An open letter to the white members of Writers Blok:

Dear Writers Blok Community,

If we’ve learned anything from Black Lives Matter, it’s this: Nothing will change unless we call out and challenge the abuse of power.

I was the first woman of color to be kicked out of Writers Blok, but not the last. My crime? Calling out a sexist joke on Instagram.

Maybe you already know my story. Maybe you know that my friend got kicked out too. Her crime? Trying to stick up for me.

Maybe you know how the rest of the story unfolded, how Paul Shirley refused to apologize, how he accused me and my friend of doxing him (we did not dox him), how multiple members at Writers Blok tried to get him to apologize and relent.

He refused.

But there’s something else you should know: This is not Paul Shirley’s first rodeo. As one sports writer put it, Paul Shirley has been down this road before.
