Set in the gold camps of California in the 1850s, Joaquin Murietta heads for the riches of the gold fields which have already lured his brother and cousin, and convinces his beloved Rosita to run away with him. Instead of riches, they find deep prejudice and explosive violence and unspeakable tragedy, which forces him to become a leader of men—becoming a legend in the process. He fights back with all his will with his band of outlaws, and is determined to drive Americans from the land that so recently belonged to Mexico. After his brother is killed, Murietta must take a last stand against cruel California Ranger Harry Love—who is determined to kill Murietta and drive his followers out of California for good.
