L.A. River Public Art Project Kicks off 2nd Annual Lewis MacAdams Prize

Juried public art competition honoring FoLAR Co-Founder call for submissions, now open

Los Angeles–In honor of Lewis MacAdams (1944-2020), co-founder of Friends of the Los Angeles River, the L.A. River Public Art Project (LARPAP) launch[ed] the 2nd annual Lewis MacAdams Prize on April 27th. The competition is a forum for artists to present work that imagines the Los Angeles River as a transformed space for public art that addresses place, community and creativity.

For 2021, the theme of the open call is “Represent the River: Word & Image.” Artists at all career stages are invited to submit a proposal in the visual, literary or time-based arts.

Any site along the fifty-one mile length of the river may be considered. Because this is an ideas competition, money or permits should not be considered barriers to the proposal. Works can be presented in any media, including pdf, jpeg, mov, or personal link, not exceeding 10MB. A descriptoon of the project (250-word maximum) should be included. Complete guidelines [have been] published on the LARPAP website.

The first prize is a $500 award and a special prize of $150 will be awarded to an emerging artist (18-years-old and younger). Three honorable mentions will he recognized, and all proposals will be piblically presented. All submizzions will be judged by a panel of well-established artists, art administrators and art-related community leaders, to be announced soon.
