In July 1962, following in the tradition of Indigenous workers from Nova Scotia, a Mi’kmaq family arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Joe will remain distraught by his sister’s disappearance for years to come.
In Maine, a young girl named Norma grows up as the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant, her mother frustratingly overprotective. William J. Mann & Black Dahlia: Murder, Monsters, and Madness in Midcentury Hollywoodat Book Soup – In-Person Event
William J. Mann will present and discuss Black Dahlia: Murder, Monsters, and Madness in Midcentury Hollywood.
Illuminating and captivating, New York Times bestselling author of Tinseltown and Bogart offers the first definitive account of the Black Dahlia murder—the most famous unsolved true crime case in American history—which humanizes the victim and situates the notorious case within an anxious, postwar country grappling with new ideas, demographics, and technologies.
The brutal murder of Elizabeth Short—better known as the Black Dahlia—in 1947 has been in the public consciousness for nearly eighty years, yet no serious study of the crime has ever been published.
Short has been mischaracterized as a wayward sex worker or vagabond, and—like the seductive femme fatales of film noir—responsible for and perhaps deserving of her fate. William J. Mann, however, is interested in the truth. His extensive research reveals her as a young woman with curiosity and drive, who leveraged what little agency postwar society gave her to explore the world, defying draconian postwar gender expectations to settle down, marry, and have children. It’s time to reexamine the woman who became known as the Black Dahlia.
Mann deftly sifts through the sensationalized journalism, preconceived notions, myths, and misunderstandings surrounding the case to uncover the truth about Elizabeth Short like no book before. The Black Dahlia promises to be the definitive study about the most famous unsolved case in American history.
William J. Mann is a New York Times bestselling author of The Contender: The Story of Marlon Brando, for which he was granted access to Brando’s private estate archive, as well as Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn (named a Notable Book of the Year by the Times); Hello Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Streisand (praised by USA Today for its “meticulous research and insightful analysis”); Edge of Midnight: The Life of John Schlesinger, for which he worked closely with the Oscar-winning director; and The Black Dahlia: Murder, Monsters, and Madness in Midcentury America. His book Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood won the Edgar Allan Poe Award. Mann is a professor of film and popular culture at Central Connecticut State University.

John Sayles & Crucible at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
John Sayles will discuss and sign his historical novel Crucible, about Henry Ford—the Elon Musk of his day—and his attempt to rule not only an automotive empire but the rambunctious city of Detroit. It is an epic tale ranging from the 1920s through the second World War, featuring violent labor disputes, misbegotten jungle expeditions, a tragic race riot, and the gestapo tactics of Ford’s private army.
Already the gateway for illegal Canadian liquor during Prohibition, the Motor City becomes a crucible for American class conflict during the Great Depression, with an army of laid off Ford workers drifting into the ranks of the burgeoning union movement—Henry Ford’s worst nightmare. To keep the hundreds of thousands still employed by him in thrall, the man who was formerly ‘America’s favorite tycoon’ recruits black laborers migrating from the deep South to serve as ‘strike insurance’, and gives Harry Bennett, pugnacious as he is diminutive, free reign over the legion of barroom brawlers and ex-cons who make up the company’s ‘Security Department’.
The Model T mogul has also bought a sizable chunk of Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest, vowing to grow his own rubber for tires, but stubbornly refusing to include a botanist in his troop of would-be jungle tamers. As a series of biological plagues descend on the Fordlandia plantation, the racial melting pot he has created in Detroit begins to boil over, and not even the Sage of Dearborn can control the forces that have been unleashed.
The novel’s cast—Ford workers black and white and their families, young radicals, cynical newsmen, gangsters, Brazilian rubber tappers, cameos from boxer Joe Louis and muralist Diego Rivera—create the tapestry of differing points of view that John Sayles has become famous for, the events portrayed fundamental to the country we live in today.
John Sayles is an independent filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and novelist. He has twice been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and once for the National Book Award. He has written eight novels, including, most recently, Jamie MacGillivray and To Save the Man.

