A bit late, but here is Los Angeles Literature’s 8th Annual Los Ángeles Writers Publish list. It’s been a year filled with release parties, notably from new local presses–El Martillo Press and Riot of Roses–dedicated to publishing voices and women of color, as well as World Stage Press and others. Also, individuals published pieces in journals, magazines and newspapers, both big and small and in-between. 2020 has been one shit show of a year. Especially for Los Ángeles. Kobe died in January. The pandemic hit Los Ángeles County harder than anywhere else in California. The election. However, with businesses shut down and public gatherings banned, the city’s literary community quickly adapted and created community and continued to amplify voices virtually. At the same time writers continued to publish powerful literature.

Without Lewis MacAdams, an avowed poet, Los Angeles might have completely forgotten the river that birthed the city. “There would not be a movement to save or restore the L.A. river without him,” said Joe Edmiston, executive director of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. “He was able to provide some romance, some poetry, some vision that you didn’t see.”

The Los Angeles Times Book Prizes were announced on Twitter today. Among the winners in 14 categories, who submitted acceptance speech videos, were Steph Cha, Ben Lerner, Namwalli Serpell, George Packer, Maria Popova and Walter Mosley. Marlon James won the inaugural Ray Bradbury Prize for Science Fiction, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction.

We have seen over the last week, artists and musicians posting videos of them singing, performing or reading from their work or livestreaming their performances and readings. It’s a chance to keep people connected to each other during a time of isolation and sickness. It’s also a chance at self care, something to enjoy and take one’s mind off the worries and stress of the Coronavirus and all its effects.
