Author Terry Miles, in conversation with author Cory Doctorow, will present and discuss his new book, Rabbits.

Terry Miles’s new book depicts how a deadly underground game might just be altering reality itself in this new adventure set in the world of the hit Rabbits podcast. Rabbits is a mysterious alternate reality game so vast it uses the entire world as its canvas. Since the game started in 1959, ten iterations have appeared and nine winners declared. The deeper you get, the more dangerous the game becomes, and when K—a Rabbits obsessive—enters the eleventh round, the fate of the entire universe is at stake.

Author and Bloomberg News writer Brad Stone, in conversation with Nick Bilton, will discuss his new book, Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire.

Amazon Unbound is an unvarnished picture of Amazon’s unprecedented growth, and its billionaire founder Jeff Bezos, revealing the most important business story of our time.  Brad Stone is also the author of The Everything Store, Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon and The upstarts: Uber, Airbnb, and the Battle for the New Silicon Valley.

Almost ten years ago the author captured the rise of Amazon, an internet pioneer quietly changing the way we shop online. Author Raakhee Mirchandani and illustrator Holly Hatam, will read and discuss their new book, Hair Twins.

Hair Twins is the story of a Sikh father and daughter with a special bond. They proudly celebrate and share a family tradition concerning how they care for their hair and their choices of hairstyles they select from each morning. In this charming picture book we learn that the daughter’s favorite style is the tight bun on the top of her head, which is like the joora her father wears ev3ery day under his turban. They call this their hair twin look!

Wesley Brown, with Douglas Kearney, & Tragic Magic via Skylight Books – Online Event   

Wesley Brown, in conversation with poet Douglas Kearney, will read and discuss his book, Tragic Magic.

Wesley Brown is the author of three novels, a collection of short stories, Dance of the Infidels, and four produced plays. Tragic Magic is the story of Melvin Ellington, a.k.a. Mouth, a Black, twenty-something ex-college radical who has just been released from a five-year prison stretch after being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. The author structures this first person tale around Ellington’s first day on the outside, haunted by a past that drives him to make sense of choices leading up to this day.

Originally published in 1978, and edited by Toni Morrison during her time at Random House, this Of the Diaspora edition of Tragic Magic features a new introduction by author Wesley Brown.

Speaker Series: Meet Lynne Thompson, New Poet Laureate of Los Angelesvia The Ebell – Online Event 

Lynne Thompson, since being appointed our new Poet Laureate in 2021 by Mayor Eric Garcetti, will share her path to this two year appointment, and discuss her writing and literary works.

Thompson is the author of three books of poetry: Start with a Small Guitar, Beg No Pardon, and Fretwork. She serves on the boards of Cave Canem and the Los Angeles Review of Books, and is chair of the Scripps College Board of Trustees. She has received numerous awards, and other recent work is forthcoming in New York Quarterly, New England Review, the 202 Best American Poetry, among others.

Denise Hamilton & Contributors & Speculative Los Angeles via Beverly Hills Public Library, BHPL – Virtual Event                                                              

Editor and author Denise Hamilton, with contributors Francesca Lia Block, Lisa Morton, and Luis J. Rodriguez, will presents selections of their new work from the debut title in a new city-based anthology series, Speculative Los Angeles.

L.A. native Denise Hamilton is the author of seven crime novels, and is editor of Speculative Los Angeles (2021), She is editor of the bestselling Los Angeles Noir 2, and is a former LA Times journalist. Her next novel is a work of speculative fiction set in Los Angeles.

Francesca Lia Block is the author of more than 25 acclaimed and widely translated books, as well as short stories, essays and poems. She lives, writes, and teaches creative writing in Los Angeles.

Lisa Morton is a screenwriter, author of nonfiction books, and prose writer, and a six-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award. She is the author of four novels, and over 150 short stories.

Luis J. Rodriguez has published 16 books of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, children’s books and essays. Best-known for his memoir Always Running, he has also been a print and radio journalist, written plays and movie scripts, and worked as a script consultant on three TV shows. He served as Los Angeles’s official Poet Laureate for two terms.
