Recently Cellar Door Books in Riverside had their lease at the Canyon Crest Towne Center canceled due to the store hosting a Drag Queen Storytime earlier this month. The following is an update on the situation that Cellar Door posted to their Instagram page on Thursday.

As many of you know, we were told one week ago that Canyon Crest Management is terminating our lease and we must be out by March 31st.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help–thank you! The most important thing we need is more time to find a new location, pack up our current store and more. If all of our supporters could call, email or write the management at teh contact info below and request a July 16, 2023 end date (that is six months from the notification) that might persuade them.

Also, I know many of you are angry at this situation, as am I, but please continue to support the small local businesses here in the Towne Center since this was not their faultbut the fault of the new management. Several other businesses have also had their leases terminated, but I do not have first-hand information about this and suggest you speak to them. Please forgive my amazing staff and I if we are a little short on time. We are going to try to figure out the best way to keep you informed of any news so that we are not simply repeating the same information all day.

One of our great allies, Flip Tanedo, suggested that we all reach out to broader media outlets to get the word out: LA Times (they have contacted us), Alta, etc. We are very lucky to have Clarissa Cervantes, Mark Takano and many other wonderful people working with us to find solutions to this problem. Please remember that even if this is just a change in direction for the center. the way in which it was delivered and the extremely short timeline for us to vacate is a very poor way to treat the small businesses that have given this center the charm and warmth we have come to love.
