Open Door Poetry Reading at Battery Books
The Open Door Poetry Reading welcomes three poets and writers to read and discuss their work:
Carla Sameth is a writer living in Pasadena. Her book One Day on the Gold Line was published in 2019, and her work has appeared in many journals. She was selected to be a 2019 Pride Poet with the City of West Hollywood, and was a fall 2016 PEN in the Community Teaching Artist, and has taught creative writing through WriteGirl. She now teaches at CSULA and with Southern New Hampshire University.
Vanessa McGrady is a former newspaper and radio journalist, waitress, playwright, etc, etc, and writes about personal finance, feminist parenting, and health. Her work has appearedi n the New York Times, Oprah.com, Jezebel, Forbes, and elsewhere.
Gerda Govine Ituarte, Ed.D. is the author of four poetry collections, and her sixth book is a work-in-progress scheduled to launch in 2020. She established the Pasadena Rose Poets collaboration in 2016, and instituted poetry readings by PRP at Pasadena City Council Meetings. Her work has appeared in many museum/gallery exhibits, and she is former co-founder and co-director with her husband of La Casa del Tunal: art Center in La Colonia Federal, Tijuana.

Queer writers have been writing with their instincts to emote and recreate/react to memories, and have been working through cognitive poetics to understand choices and regrets. There may never be a solution or healing, but there should be artistic and personal engagement with issues in the form of writing—the ability to keep moving forward through deep reflection, keen chronicling, and self-inquiry. This deep reflection and cognitive writing is an extension and digression form Lorca’s deep song, Rothenberg’s deep image, and David Antin’s Talk Poetry, but puts us closer to the truth and myth of Robert Duncan and HD in very personal and political ways.

Tisha Marie Reichle-Aguilera is a Chicana Feminist and former Rodeo Queen. She completed her teaching credential at CSUDH and earned her MFA from Antioch University
Laura Roque is the daughter of Cuban political exiles, was raised and received her BA and MFA degrees in Florida, and has won numerous awards for her fiction.
Vanessa Angelica Villarreal is the author of Beast Meridian (2017) , has won numerous awards for her work, and is raising her son with the help of a loyal dog.

Natalie Peterkin is a poet and professor of English at local community colleges, and her poems often focus on love, lust, and loss.
Francesca Terzano grew up in the Inland Empire, and her first chapbook, Fruit of the Dead, is about Persephone and Hades with a feminist twist. She runs literary alchemy press, and teaches English at Mt. SAC.

Edwina Romero & Prairie Madness at Gatsby’s Bookstore

This story takes place in April 1881, Fort Union, in New Mexico Territory. In a draught-filled spring there’s talk of Prairie Madness, a condition leading to depression and violence. When the body of a Sergeant is found brutally murdered, the evidence lead sto more murders, fraud, and conspiracy. This book is based on historical events.

Another busy week in L.A. Literature. This past Saturday was the kick off of the 3rd Annual Lambda LitFest and it continues at various locations throughout Los Ángeles all week. It’s a celebration of LGBTQ writers and their writing. Venues include Book Soup, Women’s Center For Creative Work, Book Show, Armory Center for the Arts, Chinese American Museum, and more. However, for those not interested in Lambda LitFest, there are still readings and workshops and open mics around the city. There are readings at Book Soup in West Hollywood, Gatsby’s Books in Long Beach, Pages in Manhattan Beach, Diesel Books in Santa Monica, Tía Chucha’s in Sylmar, among others. Open mics such as Da Poetry Lounge, Redondo Poets, Poetry y Pan in Pomona, The Definitive Soapbox 10th anniversary celebration in Long Beach, among others. Local writers that are reading around town this week include: Vickie Vertiz, Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, Irene Suico Soriano, Lucia Galloway, BA Williams and Myriam Gurba, among others.