For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident. West Hollywood Library’s LGBTQ+ Book Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month to discuss literary works of relevance and interest to the LGBTQ+ community.
Please contact the library to borrow a print copy of the book. eBook is available through Libby app/OverDrive.
Summary provided by the publisher:
The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh’s masterpiece—a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire. Through the story of Charles Ryder’s entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities. At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh’s early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

Phy-Sci Book Club: Best American Science and Nature Writing 2025 at Cellar Door Bookstore, Riverside – In-Person Event
Join us to discuss Best American Science and Nature Writing 2025 by editor Susan Orlean.
“The best science and nature writing—which these stories represent—reminds us of the wide world and our connection to it, and the multitude of ways we make our place in it,” writes Susan Orlean in her introduction. This year’s collection masterfully guides us through exotic locations and groundbreaking research, leading us to consider complex and utterly fascinating questions about the world. How does it feel to camp in one of the hottest places on Earth? Is the ability to recognize and remember faces a sign of intelligence? What does it mean for a species to be wild or invasive—are city pigeons and rats less deserving than the coyotes that recently wandered down from Westchester? Encompassing the strangeness and, at times, severity of our world, these stories are urgent, vital, and ultimately inspiring. As Orlean eloquently observes, “Science keeps unlocking mysteries, revealing secrets, helping us heal. And as imperiled as nature seems, it remains amply, gloriously gorgeous: The world is still full of beauty.”

Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club: The Memory Police at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event
The Village Well Book Club offshoot, the Sci-fi Fantasy Book Club! To the Tolkien nerds, SJM stans, and R.F. Kuang enjoyers, this group is for you! On the fourth Tuesday of every month, we will come together and discuss a story that falls within the realms of either science fiction or fantasy (or sometimes both!). To join our emailing list, reach out to events@villagewell.com. Hope to see ya there!
This month’s pick is The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa.
A haunting Orwellian novel about the terrors of state surveillance, from the acclaimed author of The Housekeeper and the Professor.
On an unnamed island, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses. Most of the inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few able to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. When a young writer discovers that her editor is in danger, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards, and together they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past. Powerful and provocative, The Memory Police is a stunning novel about the trauma of loss.

Shari Dunbar Dover, with Nada Jones, & The Book of Madern Ceremony: Practices to Mark Life’s Big & Small Moments at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Shari Dunbar Dover, in conversation with Nada Jones, will discuss The Book of Madern Ceremony: Practices to Mark Life’s Big & Small Moments.
Joined by Alexandra Poer, the stylist for the book!
For those seeking connection and meaning in their everyday lives, an easy-to-follow, beautiful, and inspiring manual on performing ceremonies for all occasions and milestones, from life transitions and family gatherings to holidays and seasonal changes.
For as long as humans have existed, we have performed ceremonies to mark occasions and personal transitions to create meaning and connect with the world, ourselves, and each other. Though ceremony is still a cornerstone of many cultures around the globe, modern rituals are largely confined to just three events: birth, marriage, and death. Without our ancestors’ sense of frequent and intentional ceremony, we have lost the power to bring meaning to our everyday lives. The Book of Modern Ceremony is here to change that.
Written by sociologist and ceremonialist Shari Dunbar Boyer, this book shares more than 30 ceremonies that can be easily incorporated into contemporary life. There are rituals for life transitions, calendar changes, and personal growth. Some celebrate familiar events, like the Untraditional Birthday or Vow Renewal ceremonies, but others mark important milestones that we often neglect, such as moving to a new home or entering menopause. And of course, there are seasonal rituals for every solstice, equinox, and moon cycle.
Presented in easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions, The Book of Modern Ceremony encourages readers to leave behind the daily stressors of life and connect more deeply with themselves, their loved ones, and their own spirituality.

