Conchas y Café: Bilingual Community Writing Workshops at Vernon – Leon H. Washington Jr. Memorial Branch Library, LAPL

Our weekly Conchas y Café Zine – Bilingual Community Writing Workshops are free and open to adults.  This program offered by DSTL Arts, provides a 12-week creative writing workshop for adults of all ages. Participants learn more about creative writing, poetry, publishing, zine-making, and more, while receiving writing exercises and feedback on their work. Participants also have the opportunity to publish and  present their work in a zine of writing produced through the program. A public reading and release party celebrates the culmination of each 12-week series.

Louie Kemp & Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventure at Book Soup

Author Louie Kemp will present and sign his book, Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventure.

The author first met Bobby Zimmerman from Hibbing at summer camp in northern Wisconsin in 1953, when he was age twelve and had a guitar. Kemp, at age eleven, believed Bobby’s pronouncements that he was going to be a rock-and-roll star. So begins this honest, funny, and deeply affectionate memoir of a friendship spanning five decades of wild adventures, searching conversation, musical milestones, nad enduring comradery. As their lives diverged, their friendship held fast, and they have always been there for each other.

Judy Glickman Lauder & Beyond the Shadows at the Museum of the Holocaust

Museum of the Holocaust presents Judy Glickman Launder, author of the book, Beyond  the Shadows: The Holocaust and the Danish Exception.

Internationally acclaimed photographer Judy Glickman Lauder will present and sign her book, Beyond the Shadows: The Holocaust and the Danish Exception, which tells the story of Danish citizens’ rescue of large numbers of Jews residing in Denmark who were otherwise bound for transport to concentration camps. She has spent much of her life behind the lens of her father’s camera and will discuss her experiences photographing Holocaust sites since the 1980s. She began exhibiting her work in the 1970s and her photos have been incorporated into over 300 collections nationally and internationally.

Anansi Writers Workshop at the World Stage

The Anansi Writers Workshop was founded in 1990 by Kamau Daáood, Akilah Oliver, Nafis Nabawi and Anthony Lyons. In 1993, Michael Datcher initiated the development of a three-part format for the workshop. Their tradition of a community workshop began in the late 1960s at the Watts Writers’ Workshop, where World Stage co-founder Kamau Daáood started his writing career. The Anansi Writers Workshop is coordinated by V. Kali and Conney Williams.

Tonight’s featured artist:

Radomir Vojtech Luza is the Poet Laureate of North Hollywood, a Pushcart Prize nominee, and author of 30 books (28 poetry collections), most recently Sidewalks and Street Corners, published by Christian Faith Publishing, and a 400-page magnum opus, Eros of Angels (2016).

Luza is also co-organizer of UNBUCKLED: NoHo Poetry in North Hollywood, CA.

The Logic of Poetry and Dreams – Sholeh Wolpe at The Broad Museum

For millennia, poetry and literature have been at the heart of Persian culture and identity, forming the foundation for much of Shirin Neshat’s practice.  In conjunction with the current exhibit, Sholeh Wolpe explores love, loss of love, beauty and war in her work and in translations  of other  iconic Iranian works. Platica: A History of Spanish in the United States at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes

Platica presents Rosina Lozano, PhD,  Associate Professor of History at Princeton University, and her recent book,  An American Language: The History of Spanish in the United States.

The nation has always been multi-lingual, and Spanish language rights, in particular, have remained an important political issue in to the present. After the US-Mexican War, Spanish became a language of politics, and its speakers clashed over where its speakers and  its opponents used it and what its presence meant and whether to allow its continuation..
