicana and mama, award winning poet, and writer. She is co-founder of the Southwest Political Report and founder of Xicana Ph.D. where you can find some of her writings.

Irene is the co-host of a monthly poetry open mic in Pomona, CA called Poetry y Pan at Cafe con Libros Press. In 2017 she received a fellowship to attend The Pink Door writers retreat. She is a VONA 2018 alum for the poetry workshop with Willie Perdomo. She is the 2018 winner of the Joe Hill Labor Poetry Award. Her work has been featured in/by Zócalo Public Square, KPCC, Remezcla, Huffington Post, Inside Higher Ed and more. Irene has spoken/presented at over 50 colleges/universities.

Brian Dunlap is a native Angeleño who still lives in Los Ángeles. He explores and captures the city’s stories that are hidden in plain sight. He is the author of the chapbook Concrete Paradise (2018) from Finishing Line Press. Dunlap is the winner of the 2018 Jeff Marks Memorial Poetry Prize from december magazine judged by former Los Ángeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez. His poems and book reviews have been published in Angel City Review, CCM-Entropy, California Quarterly and Dryland, among others. He has an article forthcoming in the June issue of L.A. Parent. He runs the blog site www.losangelesliterature.wordpress.com, a resource to explore L.A.’s vast literary culture.

Please join us to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Red Hen Press with a poetry reading event featuring four Red Hen Press poets:

Katherine Coles is a poet and educator who served from 2006-2012 as Utah’s third poet laureate, and currently serves as inaugural director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute and the co-director of the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature.

Matty Layne Glasgow is the author of the poetry collection, deciduous queen, selected by Richard Blanco as the winner of the Benjamin Saltman Award and forthcoming from Red Hen Press in 2019.

Kim Dower is the author of four poetry collections, all from Red Hen Press: Air Kissing on Mars (2010), Slice of Moon (2013), Last Train to the Missing Planet (2016), and her new book, Sunbathing on Tyrone Powers’ Grave (2019).

Jessy Randall is the author of the poetry collections: Suicide Hotline Hold (2016), There Was an Old Woman (2015), Injecting Dreams into Cows (2012), A Day in Boyland (2007).

The readings will be accompanied by jeweler Nicole Foos’ talk on “Stories from Stones.”