Book Launch: Lachi & Nic Novicki & I Identify as Blind at Reparations Club – In-Person Event
Join Rep Club for a discussion on I Identify As Blind by author and artist Lachi in conversation with Nic Novicki.
Lachi is an award-winning singer and leader who awakens the world to this truth: Disability has long shaped our culture and is an identity worth brazenly celebrating. In this book, Lachi welcomes readers into the vibrant world of Disability Culture.
I Identify as Blind pulses with energy. Through magnetic storytelling, pop-culture deep dives, and historical insight, Lachi challenges mainstream views on disability with humor and heart. Because visionaries with disabilities have always driven progress.
The book features trailblazing figures like Senator Tammy Duckworth, Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte, Microsoft executive Jenny Lay-Flurrie, and so many more. Lachi even takes readers behind the scenes at Coldplay concerts, since after Chris Martin developed tinnitus, he transformed his concerts into some of the most accessible in the world. Each story reframes disability not as a deficit but as a wellspring of collective strength. And inventions created for people with disabilities benefit everyone—from audiobooks to curb cuts to the internet. (Vint Cerf helped develop the first commercial email service, because he had trouble communicating by phone.)
With punchy humor and radical honesty, Lachi dismantles stereotypes and builds a new narrative of Disability identity. I Identify as Blind is an invitation to a cultural movement—welcoming everyone to celebrate disabilities as a source of power and pride.
Come for the laughs, stay for the mic drops.
Lachi is an award-winning recording artist, public speaker, and the first openly disabled National Trustee of the Recording Academy. She is the CEO of RAMPD (Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities), which has partnered with Netflix and Live Nation. Named a USA Today Woman of the Year and a “dedicated foot soldier for disability pride” by Forbes, Lachi hosted the PBS American Masters series Renegades, has appeared on Good Morning America, and has spoken at The White House. She lives in New York City.
Nic Novicki is a comedian, actor, and producer who has performed on 6 continents, including several tours through Armed Forces Entertainment, performing for troops. His television credits include: Boardwalk Empire, Bad Thoughts, The Good Doctor, The Sopranos, Loudermilk, Alone Together, Gotham Comedy Live, Jack and Triumph, The Neighbors, Austin and Alley, Private Practice, Drop Dead Diva. He has appeared in several movies, including: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Marry Me, L!fe Happens, November Rule, The Last 5 Years, Boston Girls, Breaking Wind, Dead Ant, and the upcoming BitterSweet. Sci Fi Story Club: “Six Thought Experiments Concerning Computation” by Rudy Ruckert via Edendale Library, LAPL – Online Event
Join us on Zoom for the next gathering of the Sci Fi Story Club! We’ll be discussing Rudy Rucker’s “Six Thought Experiments Concerning the Nature of Computation” from his collection Mad Professor: The Uncollected Short Stories.
A shy Berkeley chemical engineer invents sentient paint that becomes a hit with East Bay hot rodders, a videogame designer accidentally unlocks the code to the cosmos while landscaping a virtual golf course, a yoga teacher discovers infinite chakras that become helpful extra selves. Vivid and uncanny in their own right, these six mini-stories were originally written as chapter intros for Rudy Rucker’s book on computation to illustrate different aspects of the topic. Rucker is a widely published computer scientist and mathematician who has taught at several universities, and along with William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, was one of the originators of cyberpunk – a sci-fi subgenre with an aesthetic of “high-tech/low-life”. He is best known for the novels in his Ware Tetralogy, the first two of which (Software and Wetware) won the Philip K. Dick Award for best science fiction novel in 1983 and 1988.

