Los Ángeles writer Cassandra Lane has been a writer since she turned 11 and told her mother. Since, she’s been studying and honing her craft as a journalist and editor, teaching others how to write and read deeply and crafting her own stories. Growing up poor and Black in the South—the land, the dialects, the people, the stories, the spirituality—influenced her deeply and shaped her as a writer.

Reading probably isn’t the first form of entertainment most people associate with Los Angeles. But the city actually has a long history of fantastic independent bookstores. Bibliophiles in search of their new favorite will not have a hard time finding their happy ending in the stacks of general neighborhood gems—complete with shop cats, signed bestsellers, and coffee bars—or in shops that specialize in specific genres like horror, food/cooking, or romance. Writers Week to honor three U.S. poet laureates

The 44th annual Writers Week hosted by UC Riverside begins next week, Feb. 16-19. It's free and open to the public.

Three U.S. poet laureates will close out this year’s Writers Week, California’s longest-running free literary festival, held by UC Riverside for the 44th year. Rita Dove, Joy Harjo, and Juan Felipe Herrera will each be honored with the annual Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) – UCR Department of Creative Writing Lifetime Achievement Award during a special closing event at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 19.
