At Skylight: Tyler Byas, with Guests, & I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times at Skylight Books – In-Person Event
Tyler Byas, with S. Fey, Dare Williams, & Dior J. Stephens, will present and discuss her book, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times, a debut, full-length poetry collection inspired by The Wiz!
This booktakes its inspiration and concept from the cult classic film The Wiz to explore a Black woman’s journey out of the South Side of Chicago and into adulthood. The narrative arc of The Wiz—a tumultuous departure from home, trials designed to reveal new things about the self, and the eventual return home—serves as a loose trajectory for this collection, pulling readers through an abandoned barn, a Wendy’s drive-thru, a Beyoncé video, Grandma’s house, Sunday service, and the corner store. At every stop, the speaker is made to confront her womanhood, her sexuality, the visibility of her body, alcoholism in her family, and various ways in which narratives are imposed on her.
Dr. Taylor Byas, Ph.D. is a Black Chicago native currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is an Assistant Features Editor for The Rumpus, an Acquisitions Poetry Editor for Variant Literature, a member of the Beloit Poetry Journal Editorial Board, and a 2023-24 National Book Critics Emerging Fellow. She is the 1st place winner of the 2020 Poetry Super Highway, the 2020 Frontier Poetry Award for New Poets Contest, and the 2021 Adrienne Rich Poetry Prize. She is the author of two chapbooks, her debut full-length, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times from Soft Skull Press, which won the 2023 Maya Angelou Book Award and the 2023 Chicago Review of Books Award in Poetry, and her second full-length Resting Bitch Face, forthcoming in 2025. She is also a coeditor of The Southern Poetry Anthology, Vol X: Alabama, published with Texas Review Press in December 2023, and Poemhood: Our Black Revival, a YA anthology forthcoming from HarperCollins.
Dior J. Stephens is a proud pisces hailing from Midwestern waters. He is the author of the chapbooks SCREAMS & lavender, 001, and CANNON!. Their debut full-length collection, CRUEL/CRUEL is out now with Nightboat Books. A Cave Canem, Lambda Literary, and Sewanee fellow, they happily serve as the Managing Poetry Editor of Foglifter Journal and Press. At Skylight: Kyle Chayka, with Chris Black, & Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture at Skylight Books – In-Person Event
Kyle Chayka, in conversation with Chris Black, will present a timely history and investigation of a world ruled by algorithms, which determine the shape of culture itself.
Kyle Chayka shows us how online and offline spaces alike have been engineered for seamless consumption, becoming a source of pervasive anxiety in the process. Users of technology have been forced to contend with data-driven equations that try to anticipate their desires—and often get them wrong. He traces this creeping, machine-guided curation as it infiltrates the furthest reaches of our digital, physical, and psychological spaces. What happens when shareability supersedes messiness, innovation, and creativity—the qualities that make us human? What does it mean to make a choice when the options have been so carefully arranged for us? Is personal freedom possible on the Internet?

At Skylight: Elizabeth Flock, with Tania Rashid, & The Furies at Skylight Books – In-Person Event
Elizabeth Flock, in conversation with Tania Rashid, will present and discuss her book, The Furies.
The Furies investigates what few dare to confront, or even imagine: the role and necessity of female-led violence in response to systems built against women.
Author Elizabeth Flock examines how three real-life women have used violence to fight back, and how views of women who defend their lives are often distorted by their depictions in media and pop culture. These three immersive narratives follow Brittany Smith, a young woman from Stevenson, Alabama, who killed a man she said raped her but was denied the protection of the Stand-Your-Ground law; Angoori Dahariya, leader of a gang in Uttar Pradesh, India, dedicated to avenging victims of domestic abuse; and Cicek Mustafa Zibo, a fighter in a thousands-strong all-female militia that battled ISIS in Syria. Each woman chose to use lethal force to gain power, safety, and freedom when the institutions meant to protect them—government, police, courts—utterly failed to do so. Each woman has been criticized for their actions by those who believe that violence is never the answer.
Elizabeth Flock is a journalist, and the author of THE HEART IS A SHIFTING SEA: LOVE AND MARRIAGE IN MUMBAI. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, and on the PBS NewsHour, where her investigation into sexual harassment and retaliation in the U.S. Forest Service won an Emmy Award and was nominated for a Peabody Award. A PEN America fellow and IWMF grantee, she lives in Chicago and Los Angeles.
Tania Rashid, born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Bangladesh, is an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker with over a decade of experience. Her career is marked by covering conflict zones across South Asia, Latin America, and Africa, including Somalia. Tania’s compelling documentaries have been featured on globally recognized platforms such as VICE, NBC News, Al Jazeera English, CNN International, National Geographic, PBS NewsHour, and the UK’s Channel 4.

Sherri L. Smith, with Elizabeth Wein, & American Wings at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Sherri L. Smith, in conversation with Elizabeht Wein, will discuss her book American Wings: Chicago’s Pioneering Black Aviators and the Race for Equality in the Sky.
From the acclaimed author of Flygirl and the bestselling author of Code Name Verity comes the thrilling and inspiring true story of the desegregation of the skies.
In the years between World War I and World War II, aviation fever was everywhere, including among Black Americans. But what hope did a Black person have of learning to fly in a country constricted by prejudice and Jim Crow laws, where some previous Black aviators like Bessie Coleman had to move to France to earn their wings?
American Wings follows a group of determined Black Americans: Cornelius Coffey and Johnny Robinson, skilled auto mechanics; Janet Harmon Bragg, a nurse; and Willa Brown, a teacher and social worker. Together, they created a flying club and built their own airfield on Chicago’s South Side. As the U.S. hurtled toward World War II, they established a school to train new pilots, teaching both Black and white students together and proving, in a time when the U.S. military was still segregated, that successful integration was possible.

