Los Angeles Literature Events: 04/15/24 – 04/21/24

It’s literary festival season in the Los Angeles Literary Community. Next weekend is the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 6pm Saturday and 10am – 5pm Sunday. There are plenty of other events as well. Local writers reading this week are: Benin Lemus, Nina Revoyr, Nailah Porter, Sean Hill, Taz Ahmed, Myriam Gurba and Brenda Vaca, among others. Los Angeles Literature Events: 04/17/23 – 04/23/23

An especially busy week in the Los Ángeles literary community. There are two festivals, the 28th Annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at USC (Saturday and Sunday) and the 1st Annual Neenach Poetry Festival near Palmdale-Lancaster (Saturday). Local writers reading and signing at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books are: Susan Straight, Alex Espinoza, Donna Spriijt-Metz, Erin Aubry Kaplan, Shane Murray and Lynda La Rose, among others. Virtual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books: Stories and Ideas 2021 – Online Fiction Event

Join the 26th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, again offered virtually, from April 17 through April 20! Many literary events will be offered, and tickets are FREE!

LA Times’ Main Stage Event features Richard Thompson, in conversation with RJ Smith, who will present and discuss his memoir, Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice 1967-1975.

Richard Thompson is aninternational and longtime beloved musical legend, known for his brilliant songwriting, his extraordinary guitar playing, and his haunting voice. In this long-awaited memoir the British folk musician takes us back to the 1960s, a period of great change and creativity—both for him and the world at large. Thompson is the author of Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice, 1967-1975.

RJ Smith has been a senior editor at Los Angeles Magazine. a contributor to Blender, a columnist for Village Voice, a staff writer for Spin, and a writer for many  journals, His book, The One: The Life and Music of James Brown, was among the  New York Times’ “One Hundred Notable Books of 2012.” He is the interviewer for this event.

Indre Viskontas & How Music Can Make You Better via CalTech Live: Behind the Book – Online Event           

Indre Viskontas combines a passion for music with scientific curiosity. She is a Professor of Sciences and Humanities at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of San Francisco, is a working opera singer, and serves as the Creative Director of Pasadena Opera.

Dr. Viskontas will be interviewed by Maya Jasper White, CalTech’s Director of Chamber music, about her book, How Music Can Make You Better, where she investigates what music is, and how it can change us for the better—from deep in our neurons to across our entire society.

Magical Feminism: An Editorial Discussion via Electric Literature – Zoom Online Event      

Halimah Marcus, executive editor of Electric Literature talks to Marie-Helene Bertino (Parakeet, 2 a.m. at the Cat’s Pajamas, Safe as Houses) and Elissa Washuta (White Magic, My Body Is a Book of Rules,, Shapes of Native Nonfiction) about coping with trauma and subverting expectations at the intersection of magic and reality. They will discuss how magic works in practice and as a rhetorical device in fiction. Q&A will follow.
