Speaker Series: Meet Lynne Thompson, New Poet Laureate of Los Angelesvia The Ebell – Online Event
Lynne Thompson, since being appointed our new Poet Laureate in 2021 by Mayor Eric Garcetti, will share her path to this two year appointment, and discuss her writing and literary works.
Thompson is the author of three books of poetry: Start with a Small Guitar, Beg No Pardon, and Fretwork. She serves on the boards of Cave Canem and the Los Angeles Review of Books, and is chair of the Scripps College Board of Trustees. She has received numerous awards, and other recent work is forthcoming in New York Quarterly, New England Review, the 202 Best American Poetry, among others.

Inspired by an unsolved true-crime kidnapping case, Lady Joker has become a cultural touchstone since its 1997 publication.

The free Monday Night Fiction Workshop led by Raquel Baker is a community writing workshop in which participants are asked to bring copies of 2-3 pages of fiction to read, and for critique and discussion. Registration is required.
Raquel Baker earned a PhD in English Literary Studies from the University of Iowa and an MFA in Creative Writing form Mills College. She is currently Assistant Professor of Postcolonial Studies and Transnational Literatures at CSU Channel Islands. She also has published poetry and non-fiction, and done readings with the Ventura Poetry Project.

Obit has won both the National Book Award and the LA Times Book Prize in Poetry. She directs the MFA program at Antioch University, Los Angeles.
Affa M. Weaver is a poet, short story writer, editor, and director of the Writing Intensive at The Frost Place. He is the author of numerous poetry collections, received a NEA fellowship in poetry, and has won many awards for his work.

Virtual Book Fair: Welcome to Lovecraft Country via Rare Book Los Angeles – Online Event
Welcome to Lovecraft Country. Author Matt Ruff will speak about writing his book Lovecraft Country, and the experience of having it adapted by HBO.
Matt Ruff is the award-winning author of seven novels, and his 2016 novel, Lovecraft Country was adapted by Jordan Peele, Misha Green and JJ Abrams as an HBO series. His book explores the conjunction between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and racism in the U.S. during the era of Jim Crow laws.
This event is part of the Western States Virtual Book Fair and Rare Books LA events, which features more than 100 exhibitors of antiquarian books, fine prints, photography, maps, and ephemera.

Emerging Writers Fellowship via Get Lit – Online Teen Event
Get Lit’s FREE 15-week Emerging Writers Fellowship is an online publishing course held for teens on Saturdays from 1-3pm PST.
The course is designated for youth (ages 13-19) who are interested in creating their own poetry chapbooks, as well as learning more about submission and media marketing. No previous experience necessary! Priority to LA youth but all are welcome.
