Anansi Writers Workshop & Ashay Matthews at the World Stage
The Anansi Writers Workshop was founded in 1990 by Kamau Daáood, Akilah Oliver, Nafis Nabawi and Anthony Lyons. In 1993, Michael Datcher initiated the development of a three-part format for the workshop. Their tradition of a community workshop began in the late 1960s at the Watts Writers’ Workshop, where World Stage co-founder Kamau Daáood started his writing career. The Anansi Writers Workshop is coordinated by V. Kali and Conney Williams.
Tonight’s featured artist:
Ashay Matthews will present her first book release event for her new book, Ashay Speaks: Poems by Ashay. The book Out of Obscurity: Black Survivors of the Holocaust, by Ashay Mathieu, is a unique and fascinating poetic discourse about black victims of Hitler. Mathieu uses her literary skills to produce Ekphrastic poetry based on the visual art work of black Holocaust victim Josef Nassy and the holocaust novel The Lamp Shade, along with poetry that comments on the plight of another black Holocaust victim, Valaida Snow, and Holocaust lecture victim Elizabeth Mann. Her words sing praises and rattle the conscience.
