Book Club: The Cemetery of Untold Stories at Sherman Oaks Martin Pollard Branch Library, LAPL – Online Event

Participants will discuss The Cemetery of Untold Stories by author Julia Alvarez.

Alma Cruz, the celebrated writer at the heart of The Cemetery of Untold Stories, doesn’t want to end up like her friend, a novelist who fought so long and hard to finish a book that it threatened her sanity. So, when Alma inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic, her homeland, she has the beautiful idea of turning it into a place to bury her untold stories—literally. She creates a graveyard for the manuscript drafts and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her.

The Cemetery of Untold Stories asks: Whose stories get to be told, and whose buried? Finally, Alma finds the meaning she and her characters yearn for in the everlasting vitality of stories. Julia Alvarez reminds us that the stories of our lives are never truly finished, even at the end.

One Book One Block with Danzy Senna & Colored Television at Chevalier’s Off-site at The Ebell of Los Angeles – In-Person Event

Danzy Senna will present and discuss her novel, Colored Television, as part of Chevalier’s One Book One Block community reading program.

Jane has high hopes that her life is about to turn around. After a long, precarious stretch bouncing among sketchy rentals and sublets, she and her family are living in luxury for a year, house-sitting in the hills above Los Angeles. The gig magically coincides with Jane’s sabbatical, giving her the time and space she needs to finish her second novel—a centuries-spanning epic her artist husband, Lenny, dubs her “mulatto War and Peace.” Finally, some semblance of stability and success seems to be within her grasp.

But things don’t work out quite as hoped. Desperate for a plan B, like countless writers before her Jane turns her gaze to Hollywood. When she finagles a meeting with Hampton Ford, a hot producer with a major development deal at a streaming network, he seems excited to work with a “real writer,” and together they begin to develop “the Jackie Robinson of biracial comedies.” Things finally seem to be going right for Jane—until they go terribly wrong.

Danzy Senna is the bestselling author of six previous books, including Caucasia, New People, and most recently Colored Television. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, she teaches writing at the University of Southern California.

Paola Mendoza & Solis at Vroman’s – In-Person Event

Paola Mendoza will present and discussher speculative fiction novel Solis, a companion to her previous book, Sanctuary.

The year is 2033, and in this near-future America where undocumented people are forced into labor camps, life is bleak. Especially so for seventeen-year-old Rania, a Lebanese teenager from Chicago. When she and her mother were rounded up by the Deportation Force, they were given the brutal job of digging in the labor camp’s mine searching for the destructive and toxic, but potentially world-changing chemical, aqualinium. With this chemical the corrupt and xenophobic government of the New American Republic could actually control the weather—ending devastating droughts sweeping the planet due to climate change. If the government succeeds, other countries would be at their mercy. Solidifying this power comes at the expense of the undocumented immigrants forced to endure horrendous conditions to mine the chemical or used in cruel experiments to test it, leaving their bodies wracked in extreme pain to the point of death. As the experiments ramp up, things only get worse. Rania and her fellow prisoners decide to start a revolution; if they don’t, they know they will die.

LiveTalks LA Presents: An Evening with Bethany Joy Lenz & Dinners for Vampires at Glorya Kaufman Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar – In-Person & YouTube Hybrid Event

Bethany Joy Lenz will discuss her book, Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show (While also in an Actual Cult!).

A deliciously witty and inspiring memoir by One Tree Hill star Bethany Joy Lenz about her decade in a cult and her quest to break free.

Bethany Joy Lenz starred in the hit TV series One Tree Hill. Her other acting credits include Guiding Light, Grey’s Anatomy, Charmed, Felicity, Suits, Dexter, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She is also a recording artist who has released several albums. Lenz currently cohosts the podcast Drama Queens and is the founder/editor-in-chief of the broadsheet newspaper Modern Vintage News.

