David Talbot and Margaret Talbot & By the Light of Burning Dreams via Book Soup – Online Event

Join authors David Talbot & Margaret Talbot to hear them discuss their book, By the Light of Burning Dreams.

The political landscape of the 1960s and 1970s was perhaps one of the most tumultuous in this country’s history, shaped by the fight for civil rights, women’s liberation, Black power, and the end of the Vietnam War. In many ways it was a belated fulfillment of the betrayed promises of the first American Revolution, striving to fulfill the full protection of the Bill of Rights to non-white, non-male, non-elite Americans excluded by the nation’s founders.

Share the Mic: The Folklore of the Freeway via Fowler Museum – Online Event

The current “Borders and Boundaries” section of The Map and the Territory exhibition explores how borders affect relationships among individuals, communities, and places. Some boundaries are systemic, and require decades of struggle to overcome.

UCLA professor Eric Avila’s book, The Folklore of the Freeway: Race and Revolt in the Modern City, maps creative strategies devised by urban communities in the 1960s and 1970s to document and protest the damage wrought by highways, which cut through and destroyed many communities of color. Join us to learn about this history; the impact of redlining on LA’s Boyle Heights; the work of Latinx artists who critique and satirize highway construction as a racist and sexist enterprise; and the influence of diverse communities on urban policy.

Share the Mic: The Fowler believes in the civic duty of museums to give forum to multiple points of view. This series features thought lead artist, activists, and allies—who are guiding us along the arc of justice.
