Indre Viskontas & How Music Can Make You Better via CalTech Live: Behind the Book – Online Event           

Indre Viskontas combines a passion for music with scientific curiosity. She is a Professor of Sciences and Humanities at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of San Francisco, is a working opera singer, and serves as the Creative Director of Pasadena Opera.

Dr. Viskontas will be interviewed by Maya Jasper White, CalTech’s Director of Chamber music, about her book, How Music Can Make You Better, where she investigates what music is, and how it can change us for the better—from deep in our neurons to across our entire society.

Join author Shannon Kenny Carbonell, in conversation with Nestor Carbonell,to hear her discuss her book, All Is Not Lost.

Shannon Kenny Carbonell’s book, All Is Not Lost, is the story of what happened when one woman set aside a lifelong dream in favor of her kids, only to find herself battling her own ego and unfulfilled ambition. When her family relocated to Oahu, Hawaii during the shooting of the TV show LOST, she found herself as lost as the characters/survivors, and find a way to reconcile her growing feeling of failure and sudden loss of herself, This is her journey.

Behind the Book: Blake Hill-Saya via CalTechLive, Beckman Auditorium– Online Event     

Join author Blake Hill-Saya for a discussion of her biography of her great-great grandfather, Arron McDuffie Moore: An African American Physician, Educator and Founder of Durham’s Black Wall Street, in this new CalTech Behind the Book event. The author will be interviewed by Monique Thomas, Program Coordinator in the CalTech Center for Inclusion & Diversity.

Blake Hill-Saya is a classical musician and creative writer living in Los Angeles. Born the biracial child of two literature professors, she is the CEO of Tenacity Communications in Los Angeles.

This new series presents conversations with authors who explore the intersection of arts, science, and society through the lens of their family histories. Behind the Book events are free and open to the public. Vroman’s Bookstore is a partner for the series and has copies of the books available for purchase.