In the early 2000s, after years of hard work and determination to breakthrough as an actor, Bethany Joy Lenz was finally cast as one of the leads on the hit drama One Tree Hill. Her career was about to take off, but her personal life was slowly beginning to unravel. What none of the show’s millions of fans knew, hidden even from her costars, was her secret double life in a cult.

An only child who often had to fend for herself and always wanted a place to belong, Lenz found the haven she’d been searching for in a Bible study group with other Hollywood creatives. However, the group soon morphed into something more sinister—a slowly woven web of manipulation, abuse, and fear under the guise of a church covenant called The Big House Family. Piece by piece, Lenz began to give away her autonomy, ultimately relocating to the Family’s Pacific Northwest compound, overseen by a domineering minister who would convince Lenz to marry one of his sons and steadily drained millions of her TV income without her knowledge. Family “minders” assigned to her on set, “Maoist struggle session”–inspired meetings in the basement of a filthy house, and regular counseling with “Leadership” were just part of the tactics used to keep her loyal.

Written with powerful honesty and dark humor, Dinner for Vampires is an inspiring story about the importance of identity and understanding what you believe.

Book Event: Paola Mendoz, with Chase Straglo, & Solis at Rep Club Off-site at Democracy Center at the Japanese American Museum – In-Person Event

Author Paola Mendoza, in conversation with Chase Stranglo, will present and discuss her debut novel, Solis.

From the author of Sanctuary comes a haunting near-future companion tale about undocumented immigrants subjected to deadly experiments in a government labor camp and the four courageous rebels who set into place a daring plan to liberate them.

The year is 2033, and in this near-future America where undocumented people are forced into labor camps, life is bleak. Especially so for seventeen-year-old Rania, a Lebanese teenager from Chicago. When she and her mother were rounded up by the Deportation Force, they were given the brutal job of digging in the labor camp’s mine in search of the destructive and toxic—but potentially world-changing—mineral aqualinium. With this mineral, the corrupt and xenophobic government of the New American Republic could actually control the weather—ending devastating droughts sweeping the planet due to climate change. As the experiments ramp up, things only get worse. Rania and her fellow prisoners decide to start a revolution; if they don’t, they know they will die.

Told by four narrators—Rania, Jess (a former teenage Deportation Force officer), Vali, and Vali’s mother, Liliana—Solis is about the courage and sacrifice it takes to stand and fight for freedom.

Basketball Book Launch: Mirin Fader, with Mirjam Swanson, & Dream at Village Well Books & Coffee – In-Person Event

It’s now the norm for NBA and collegiate teams to have international players dotting their rosters. That all started with Hakeem “the Dream” Olajuwon. He was the first international player to win the MVP, which is hard to believe now considering the last time an American‑born player won it was in 2018.

In Dream, award-winning hoops journalist Mirin Fader explores this phenomenal shift through the lens of what Olajuwon accomplished throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. Dream ignites nostalgia for Phi Slama Jama and “the Dream Shake,” while also exploring the profound influence of Olajuwon’s commitment to Islam on his approach to life and basketball, and how his devotion to his faith inspired generations of Muslim people around the world.

Olajuwon’s ongoing work with NBA Africa, his status as an international ambassador for the game, and his consultations with today’s brightest stars, from LeBron James to Giannis Antetokounmpo, brings the story right up to the present moment, and beyond. Synthesizing hundreds of interviews and in-depth research, Fader provides the definitive biography of Olajuwon as well as a crucial understanding of his pivotal impact on the ever-shifting game.

It’s now the norm for NBA and collegiate teams to have international players dotting their rosters. The Olympics are no longer a gimme for Team USA. Both via fans streaming from all over the globe and leagues starting in countries throughout the world, the international presence of the game of basketball is a force to be reckoned with.

