Join us to meet author Rachel Howzell Hall, in conversation with author and critic Steph Cha, who will read and discuss her suspense novel, They All Fall Down. This stand-alone novel brings seven sinners to a private island for a reckoning that will leave you breathless.

Delighted by a surprise invitation, Miriam Macy sails off to a luxurious private island off the coast of Mexico with six other strangers. But they have all been brought to the remote island under false pretenses—and they all harbor a secret.  They are trapped in paradise and strange accidents stir suspicions, as one by one… they all fall down.

Join us to hear Maria Ure, founder and director of Spanish in Action, for a Story Time in Spanish. Her approach is radically different from teaching methods commonly seen in school settings, as she personally sits down with the kids and delivers her lessons through song. It’s her innate gift for teaching and ability to create beautiful songs for each lesson that set her apart as a teacher and as a school.

Spoken word is more popular than ever these days, with a seemingly endless array of live performances that pop up in a wide variety of formats and settings in the Los Angeles area. But what used to be a mainly underground pursuit — in which obsessive wordsmiths parsed and divined the arcane properties, hidden meanings and cryptic allusions buried in each loaded syllable of oblique poetry before a small crowd of like-minded true believers — has long since turned into a fairly mainstream spectator sport.

Please join us for Conchas y Café, a program offered by the nonprofit, DSTL Arts, a 10-week creative writing class, offered in English and Spanish for adults of all ages Participants learn new techniques in poetry, storytelling, and zine-making throughout the 10-week series, and also have the opportunity to publish and present their work in the Conchas y Café Zine, a quarterly anthology of writing produced through this program. A public reading and release party celebrates the culmination of each series

Please join us to meet and hear from two authors receiving the Horace Mann Upstander Awards, given yearly to celebrate authors who publish fictional stories that encourage activism on the part of the protagonist. The authors will discuss their work, receive their awards from Antioch University Los Angeles, and the presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. For ages: 10-adult.

The Summer of Owen Todd, by Tony Abbott is the winner of the Annual Book Award.  Mordicai Gerstein is the Lifetime Achievement Award winner for his commitment to activism, and particularly for his latest book, The Boy and the Whale.

Restless Souls, by Dan Sheehan & The Concrete, by Daniel Abbott, will be presented and discussed in conversation with Melissa X. Golebiowski of Literary Hub.

This month we are discussing Luis Alberto Urrea’s new book, The House of Broken Angels, at our Evening Book Club event. From this Pulitzer Prize finalist we discover a powerful and unforgettable portrait of one Mexican American Family and the American Dream. In his final days, beloved and ailing patriarch Miguel Angel de la Cruz has summoned his entire clan for one last legendary birthday party. But just before the date, his 100-year old mother dies herself, leading a farewell double-header in a single weekend. Among the guests is Big Angel’s half-brother, known as Little Angel, half gringo, who has not actually shared their life, although they have shared a father. This complex family reminds us of what it means to be first generation and live two lives across one border.

The World Stage and Literary Black Los Ángeles

25532286_728380960698600_6061884366904609104_oIt begins every Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Early arrivals step to the mic, sharing a poem in progress to receive much needed feedback. Then they provide feedback to others. V. Kali, author of Hymn (World Stage Press), sits next to the donation box and front entrance and welcomes attendees as they arrive. As host, V. has been a warm presence each week for years, her long beautiful natural hair a thing of legend. As the crowd grows, the list of open mic readers expands before the feature grabs everyone’s attention. Murmurs of “mmm hmm” and “that’s right” arise from the crowd. After, it’s the community-the open mic readers’-turn at the mic. It’s their chance to bring down the house.