Special Author Event: Kate Santoro & Truth on the Run at pages: a bookstore – In-Person Event
Kate Santoro will present and discuss Truth on the Run: a Memoir.
Over the course of 23,083 miles, Kate Santoro has circled the Earth on foot-through marathons, misadventures, and moments that nearly broke her. But this isn’t a book about how to run a marathon. It’s about what happens when life becomes one.
Truth on the Run is a raw, funny, gut-punch of a memoir that chases down truth through heartbreak, motherhood, wildfires, near-death accidents, and the finish line of the Boston Marathon bombing. From East Coast roots to West Coast upheaval, Kate’s journey is laced with grit, grief, resilience, and unexpected grace.
With sharp humor and searing honesty, she invites you into a story not about winning-but about enduring. About showing up breathless, blistered, and stripped to the core-and still choosing to move forward.
Whether you’re navigating loss, rebuilding after disaster, or just trying to remember where you left your joy, Truth on the Run will remind you that the run doesn’t save you. You save yourself. One gritty, grace-filled step at a time.
Kate Santoro is a lifelong Bostonian who now calls Manhattan Beach home. A wildfire evacuee from the Pacific Palisades, Kate is a mother of five, a health coach, and a 30-time marathoner and coach. Her writing weaves running, resilience, family, and loss into stories of perseverance and hope. Pages Bookstore played a quiet but meaningful role in inspiring her to write this book—serving as a place of refuge, reflection, and community during a season of transition.

Ticketed: Sean Mortimer, with Michelle Steilen, & Misfit: A Survival Guide, at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Join us to hear Sean Mortimer, in conversation with Michelle Steilen, discuss Misfit: A Survival Guide.
The ultimate guide to recognizing untapped potential by celebrating imperfection. Learn to take the path less travelled with direction from misfit guides like Tony Hawk, Mark Mothersbaugh, Michelle “Estrojen” Steilen, Shepard Fairey, and many more.
“You’re weird.” “Sorry.” “No, that was a compliment.” —Donnie Darko
When the whole world appears designed to make you just fit in, Misfit urges you to listen to your oddball self and seek out an original path.
Will it be easy? Predictable? Understood and supported by the masses? No.
But will it be dynamic, full of wild expression, and fill you with a joyful sense of discovery? Yes.
Sean Mortimer—a celebrated writer who started as a skateboarder alongside Tony Hawk—collaborates with internationally acclaimed misfits whose unconventional heat has warped how the world perceives music, sports and art. These iconic nonconformists did not start out as the celebrated renegades we see today. Each pushed through the initial pain and isolation of social rejection, overcoming self-doubt with erratic experimentation to reach a destination overflowing with conviction, gratitude, and their own version of success.

Eco-Horror Book Launch: Allison Mick & Humboldt Cut at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event
Join us for the launch of the brand new horror novel Humboldt Cut by Allison Mick, in conversation with Madison Shepard.
Jasmine Bay is a nurse for an Oakland mental health facility, battling her own demons, caught in a spiral of suicidal despair. Estranged from her brother James and his wife Tilly, who was once her best friend, Jas has chosen self-isolation to protect herself—even if it means denying herself a hopeful future with co-worker and potential love interest Henry Lewis.
When her godmother dies, Jas returns to Redceder for the funeral, a logging town where her grandfather William Whipple made a living deforesting the countryside, ripping and raping apart nature’s very foundations for corporate profits. As trees fell to axes and chainsaws, so did dozens of lumberjacks, falling prey to the dangers of their job—and to the ecoterrorism of Jas’s grandfather who was lynched for his crimes. And buried in the haunted woods are even more dark secrets perpetrated by Jas’s family. Unnatural acts giving birth to entities made of human flesh and petrified bark, seeking to avenge the devastation that ravaged their land. It is an inheritance that threatens to consume the remnants of Jas’s family, and her very sanity…
Celebrated comedy writer Allison Mick’s Humboldt Cut exposes the traumatic costs of environmental destruction in an energetic, darkly humorous horror adventure that combines the botanical terrors of VanderMeer’s Annihilation and the psychological horror of The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones with a dash of Jordan Peele.
Allison Mick is the author of Humboldt Cut. Mick is a Los Angeles-based writer, comedian, visual artist, voice actor, and mixed-race supremacist. She trained in the San Francisco/Oakland comedy scene and is originally from the Great Lakes.
Madison Shepard is a Los Angeles based writer, actor, producer, and stand-up comedian.
Mick will be joined by writer and comedian Madison Shepard for a short reading, a Q&A, and more in celebration of her debut novel. Drop by for a cozy, funny, and spooky evening!