Her first book, Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA Champion, was a New York Times Bestseller, Los Angeles Times Bestseller, Wall Street Journal Bestseller, USA Today Bestseller, and Publishers Weekly Bestseller. She has profiled some of the NBA’s biggest stars, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ja Morant, DeMar DeRozan, and LaMelo Ball, telling the backstories that have shaped some of our most complex, most dominant, heroes. Fader wrote for Bleacher Report from 2017 to 2020 and the Orange County Register from 2013 to 2017. Her work has been featured in the “Best American Sports Writing” series and honored by the Pro Basketball Writers Association, the Associated Press Sports Editors, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the Football Writers Association of America, and the Los Angeles Press Club. Sarah Anderson and Hannah Hillam Present: Adulthood is a Gift: A Celebration of Sarah’s Scribbles, and Cat People: A Comic Collection at Vroman’s – In-Person Event

Sarah Anderson will discuss her book Adulthood is a Gift: A Celebration of Sarah’s Scribbles.

With 100 comics, 15 essays, and dozens of photos and sketches, the fifth Sarah’s Scribbles book offers a rare look behind the creative process of one of the most original and beloved comic artists of a generation. A comedic companion to her first book, the bestselling Adulthood is a Myth, the artwork and writing in Adulthood is a Gift! is a celebration of the many experiences and life lessons the author has picked up in her decade of making viral, relatable, and award-winning comics and books. This book also includes a sticker sheet.

Hannah Hillam will discuss her book, Cat People: A Comic Collection.

The first collection from comic artist Hannah Hillam poses the question: What if our cats were responsible for taking care of us for a change?

Following an unwitting human who finds herself in a world where humans’ and cats’ roles have reversed, Cat People examines the special and inscrutable relationship we have with our feline companions, revealing the delightful absurdities of both species along the way.

Poetry Event: Forrest Gander & Mojave Ghost at The Hammer Museum – In-Person Event

Join us to hear the poetry of Forrest Gander, presented and hosted by poet, literary critic, and UCLA Distinguished Research Professor Stephen Yenser. Cosponsored by the UCLA Department of English and UCLA Recreation.

The delicate, undaunted, disconcerting power of Forrest Gander’s work springs from the view that dimensions of experience, too often neatly segregated, intersect. He will read from Mojave Ghost, which a subtle subtitle designates A Novel Poem and which unfolds from desert walks during which he discovers the reticulations of past and present, actual and recalled, physical and spiritual—xeric and eldritch. The cover’s simple image shows a great saguaro cactus casting the shadow of a human.

Karla Cornejo Villavicencio & CATALINA at Chevalier’s – In-Person Event

Karla Cornejo Villavicencio will discuss her National Book Award Longlisted novel Catalina.

When Catalina is admitted to Harvard, it feels like the fulfillment of destiny: a miracle child escapes death in Latin America, moves to Queens to be raised by her undocumented grandparents, and becomes one of the chosen.

But nothing is simple for Catalina, least of all her own complicated, contradictory, ruthlessly probing mind. Now a senior, she faces graduation to a world that has no place for the undocumented; her sense of doom intensifies her curiosities and desires. She infiltrates the school’s elite subcultures—internships and literary journals, posh parties and secret societies—which she observes with the eye of an anthropologist and an interloper’s skepticism: she is both fascinated and repulsed.

Craving a great romance, Catalina finds herself drawn to a fellow student, an actual budding anthropologist eager to teach her about the Latin American world she was born into but never knew, even as her life back in Queens begins to unravel. And every day, the clock ticks closer to the abyss of life after graduation. Can she save her family? Can she save herself? What does it mean to be saved?

Karla Cornejo Villavicencio is the author of the National Book Award finalist, The Undocumented Americans. Her work, which focuses on race, culture, and immigration, has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, Elle, n+1, The New Inquiry, Interview, and on NPR.

Marina Diamonds, with Ashley Uzer, & Eat the World at Vroman’s – In-Person Event

Marina Diamonds, in conversation with Ashley Uzer, will discuss her collection of poems, Eat the World.

