Author of Cack-Handed, Gina Yashere is a British comedian of Nigerian heritage who has appeared on countless TV shows in the US and UK. She has also performed on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, has three comedy shows on Netflix, and is co-executive producer, writer and series regular on the CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola, which she co-created with Chuck Lorre.
According to family superstition, Gina Yashere was born to fulfill her dreams of her grandmother Patience, who was born with a spot on her neck, From birth, Gina carried a similar birthmark—a sign she would fulfill Patience’s dreams. Raquel Baker earned a PhD in English Literary Studies from the University of Iowa and an MFA in Creative Writing form Mills College. In this memoir the author tells her intimate and unflinching life story, from her fearful youth during World War II on the west coast, to the struggles of people of color who reclaimed their histories, identities, and power through activism and art. Her release of A Grain of Sand was considered to be the first Asian American folk album, and her experience raising an Afro-Asian American son, as well as a marriage that intertwined Black and Japanese families and communities, placed her at the nexus of the 1992 riots, and prompted her to use art to create interracial solidarity and conciliation. Her sometimes barbed, often provocative, and always steadfast story is now told.

Neil Aitken is a writer, editor and translator,, and author of Babbage’s Dream and The Lost Country of Sight, which won the Philip Levine Prize. He is founding editor of Boxcar Poetry Review, received his PhD from USC, and now lives in Canada, where he is a creative writing coach and manuscript consultant.
Lois P. Jones hosted Poets’ Café for many years on KPFK FM Radio, and her first collection, Night Ladder, was short-listed for the Lascaux Poetry Book Award. Her work has been anthologized, including in Wide Awake Poets Of Los Angeles and Beyond, and she co-hosts the Moonday Poetry Series at Flintridge Bookstore.
Eric Moraga now serves as editor of Moon tide Press, and his poetry appears in numerous journals and anthologies. He’s published the collections What We Ache For: Poems and Prose and Here for the Fiction, and the chapbooks First Kill and Secret Origin.
Lynne Thompson was appointed Los Angeles Poet Laureate this year, and she is the author of the poetry collections: Beg No Pardon, Start with a Small Guitar, and Fretwork. She serves on the boards of Cave Canem and LARB, and is Chair of the Board of Trustees, Scripps College.
