Los Angeles Literature Events: 06/24/24 – 06/30/24

Pride Month is coming to a close, but there are still chances to see local LGBTQIA+ writers read this week and for the rest of the year. There is also the return of the 3rd Culver City Book Festival at Wende Museum from 10am – 4pm. The festival showcases the work of local authors, publishers, journals, and literary non-profits. Local writers reading this week are: Orange County Poet Laureate Gustavo Hernandez, Gina Duran, Jonathan Parks-Ramage, Teresa Mei Chuc, Conney D. It’s the third week of Pride Month and this week to celebrate the L.A. Poet Society is hosting the 4th Annual Queer Writers Festival. Landlord Forcing Cellar Door Books Out of Their Lease Due to Drag Queen Storytime

Cellar Door Books opened 10 years ago when there were no independent bookstores in Riverside, CA. Nestled into the Eastside of the Canyon Crest Towne Center, near Canyon Crest Dr., the bookstore opened before their shelves where full. The community was eager for a new bookstore and once the doors opened owner Linda Nurick said, “people came in almost as if they were going to find a book they wanted to buy simply to support us.”

World Literature Book Club via West Valley Regional Library, LAPL – Online Event

This Book Club hosts a discussion of the world’s best short stories. All selections are from The Best Short Stories 2021-The O. Henry Prize Winners, edited by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

This month’s selections are:

Nov. 7 – Antediluvian by Ben Hinshaw

Nov. 14 – Grief’s Garden by Caroline Albertine Minor

Nov. 21 – To the Dogs by Jianan Qian

Nov. 28 – Color and Light by Sally Rooney  

This group meets every Monday morning (excluding holidays).

This program is repeated at 2 pm by Woodland Hills Branch Library.
