FROM: Riverside Press-Enterprise
There’s a common myth that “real” writers feel like writing all the time. Sometimes we feed the myth by over-explaining gaps in our creative activities or output. Sharing how writing works or doesn’t work can be fascinating. For me, this can also be a counterpart to anxious impulses: Addressing anticipated critics — real or imagined — or playing out arguments on an internal loop after someone has voluntold me what they think I should be creating.

Sunday was the first time I attended Slow Lightning Lit’s open mic at The Book Jewel in Westchester. The open mic, hosted by poet Peggy Dobreer, began online as a place for people to hold space for each other and connect by sharing their voice during the Pandemic.

FROM: Iliad Bookshop
The Iliad’s longtime employee Bob Johnson passed away on January 24, 2022, of a massive heart attack. Bob was much loved for his sense of humor and his kindness; mention to him a favorite show or artist, and he’d probably come back in a few days with a DVD or tape for you. Bob loved (in no particular order) H. L. Mencken, the Boston Celtics, fried clam strips, cats, conspiracy theories surrounding Kennedy’s assassination, Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda, old t.v. detective series, Edward Gorey, Broadway musicals, and pizza (preferably with sausage). Before working at the Iliad, Bob had been a musical theater actor, a joke writer, and a seedy movie theater projectionist.

Vroman’s Live: Local Author Day with David W. Reed & Lin Nelson Benedek via Vroman’s – Online Event
Join us to hear local authors David W. Reed & Lin Nelson Benedek discuss their new books: Uphill and into the Wind and Singing Lessons, respectively.
David W. Reed’s Uphill and into the Wind is set in 1973, when our nation was torn apart by the Vietnam War, and the massacre of unarmed students at Kent State. Disenchanted with his future, he author set out with two new friends to cross the United States with just their bicycles and cameras to truly see America. They get more than they bargained for, with menacing animals, extreme weather, and astonishing encounters. Through it all they are changed forever, in ways they did not expect, by their long journey into the unknown.
Lin Nelson Benedek’s Singing Lessons is a poetic collection that is both grand and intimate. Michelle Bitting calls it a “…sumptuous repast for ear and imagination as Benedek pulls us in close to her contemplated world of things and sings us through.”
