There are many independent bookstores throughout Southern California. 51 by my last count. From Fullerton to Sylmar to Venice to Boyle Heights to Leimert Park and Pomona and everywhere in-between. They all need our support.
Atelier Manferdini & Portraits and Landscapes at SCI-Arc College & University
Christine Carter & The New Adolescence at Polytechnic School, Pasadena
Father Gregory Boyle at Cal State University Los Angeles
The door of Los Angeles’ newest bookstore is propped open on a quiet section of Hollywood Boulevard, the front window displaying books on a handmade wooden bookshelf. Inside the front room, you’ll find more books and merchandise below a neon light thought bubble and a sign that reads, “I still haven’t figured out all the people I am.” The staff is friendly, warm and eager to listen. In the back room, separated by curtains, art hangs on the yellow walls. The large space is waiting to be used by Not a Cult, an independent publisher turned bookstore.
Friday night at Book Show in Highland Park was a goodbye of sorts. Local poets from places such as Santa Clarita, Mar Vista and Long Beach gathered there as if moths drawn to a flame. Drawn to share their experiences. They’d been coming to Book Show on the third Friday of the month for the past two years to share in community at Friday Night Poetry: They’re Just Words, hosted by L.A. poet Ingrid Calderon-Collins.