At Skylight: Rachel Taff, with Ruth Madievsky, & Papercut at Skylight – In-Person Event
Rachel Taff, in conversation with Ruth Madievsky, will discuss Papercut.
A page-turning suspense debut about a woman infamous for escaping a cult as a teenager, who finds her future threatened when dangerous secrets come back to haunt her—perfect for fans of Jessica Knoll and The Girls.
Everybody knows the story. Nobody knows the truth.
Lucy Golden is a true-crime icon, infamous for the murder she committed while escaping a California cult twenty years ago. But as everyone in Los Angeles knows, fame is fleeting, and Lucy and her story are always just one news cycle away from obscurity. Not to mention, she’s fending off a stalker and moderating an icy feud between her acclaimed photographer mother and her scandalous rock star sister. Worst of all, online trolls are asking increasingly threatening questions about the legendary crime. Questions that could tear her life apart.
So, when a hotshot documentarian makes her case the subject of his next film, Lucy sees a chance to silence any doubters once and for all. But as filming begins, she must return to the California desert and come face-to-face with a cast of players from her torrid history. Of course, the past is never what it seems, and long-buried secrets soon collide with present-day threats. Can Lucy stop her critics from digging up the truth before it’s too late? And how far will she go to protect the story she’s been telling—and selling—all along?
Told in a narrative split between the present day and Lucy’s hit memoir about her fated summer in the cult, Paper Cut combines psychological suspense with coming-of-age Californian cult noir and a sharp examination of the true-crime phenomenon. As incisive as it is propulsive, this mesmerizing debut will keep readers hooked until the last page.
Rachel Taff is an author and television producer. Most recently, Rachel was the Director of Development at Dynamic Television, known for Ginny and Georgia, where she sold projects toAmazon and Hallmark. Previously, Rachel worked for Emmy-winning director Thomas Schlamme’s Shoe Money Productions, where she developed projects for FX and managed a production slate including Snowfall and The Plot Against America. Additional credits include SMILF, American Dad, and Fresh Off the Boat. Rachel earned a Media Arts & Entertainment degree at Elon University. After a decade in Los Angeles, she now lives in Atlanta with her husband and their Portuguese water dog. Paper Cut is her first novel.

Kaira Rouda, with Lian Dolan, & We Were Never Friends at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Kaira Rouda, in conversation with Lian Dolan, will discuss We Were Never Friends.
Sisters? Forever. Friends? NEVER. Who knew a reunion weekend could be so deadly?
Meet the sorority sisters of Theta Gamma Mu:
Roxy Callahan Gentry, the ruthless former sorority president and current hostess who has painstakingly choreographed every detail of this weekend—even matching the cocktails to her couture—to prove that she remains their undisputed queen.
Amelia Dell, the widow drenched in old money and alcohol, with her big pot-stirring spoon and uninvited boy-toy in tow.
Jamie Vale, the double-legacy pledge, straight-A student with no sparkle, now a top cardiologist with a picture-perfect family—and a well-guarded bad habit
Beth Harrison, the scholarship student who never quite fit in and was only admitted because her best friend Sunny insisted that the two were a package deal.
Sunny Spencer, the carefree and beloved friend to all, or so it seemed—until she wasn’t.
They’ve been summoned to Roxy’s luxurious Palm Springs vacation home to celebrate the engagement of her son to Beth’s daughter. But the refurbished 1920s estate is eerily reminiscent of the hotel where tragedy struck during Spring Break twenty-five years ago. Long-simmering tensions and shocking secrets begin bubbling to the surface like bodies—because while the weekend was supposed to be about celebrating the future, it’s not so easy to bury the past.