For the first time, platinum-certified singer-songwriter Marina shares her singular observations of the human heart through poetry.

Marina’s talent for powerful, evocative song lyrics finds a new outlet in her poetry. Each poem resonates with the same creative melodies and emotional depth that have made her an artistic sensation. Hailed by The New York Times for “redefining songs about coming of age, and the aftermath, with bluntness and crafty intelligence,” Marina delves even further into trauma, youth, and the highs and lows of relationships in these profound, autobiographical poems to form a collection that transcends the boundaries of music and literature.

MARINA is an award-winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter who burst on to the scene in 2009. She has since released five acclaimed albums including The Family Jewels (2010), Electra Heart (2012), which debuted at Number 1 on the UK’s Official Charts, Froot (2015), Love + Fear (2019), which debuted Top 5 in the UK and Top 10 on the U.S. Albums chart, and most recently Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land (2021), which featured the Ivor Novello-nominated hit “Man’s World.” Each of Marina’s records have been accompanied by global sell-out headline tours with shows at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals worldwide. Marina has amassed 4 billion worldwide streams and over 700 million video views. A socially engaged figure, she has given an address at the Oxford Union and has an incredibly passionate global fan base with an online following in excess of 7 million. Marina’s talent for powerful, evocative song lyrics is undeniable—for the first time she will share her observations of the human heart through poetry in Eat the World: A Collection of Poems, out October 29, 2024.

Darrell McNeill, with Michael Mabern, & The Isley Brothers’ 3+3 (33 1/3) at Book Soup – In-Person Event

Darrell M. MacNeill, in conversation with Michael Mabern, will discuss his book, The Isley Brothers’ 3+3 (33 1/3).

The Isley Brothers’ 3+3, dissects The Isleys’ 50-year-old undisputed masterwork, an album that firmly established their music dynasty on a global scale, as well as heralding the boldest run of genre-defiant albums of their 67-year career.

The book looks at the album from all angles: from The Isleys’ early career to their influence on rock and rollers both Black and White, from the twists and turns of having national hits without national recognition, on to their decision to form T-Neck Records and the group’s challenges navigating a music industry that racially codified music and hampered Black artists from universal acclaim and compensations. Finally, a summation of the decades follows The Isleys’ run and its ups and downs, with a fast-forward to where the group is now after 67 years.

At Skylight: Poupeh Missaghi presents The Sound Museum at Skylight – In-Person Event

Poupeh Missaghi will discuss her book, The Sound Museum.

Join us for a combination of fiction and documentation as a Sound Museum fearlessly interrogates state-sanctioned violence and the psychology—and banality—of evil.

In Iran, a curator has gathered foreign journalists for a VIP tour of her latest creation. As the guests sit to listen to her initial remarks, she shares the struggles she’s faced in bringing together this exhibition—especially the gender inequity she’s battled for her entire career.

But the Sound Museum is no ordinary institution. It is a museum of torture, wrought from the audio recordings pulled from interrogation rooms and prison cells. And the curator—her unbroken monologue drifting through fieldwork examples, case studies, archives, philosophy, and dreams—is only too happy to share her part in this globe-spanning industry.

With sensuous and lyrical prose, Sound Museum bears witness while calling into question the act of witnessing, underlining complicities in systems of power and drawing the reader into the uncomfortable position of confronting one woman’s psyche: evil, yet completely blind to her own depravity.

Poupeh Missaghi is a writer, editor, and translator (between English and Persian). Her debut novel trans(re)lating house one was published in 2020 (Coffee House Press). Her translations include I’ll be Strong for You by Nasim Marashi (Astra House, 2021) and In the Streets of Tehran by Nila (Ithaka Press, 2023), as well as forthcoming Boys of Love by Ghazi Rabihavi (University of Wisconsin Press, 2024). She is currently an assistant professor of English and Literary Arts at the University of Denver, and a faculty mentor at the Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, OR.