LGBTQ Book Club participants will discuss The Female Man, by author Joanna Russ.

Joanna lives in a different version of reality: she’s a 1970s feminist trying to succeed in a man’s world. Janet is from Whileaway, a utopian earth where only women exist. And Jael is a warrior with steel teeth and catlike retractable claws, from an earth with separate-and warring-female and male societies. When these four women meet, the results are startling, outrageous, and subversive.

At Skylight: THE COMMON Issue #26 at Skylight Books – In-Person Event
Join The Common magazine for a celebration of writing and art from the seasonal, migrant, and immigrant farmworkers who power California’s vast food and agriculture systems, co-edited by Miguel M. Morales.
Essayist Amanda Mei Kim writes about the ways that collective power, racism, and nature weave through the lives of rural Californians of color, through the lens of her experience growing up on her family’s tenant farm just outside LA.
Poets Allison Adelle Hedge Coke, Aideed Medina, and Oswaldo Vargas write about the struggle and the beauty of work in the fields and on farms. Their work highlights the nuance and diversity of that experience—queer discovery, activism and protest, shared labor and community.
Artist Narsiso Martinez creates moving portraits and scenes of farmworkers in the fields, painted on flattened cardboard produce boxes discarded from grocery stores. This work is drawn from the nine seasons he worked in the fields of Eastern Washington state, to fund his undergraduate and graduate studies. Narsiso writes, “When I nest images of farmworkers amidst the colorful brand names and illustrations of agricultural corporations, I hope to help the viewer make a connection, or a disconnection rather, and start creating consciousness about the people that farm their food.”
This event will be hosted by the magazine’s managing editor Emily Everett.

Becky Nicolaides, with Naomi Hirahara, & The New Suburbia at Vroman’s – In-Person Event
Becky Nicolaides, in conversation with Naomi Hirahara, will discuss her book The New Suburbia.
America’s suburbs have been transforming. The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America’s cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation—rich, poor, Black American, Latino, Asian, immigrant, the unhoused, the lavishly housed, and everyone in between. Stories of everyday suburban life, in the process, have taken on new inflections.
Nowhere are these changes more vivid than in Los Angeles. Historian Becky Nicolaides explores a range of community experiences, from internal resegregation to suburban poverty, an embrace of law-and-order culture to police brutality, friendly neighbors to social withdrawal. Based on a half-century of quantitative data and unpublished oral histories and interviews, The New Suburbia explores vital landscapes where the American dream has endured, even as the dreamers have changed.

Book Launch: Julian Tepper, with Uzoamaka Maduka, & Cooler Heads at North Figueroa Bookshop – In-Person Event
Julian Tepper, in conversation with Uzoamaka Maduka, will present his fourth novel, Cooler Heads.
Cooler Heads is a story about modern love. With a triangulation of lovers and spouses, young children and careers struggling to get off the ground, in Celia and Paul we encounter two people in that pocket of life when the fight to figure out who we are and what we want burns brightest. This book is a meditation on the limits of what we can and cannot have, set in a city—New York—that would have us think that we can have it all.
Julian Tepper is the author of three previous novels, Between the Records, Balls, and Ark. His writing has appeared in The Paris Review, Playboy, The Brooklyn Rail, Zyzzyva, The Daily Beast, and elsewhere. His essay, “Locking Down with the Family You’ve Just Eviscerated in a Novel” was a “Notable Essay of 2022” in Best American Essays 2022. As a member of the band, The Natural History, he co-wrote the song “Don’t You Ever,” which was later turned into a hit by the legendary band, Spoon. He was born and raised in New York City and lives there still.
Uzoamaka Maduka is an actress and writer living in California. Twice named to the Forbes 30-Under-30, she is formerly the editor-in-chief of the American Reader and has written and edited extensively on literature, culture, and the arts.

DeForest Park Poetry and Ecology Event with Nancy Lynee Woo: River Session #1 / Mile 10 – In-Person Event
Explore art, culture, and place along the LA River in a monthly series of guided walks where the River is the lead artist and teacher. First in a series exploring the interconnection of nature and self.
Transforming 51 miles of the LA River/ Paayme Paxaayt with ART, NATURE, and COMMUNITY.
Each month we visit new sites along the River with artists, Indigenous Culture Bearers and local experts: Look for surprises around the bend!
Last year, in our first series of River Sessions, we visited sites along the River in the spirit of Hyonaayn’ar—a Tongva word that means both teacher and student. We learned creative tactics from many artists and Indigenous Cultural Practitioners who were our guides. What emerged is that the River is trying to heal herself—and our communities need healing too.
Our reflection is our connection—the River is both a metaphor and a literal indicator of our own health and self-awareness.
Our first River Sessions of 2024 will focus upon the emotional impact that the channelized River has upon us, led by poet Nancy Woo, our 2024 Creative Corp collaborator. Co-organized by Nancy Woo and LA River Arts, these sessions are part of a community-led, multi-disciplinary art project that invites participants to reflect upon the LA River, climate change, social justice, and the emotional interconnectivity of these phenomena, culminating in a printed zine and public performance.
Participants will learn about river ecosystems and site histories from the perspective of poets, artists, Indigenous Culture Bearers, and ecologists. Poet Nancy Woo and Kathryn Dressendorfer from the Surfrider Foundation will lead the 0.5-mile stroll on mostly flat terrain, we’ll pause at various points to connect with the surroundings and craft poems under the guidance of Nancy Woo, a published poet and Creative Corps collaborator. If visual expression is more your style, there will be prompts for photography and drawing.