He is also the cofounder and president of Symptom Media, an innovative mental health education platform used by over 500 universities, hospitals, and medical schools worldwide to help train students and clinicians and destigmatize mental illness. He’s also the writer-creator of the Geekie Award-winning sci-fi graphic novel Colonus, published by Dark Horse Comics, and the quirky murder mystery novella 4 Corners, also optioned for TV. Ken has sold network pilots and feature screenplays, events that expired with little fanfare. His credits include a screenplay co-written with David Seidler, Oscar-winner for The King’s Speech, and a PBS documentary on the early career of US Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens that he hopes to develop as a feature. His fiction was short-listed for the 2025 HG Wells Prize and he’s also contributed to The Saturday Evening Post, The Louisville Review, Salon, Publishers Weekly, Huffington Post, Literary Hub, Carve, American Writers Review, and other publications, as well as the anthology More Tonto Short Stories, published in the US and UK. Susan Walter is a recovering screenwriter and film director who started writing books to kill people because it was frowned upon in real life. Her first two novels, Good as Dead and Over Her Dead Body are set in the movie business, but then she discovered there are places that are even more dangerous. She is now murdering people on airplanes, on ski hills, and in safehouses while on the run from organized crime. Sasha Abramsky & American Carnage: How Trump, Musk and Doge Butchered the U.S. Government at Book Soup – In-Person Event
Author Sasha Abramsky presents aripping narrative of federal workers caught in Trump’s second-term purge, and the devastating consequences for American democracy.
American Carnage follows eleven federal workers, in eight government agencies, from the time they were told they were fired in the early weeks of Donald Trump’s second presidential administration through to the summer of 2025. With Trump having empowered the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, and his Department of Government Efficiency, to make dramatic cuts to many of the country’s most important agencies, what unfolded in these months was a cascading tragedy of historic proportions.
Their stories, which show a country in a profound moment of crisis and dislocation, are America’s stories. What happened to them—the bullying, the intimidation, the deliberate removal of financial stability—also happened to hundreds of thousands of other employees. A fierce reckoning with the intimate and far-reaching effects of these layoffs, both on the individuals who lost their jobs and on the millions of Americans who found their access to basic government services curtailed, American Carnage is the first book-length account of how these cuts dulled and denuded our city on the hill, leaving a morally impoverished landscape in their wake.

At Skylight: Feminist Book Club Launch: Reading as a Political Act at Skylight – In-Person Event
Our Feminist Book Club is a space to read boldly, think critically, and build community through stories that challenge power and expand possibility. We’re kicking off the year with Reservoir Bitches by Dahlia de la Cerda, a raw and unflinching collection of short stories centered on women navigating survival, violence, and resistance under failed systems.
Set in Mexico and told through sharp, unapologetic voices, Reservoir Bitches confronts class inequality, patriarchy, and state violence while centering women who are constantly pushed to the margins. Together, we’ll discuss how feminist literature helps us better understand the world we’re living in and imagine the one we’re fighting to create.
If you haven’t read the book, you are more than welcome to still join and learn about our goals and mission for the Feminist Book Club for 2026!
Join our book club and read books that are being censored and support the incredible Feminist Press publishing.
This book club is in collaboration with Repro uncensored and Feminist Press.

Storytime with Dan McCauley & Thank You, Snow at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Kids Event
Join us for a storytime with Dan McCauley, who will read and discuss Thank You, Snow.
Dan McCauley is a writer and educator who grew up in New York City. Raised by Little League coaches, a caring community, and his family’s love, Dan pursued his passion for teaching and storytelling at New York University. After working as a teacher in the Bronx, he moved to Los Angeles, where he works with middle and high school students as a learning specialist. Dan is the author of the Thank You, World series. He writes and teaches with the same sense of awe, wonder, and gratitude he feels toward the world.
When we say yes to exploring nature, we discover so many reasons to smile and say, “Thank You.”
Thank You, Snow follows a young girl as she enjoys the magic of a snowy day. Overcoming her hesitation to leave the cozy warmth of home, she ventures with her family into the neighborhood. They notice how the snow sounds crunchy under their feet, how it feels cold and wet on their faces, and how it looks like glitter falling through the air. They share their gratitude for nature’s gifts—the sparkling snowflakes, the scent of evergreen trees, and even their breath forming clouds in the crisp air. Through mindfulness, togetherness, and play, the girl feels a deepening sense of gratitude.