M.T. Anderson & Nicked at Vroman’s – In-Person Event

Celebrated author M.T. Anderson will present and discuss his new book Nicked.

From the award-winning and bestselling author of Feed comes a raucous and slyly funny adult fiction debut. Based on a bizarre but true quest to steal the mystical corpse of a long-dead saint, Nicked is a fantastical, genre-defying, and delightfully queer historical romp.

The year is 1087, and a pox is sweeping through the Italian city of Bari. When a lowly monk is visited by Saint Nicholas in his dreams, he interprets the vision as a call to serve the sick. But his superiors, and the power brokers they serve, have different plans for the tender-hearted Brother Nicephorus.

Enter Tyun, a charismatic treasure hunter renowned for “liberating” holy relics from their tombs. The seven-hundred-year-old bones of Saint Nicholas are rumored to weep a mysterious liquid that can heal the sick, Tyun says. For the humble price of a small fortune, he will steal the bones and deliver them to Bari, curing the plague and restoring glory to the fallen city. And Nicephorus, the “dreamer,” will be his guide.

What follows is a heist for the ages, as Nicephorus is swept away on strange tides, and alongside even stranger bedfellows, to commit sacrilegious theft. Based on real historical accounts, Nicked is a swashbuckling saga, a medieval novel noir, a meditation on the miraculous, and a monastic meet-cute, filled with wide-eyed wonder at the world that awaits beyond our own borders.

Lost in Translation: The Impact of the Hollywood Production Code on Literature at Central Library, LAPL – In-Person Event

From the 1930s-1960s, the Hollywood Studio System was unmatched in taking literary works and creating timeless images on celluloid. However, because of the stringent moral Production Code and Hollywood’s obsession with a happy ending, the source material for many of these films was often diluted and manipulated, rendering the finished film far less interesting than a story’s original incarnation. Join us as we explore the source material for three iconic Hollywood films, whose content was dialed down for the Silver Screen by the constraints of the Production Code.

Works to be discussed are A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote.

The program will be presented by Christina Rice, Senior Librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection and author of Ann Dvorak: Hollywood’s Forgotten Rebel (2013, University Press of Kentucky) and Mean…Moody…Magnificent! Jane Russell and the Marketing of a Hollywood Legend (2021, University Press of Kentucky).

Julie Schnieders & A Hunt for Bugs at Vroman’s – In-Person Kids Event

Julie Schnieders will present her children’s book A Hunt for Bugs.

What is Charlie to do on a rainy day after his iPad no longer works? Bored, Charlie wants magic, adventure, and even to slay a dragon When a rainbow suddenly appears, Charlie steps outside to take a sensory journey through his neighborhood discovering the sights, sounds, and smell of nature. On his walk, Charlie learns much more about the world around him than he would have just playing video games.

Julie Schnieders grew up in South Pasadena, California, where her family settled over 100 years ago. As a child her parents took her hiking in the local mountains and on vacation at the beach where she collected seashells by the dozens. Her dad owned an ice cream business and candy shop—a child’s dream! Her early childhood memories fostered in her a love of nature, exploration, and of course, a sweet tooth!

The Dazed and Confused Poetry Club: AKoldPiece at The Glendale Room – In-Person Event

Fernando Funes presents The Dazed and Confused Poetry Club & Open Mic on the 1st Sunday of the month.

And this is an extra special show because we’ll be celebrating the birthday of AKoldPiece, a great LA poet and community fixture!

AKoldPiece—It was his dad who told him to write what he wanted to say down because he noticed when AKoldPiece read aloud he didn’t stutter. It was on that day that he became a writer. He began to write everything down. AKoldPiece started studying the dictionary & reading everything that he could get his hands on. He learned that the two had to go together so he could know how to use the words that he was memorizing out of the dictionary.

Featuring:

AKoldPiece (headliner)

Yano Rose

Maestro Gamin

RHiPS

And we got an open mic!

Everyone is welcome.
