The Book Writers Group meets every first Monday of the month at the Robertson Branch Library. Are you writing a book and looking for feedback? Need deadlines to help you reach your writing goals? Then this is the group for you!

For each meeting, please bring 5-10 double-spaced  pages of writing to share with the group. Every member will have time to present his/her writing and receive constructive feedback.

Depending on the size of the group, each person will receive 10-15 minutes of time to share and  receive feedback.

Our weekly Conchas y Café Zine – Bilingual Community Writing Workshops are free and open to adults.  This program offered by DSTL Arts, provides a 12-week creative writing workshop for adults of all ages. Participants learn more about creative writing, poetry, publishing, zine-making, and more, while receiving writing exercises and feedback on their work. Participants also have the opportunity to publish and  present their work in a zine of writing produced through the program. A public reading and release party celebrates the culmination of each 12-week series.

Author Amy Waldman discusses and signs her new novel, A Door in the Earth at Diane Leslie’s Book Club..

This book is a about an idealistic young Afghan-American woman trapped between her ideals and the complicated truth. Galvanized by a book she reads in college by humanitarian Gideon Crane, sensitive student Parveen makes a pilgrimage to a remote village in the land of her birth to make a difference, only to find the many fabrications in the memoir and decide where her loyalties lie. The author reported form Afghanistan for the New York Times after 9/11, and has created a taut, propulsive novel about power, perspective, and idealism to reveal complicated truths in our living history.

The Laguna College of Art + Design’s (LCAD) Leslie Power Library Presents: Distinguished Authors Lecture Series, with:

Patty Seyburn has previously published five collections of poems, her most recent release being Threshold Delivery (Finishing line Press 2019). She is a proud professor at CSU Long Beach.

Andrew Tonkavich edits the West Coast literary magazine, Santa Monica Review, and hosts Bibliocracy, a weekly books show on listener-supported Pacifica Radio’s KPFK (90.7) in Southern California. He is a regular contributor to the OC Weekly and is co-editor of Orange County: A Literary Field Guide (Hey Day 2017). He teaches composition at UC Irvine.

Building Literary Community at the Small Press Book Festival

20190927_172515Last Saturday, the first annual Small Press Book Festival took place at the Wende Museum of the Cold War, in Culver City. It was a day to celebrate, promote and connect with Los Ángeles’ independent publishing community. Founded by Mark Lipman, poet and publisher of local independent press Vagabond, the Festival’s “goal is to promote and foster communication and the diversity of voices through literature and the arts as an integral part of the on-going work of building” literary community and community as a whole.