Middle Grade Book Club: The Sherlock Society at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person MG Event
Join us for the newest Village Well book club, the Middle Grade Book Club! RSVP for your spot below!
Once a month, we’ll meet and explore some of the best middle-grade books out there. We’ll chat about the characters, themes, favorite scenes, and whatever else happens to interest us about the chosen title. There’s never pressure to participate in the discussion. All meetings conclude with either a writing activity or craft. We’d like you to read the book before the meeting, but if you didn’t get to finish, please still come by (although we’re gonna spoil the ending!).
Our inaugural book choice is The Sherlock Society by James Ponti.
Local author Heather Alexander has written more than 90 books for kids. Her nonfiction has been recognized as Amazon Best Book, National Science Teachers Association Best STEM Book, Parent’s Choice Award selections and the winner of the June Franklin Naylor Award. She was the editor of R.L. Stine’s mega-popular, bestselling Goosebumps and Fear Street series, among many, many others.
In The Sherlock Society, Brother and sister, Alex and Zoe Sherlock, decide that starting a detective agency is better than babysitting (boring), lawn mowing (sweaty), or cleaning out the attic (boring and sweaty). Their friends Lina, an avid bookworm, and Yadi, an aspiring cinematographer, join in, and Alex and Zoe’s retired reporter grandfather offers up his sweet aquamarine Cadillac convertible and storage unit full of cold cases. The group’s first target is the long-lost treasure supposedly hidden near their hometown Miami. Their investigation into the local doings of famed gangster Al Capone leads them to a remote island in the middle of the Everglades, where they find alarming evidence hinting at corporate corruption. With Grandpa’s know-how and some really slick gadgets, can the Sherlock Society root out the conspiracy?

Jo Giese, with Alex Vaughan, & You’ll Never Walk Alone at Diesel, A Bookstore – In-Person Event
Join us to welcome Jo Giese, in conversation with Alex Vaughan, to discuss and sign You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Life can change on a dime. Jo Giese was a passionate hiker one day, and unable to walk the next.
A random accident at home and botched surgery resulted in a dead Achilles tendon and left her at a decisive moment—would she no longer enjoy the outdoors as before, or would she battle to find her footing? When you enjoy hiking as much as Giese, the solution is obvious. The way ahead, however, less so.
By all accounts, Giese should still not be walking, let alone leaping from helicopters and seeking out some of the most stunning and remote waterfalls around the world. With significant help from loved ones and medical staff, and relying on her own toughness and positive outlook, she beat the odds and relearned how to walk and pursue the outdoors and her beloved waterfalls as before. Giese was called “a medical miracle” and realized that, indeed, we never walk alone. Giese’s story chronicles her joy, and how she responded when that joy was taken from her. This memoir is certain to have readers sobbing and celebrating, unwilling to come up short with anything less than their best lives.
You’ll Never Walk Alone will have uncertain hikers getting off the couch, seasoned hikers reaching for their poles, and everybody seeking to express their gratitude no matter what challenges life tosses at them.
Jo Giese is the author of several books, including the recent bestseller Never Sit If You Can Dance. As a hiker and author, she was featured on the cover of Argonaut Magazine, November 2021, and May 2024 she was honored as a Local Hero by the Oboz hiking shoe company.
She is also an award-winning radio journalist, author, teacher, community activist, and former TV reporter. As a special correspondent she was part of the Peabody Award-winning team at Marketplace, the most popular business program in America. At Marketplace, she did 33 stories in the Breaking the Mold series about women succeeding in male-dominated career fields. These stories were a direct outgrowth of her book A Woman’s Path. For these radio stories she won an EMMA for Exceptional Radio Story from the National Political Women’s Caucus and a GRACIE from the Foundation of Women in Radio.
She’s currently active with the Union Rescue Mission, which services and houses homeless people in L.A. She’s also been active with the Los Angeles Review of Books, hosting events for major authors like Jane Smiley. As founder and president of the MalibuGreenMachine she spearheaded a million-dollar highway safety project on the Pacific Coast Highway. For this work she was honored by The Malibu Times as Citizen of the Year and received the Malibu Way of Life Award.
Her work has been featured in other books, including Dogs and Their Women, Female Nomad and Friends, Travelers’Tales FRANCE, and Travelers’ Tales A WOMAN’S WORLD. She has written for many publications, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Vogue, the LA Weekly, European Travel & Life, BARK, Montana Outdoors, and The Malibu Times. She has also contributed to Ira Glass’ This American Life.
Jo lives in Southern California and Bozeman, Montana, with her husband Ed Warren.
Alex Vaughan is a filmmaker, actor, and teaching artist with over 20 years of experience in theatre, film, television, animation, commercials, and comedy working with Netflix, Hulu, FX, FOX, ABC, Freeform, and many more. He is a resident teaching artist and coach at Gary Spatz’s Playground, Unity Acting School, and The Screen Acting Studio. He enjoys good stories, a nice steak, and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

