John Tateishi & Redress at Diesel Bookstore

Welcome author John Tateishi, in conversation with Heyday executive director Steve Wasserman, to discuss and sign his book, Redress: The Inside Story of the Successful Campaign for Japanese America Reparations.

This is the unlikely but true story of the Japanese American Citizens League’s fight for an official government apology for the imprisonment of more than 100,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. The author was leader of the JACL Redress Committee for many years, and admits the task was herculean in scale. it was unprecedented, required mass education of events, backroom politicking and verbal fisticuffs. It’s a story of a community reckoning with what it means to be both culturally Japanese and American citizens, how to restore their honor, and what duty it has to protect such harms for happening again.

Cathy Park Hong & Minor Feelings at Book Soup

Author Cathy Park Hong, in conversation with author Maggie Nelson, will present and sign her book Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning..

Poet and essayist Cathy Park Hong fearlessly and provocatively blends memoir, cultural criticism, and history to expose fresh truths about racialized consciousness in America. Blending these essays together is the author’s theory of “minor feelings” which occur when American optimism contradicts your own reality—when you believe the lies you’re told about your own racial identity. Minor feelings are not small, they are dissonant—and in their tension she finds the key to the questions that haunt her.

Benjamin E. Park & Kingdom of Nauvoo at Vroman’s Bookstore

Author Benjamin E. Park will discuss and sign Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier.

The author excavated the brief, tragic life of a lost Mormon city, and recreates the Mormons’ 1839 flight from Missouri to Illinois. There, under the charismatic leadership of Joseph Smith, they founded Nauvoo, which shimmered briefly.  But Smith’s challenge to democratic traditions, as well as his new doctrine of polygamy, would bring about its fall. Far from being outsiders, the Mormons were representative of their era in their distrust of democracy and their attempt to forge a sovereign society of their own.
