Becoming Los Angeles is a new collection by the author of the acclaimed memoir, Holy Land, and blends history, memory, and critical analysis to illuminate how Los Angelenos have seen themselves and their city. The author’s particular concern is commonplace Los Angeles, whose rhythms of daily life are set against the gaudy backdrop of historical myth and Hollywood illusion. He maps the contours of the city and explores what the Angeleno identity has come to mean, drawing on a decade of writing about the city’s history and its aspirations. It is ultimately a book about learning how to fall in love with wherever it is you are.

Bel Canto Bookstore will host the Burning Issues Book Club online to discuss the book This Changes Everything, by Naomi Klein.

In the August meeting of Burning Issues Book Club, held every fourth Sunday of the month, author Naomi Klein argues that climate change isn’t just another issue, but an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways. She builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies.
