Matthew Specktor, with Jonathan Lethem & Dana Spiotta, & Always Crashing in the Same Car via Book Soup – Online Event
Join author Matthew Specktor, in conversation with authors Jonathan Lethem & Dana Spiotta, to hear them discuss his book, Always Crashing in the Same Car: On Art, Crisis, and Los Angeles, California.
In 2006, the author moved to a crumbling L.A. department opposite the one in which his literary idol, F. Scott Fitzgerald, spent the last moments of his life. He was feeling unmoored, by his divorce, career failures, and mother’s cancer diagnosis, so he embarked on an obsessive investigation of the mythologies of success and failure that haunt the artist’s life and the American imagination. Part memoir, part cultural history, part portrait of place, it explores Hollywood through a kind of collapse.

Join us to hear Willa C. Richards, in discussion with Chia-Chia Lin, present and discuss The Comfort of Monsters.
In this heartbreaking thriller, the author’s debut novel is the story of a broken family looking for answers to daughter Dee’s disappearance one summer in Milwaukee. How often are our memories altered by the very act of voicing them, and when are they inherently suspect?

Negative Capability: A Poetry Workshop with Laurel Ann Bogen via Beyond Baroque– Online Event
One of the many tools in a poet’s toolbox, one of the most useful, is Negative Capability. The term, coined by John Keats, is a type of poetic license that gives the poet the ability to inhabit any person, place, or thing he or she or they wish: in other words, to take the personal and make it universal. This one-day workshop, led by Laurel Ann Bogen, will include examples of poetry that use this technique, discussion and in-class exercises, as well as a one-on-one after-class critique, scheduled with the facilitator after the end of the workshop.
Laurel Ann Bogen is the author of eleven books of poetry and short fiction, most recently Psychosis in the Produce Department: New and Selected Poems, from Red Hen Press. A native of Ls Angeles, she was an instructor of poetry and performance art at the Writers Program at UCLA Extension from 1990-2021.

Sunday Jump Un/Rest to Restoration Open via Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) – In-Person & Online Event
Join us as Sunday Jump begins its 9th season!
Our theme this year is restoration. It’s a reflection, a response, a conversation as we navigate the events of the past year, and heal holistically coming out of it. For our opening, we are guided by the words of Roxane Gay: :So many of us are reaching out, hoping someone out there will grab our hands and remind us we are not as alone as we we fear.”
Hosts Eddy M. Gana Jr. and Abigail Pidazo welcome our featured guests:
Vealy – A singer and songwriter.
MT Vallarta – Poet. Their research is an examination of queer futurities in contemporary Filipinx poetry, where they investigate the ways figuration, language, form, and other aesthetic elements of poems provide critiques of the (hetero)normative and imagine the otherwise for queer, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people of color.
Ashley Lanuza – Poet.
DJ LadyBug – Sound selection/music.
Spotlight wil be on Chinatown Community for Equitable Development (CCED).
NOTE: Details, schedule, registration, and link are available at site. Limited capacity of 25 audience members inside site requires that you must register in advance at website.