In the 1930s, scandal, secret loves, and murder shatter a woman’s Hollywood dream in a gripping novel by the USA Today bestselling author of When the World Goes Quiet.
It’s 1933, and though the country is stuck in the Great Depression, movies are the ultimate escape. But Hollywood is skilled at selling lies, and nothing is as it seems.
Frankie Donnelly is scrappy, smart, and ambitious. Her knack for spinning any story into stellar publicity has made her an invaluable “fixer” at RCO Studios, where she works under the tutelage of powerful Nico Marconi. Frankie’s latest fix is the upcoming marriage of Hollywood royals Jack Sawyer and June Finney, and millions of fans can’t wait to see their favorite silver-screen lovers tie the knot. But Frankie knows the truth: The marriage is an artful cover for Jack and June’s darkest secrets.
When a shocking murder occurs, allegiances fracture, the tabloids go wild, and a devastated public is left reeling. Frankie uncovers new layers of scandal and deception and is forced to choose which Hollywood player to protect and who to destroy. Now, more than ever, the country needs a happy ending—but at what cost?

Book Launch: Tomorrow Brings Joy: On Love, Memory, & Becoming by Mahyar and Mahbod Amouzegar at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person MG Event
Mahyar and Mahbod Amouzegar will present and sign Tomorrow Brings Joy: On Love, Memory, & Becoming: A Novel.
Set centuries in the future, Elysium is less concerned with technology than with tenderness—how people love, question, and grow within the worlds they inherit. This event features a brief reading followed by reflections on the novel’s themes and audience questions.
Mahyar and Mahbod Amouzegar, brothers born in Tehran, immigrated to the United States as teenagers amidst the upheaval of the Iranian Revolution. Both grew up in San Francisco, where the city’s literary culture and the rise of the tech industry shaped their creative and intellectual paths. Mahyar, former president of New Mexico Tech and the author of four novels, explores themes of identity, resilience, and the human condition. Mahbod, inspired by his parents’ literary legacy, has edited and published his mother’s works and is compiling his father’s memoir. This novel represents the culmination of a lifelong journey to reconnect with their heritage. By weaving together elements of their past and present, the Amouzegar brothers have crafted a story that bridges imagination, memory, and the enduring ties of family.
In Tomorrow Brings Joy: Elysium, the Amouzegar brothers weave a compelling narrative of hope and discovery in a society where humans and androids coexist in fragile harmony.
Elysium was designed to abolish traditional hierarchies and achieve perfect harmony. Yet beneath its utopian surface lies a hidden history of sacrifice and control. Dolores, a perceptive and spirited human, and her enigmatic android companion, KR, begin unraveling the mysteries of their seemingly ideal world. Their search for answers leads them to the Walled City-a parallel social experiment-and the unsettling truths behind Elysium’s founding.
As Dolores and her friends, known as Pod, delve deeper into this web of intrigue, they must confront the ideals of their society and their own roles within it.
Rich with philosophical depth, compelling characters, and emotional resonance, Tomorrow Brings Joy: Elysium explores the boundaries of humanity, the weight of history, and the courage it takes to imagine a better world.
