Chris Rush & The Light Years at Skylight Bookstore

Author Chris Rush will present and discuss his debut memoir, The Light Years.

The author was born into a prosperous, fiercely Roman Catholic, New Jersey family, one that was destined to fracture. His older sister Donna introduces him to the charismatic Valentine, who places a tab of acid on twelve-year-old Rush’s tongue, proclaiming: “This is a sacrament. You are now one of us.” this book is a prayer for vanished friends, an odyssey signposted with broken and extraordinary people. It transcends one boy’s story to illustrate the slow slide from optimism of the 1960s into the darker and more sinister 1970s. This is a journey of reconciliation, as Rush faces his lost childhood and, finally, himself.

In the lawless, drought-ridden lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893, two extraordinary lives collide. Nora is an unflinching frontierswoman awaiting the return of the men in her life—her husband and her eldest sons. She is biding her time with her youngest son, who is convinced a mysterious beast is stalking the land around their home. Lurie is a former outlaw and a man haunted by ghosts, and has undertaken a momentous expedition across the West. The ways Nora’s and Lurie’s stories intertwine is the surprise and suspense of this brilliant novel.
